However, I knew I needed something more to improve my skills. The in person classes taught me how to create lesson plans that were interesting and engaging. Word games, pictures, and roleplaying, in addition to structure, made learning a joy for students and teacher. Also, being certified as an ESL teacher opened the door for employment to nonprofits including TLC. I'm grateful for the numerous students from all over the globe they have brought to me. Bridges is a community center/ non-profit org for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing that also provides invaluable services including professional interpreting services (if you watch the news, you have likely seen Eric or Amy interpreting the Covid briefings), classes and resources for hearing parents of d/Deaf children, and classes/training for hearing people in the public sector (like me) who frequently come in to contact with d/Deaf clientele, patients, and customers. I have now taken ASL classes around the city and Bridges offered the best deal for classes and the opportunity to learn from Deaf teachers. Mike also patiently answered my questions and guided me to some great resources. I can't recommend Bridges enough!
