We were a bit surprised at the number of menus (3-4 on the table) and had plenty of food options to choose from! I ended up ordering the Italian currywurst, mostly out of curiosity, and thoroughly enjoyed the twist on a classic German dish. As I don't particularly enjoy beer, I decided to try a fruit beer, which was much more to my taste. The only downside to my experience was the smokers sitting upwind of us, but I suppose that's inevitable in Europe.

We arrived right before they opened to ask whether we could make a reservation for later in the afternoon. We didn't even get to ask about the reservation--first thing we were told was that they are not open yet (no "hello", nothing). I responded, "yes, we know--we wanted to make a reservation for later if possible." Then we were told, "well, if you come later and all seats are taken, then you have bad luck." Ok, so am I to take away from this statement that they don't take reservations? If so, just say so... We returned half an hour later--of course, there were plenty of seats. We picked a table (as is customary in Germany) but my husband hadn't even sat down when the waiter walked over--again without saying hello--to yell at him that he "take his water bottle off the table". Again, we hadn't even taken a seat yet, and it's normal to carry a water bottle on a warm day. At this point, we didn't feel very welcome and just left to take our business somewhere else. I will also say that this was not a language problem. I am German, and this entire interaction with the waiter happened in German language.

Cafe Chagall is totally magic...it feels like it's been there offering great food and great service since before the war, although I'm betting it wasn't Russian food before the war. They had salads as well as traditional German food but nothing overly heavy. There was a full case of wonderful desserts as well. Seating was available inside and out. The garden was beautiful as was the shop with a great selection of wine available to take. It was different than most German restaurants we had been to (except for Factory Girl in Berlin) and a pleasure to mix healthy with heavy.

The…read moreHotel Melia is a nice place to stay in Berlin, but it seemed like more people liked to come to the tapas bar instead. After walking the streets of Berlin at night for the excitement, we found it back at our hotel. This place was lively with locals and tourists alike. The workers were helpful and the food/drink was fine. This place is a good place to come for a light meal or drinks in Berlin and a great place for them if you are actually staying in the hotel.
