Decent sized centre..recently extended and now contains some more popular/recognised high street names, like Woolworths, New Look and O2

For me, Ards Shopping Centre isn't the kind of shopping centre you go to for a premium shopping…read moreexperience - it's more of a Bon Marche and Claire's Accessories kind of place. There are a couple of redeeming shops - River Island and McGees Butchers are worth a visit as is Belleek Living which is upmarket and a little out of place. Looks like it's showing off a bit with its luxury ceramics. I am also a bit of a Primark bargain hunter and while the branch in Ards is small, it seems to have some of the better bits you find in the bigger stores, particularly PJs. For a Primark raid, park behind the centre rather than in the car park and nip in the back door. If you do, you'll pass a line of cafes which are dated and forlorn but seem to do good business nonetheless. There are a couple of nicer places to grab a sandwich like Esquires coffee shop and the juice bar next door. There is a really big branch of Asda which does a good range of ladies and kids clothes and I've picked up a couple of good bits and piece for the kids there. All in all, Ards is somewhere for a functional shopping trip rather than a leisurely browse. You'll get your groceries and maybe pick up something in River Island or Primark. Or a fancy ceramic vase in Belleek Living.

About time I updated my review for Ards Shopping Centre from 2010 - so, what's changed? Much like…read moreother shopping centre's this one has a whole load of vacant/closed shops which is always sad to see. But let's focus on the positives. Ards has a good amount of big brand stores - River Island, Asda, Primark and a Boots store. One class addition to this centre is a soft, FREE children's play area - a perfect place to leave the kids or appease them after shopping. One thing Ards has abundance is parking - you won't struggle to find a space. There's also a Burger King and a Movieland cinema on the grounds so if you want to make a day of it you can. I'm taking a star off Ards for the amount of empty stores - perhaps give the empty units to independent retailers - it would definitely take the bad look off the place.

The centre has some local flavour with some small independents trading like Mc Gettigan's bakery, Cafe Trax and the Oasis bar. It also has Tesco Costa and the usual suspects. I shot a brief video as I walked through and it was Jim Revees - one of my mum's favourite singers (she disliked old blue eyes intensely) and my friend Dee commented on how loud the music was. Yes Dee we are a singing nation and many folks were walking along singing along with Jim. Our wee nation has just spent thirty million euro on Garth Brooks concerts - 5 only in Dublin Summer 22 and we'll sing as much to him as he will to us. If this was transcribed to USA Garth would turn billions of dollars. I guess it pays to have friends in low places after all. Go Garth.

She promptly talked to security and instructed them to watch us even at the cash register. We were rather confused and soon came to the conclusion she believed we were stealing, when that simply wasn't the case. It was a very disrespectful and unsettling experience as she and the security followed us around the shop blatantly until we left through the machines at the exit. They expected the alarm to sound as we walked through but that did not occur because we simply did not steal or do anything that she claimed we did. In the very least it was satisfying when they had to stare at us as we walked out proving we didn't commit any robbery. I implore staff to think twice before following a group of young teenage girls that only wanted to go on a nice day out shopping and enjoying themselves.

About 12 years ago, Antrim's town planners stumbled across an empty space on the outskirts of town…read moreand thought "Hey! This is the perfect spot for a cheap and nasty retail park! Let's build it here, next to the derelict Kerr's Tyres building to improve the area!" The end result created Junction One, a retail park with outlet stores. So think Next Clearance, M&S Outlet (2 levels), Nike Factory Store, Adidas, Antler and Toytown. All of those are located here. The layout is a bit weird, as it is two triangles of shops back to back which is a bit inconvenient if you are trying to find a shop only to find that it is on the other side of the triangle. In a way, it reminds me of Glasgow Fort but on a much smaller scale and with shops that are dire. Don't get me wrong, I do love a bargain but with the amount of empty units and the fashion actually in the outlet stores, it does feel slightly limited. It does have its positives like a Starbucks, a big Asda and a cinema with an "IMAX" screen. (Screen 1 of the Omniplex is 23m wide and is the largest cinema screen in Ireland.) I do miss the café that was in M&S, and there was a decent little ice cream parlour at the back but both have sadly gone to make way for more emptiness. The former M&S Café is now the extended lingerie department. But M&S here doesn't even have a food hall so what is the point of calling it M&S! But Starbucks, Asda and the cinema do keep me coming back when I'm over in Antrim and Redz, Moe's Grill and the Antrim Park at the edge of the place are also pretty good.

It is a labyrinth with stairs up and down leading to small interconnected rooms full of delights. They serve good food and wonderful coffee. Now I usually dislike shopping (outside food and drink) but when I'm in a place as wonderful as this it's a different story. It's one of the few places that sells Chanel No 5 perfume - Chanel are careful as to who can trade their merchandise - 100ml £100. It had the remnants of a Black eye Friday sale that included men's shoes. I am fussy about shoes. I like proper soft leather, the touch and the smell - including leather on the soles and heels. Shoes that are strong and clench your feet - shoes that demand enthusiastic brushing and polish or as I was growing up spit and polish. Proper nails in the heels and great stitching are vital too. If it's made in China footwear or India it's not going on my feet. Period. I found a pair that were perfect. Fitted like they were especially made just for me. £200 down to £75 and wonderful and now mine. They will mould to the shape of my feet over time and will be so much better when they do. Old shoes are like old friends - comfortable to be with. These places are from another time and we must support them for as long as we can as to lose them means it feels like we lose a piece of ourselves.
