This is a great Vietnamese cafe. The setting is very fresh and open, but nothing too fancy. We went there on a summer afternoon during a lunch rush. We had a beef bah mi and a vermicelli prawn bowl. The bah mi was really good, on a thin french baguette the meat was really tender and juicy. Definitely a great bah mi. The vermicelli bowl was good as well, although the noodle were not thin vermicelli noodles. Were here thicker, which is no biggie but don't be fooled by the name. The prawns were cooked perfectly, nice and juicy with lots of flavor. Whangarei has some great restaurants and Mean's Cafe is a great addition.

Stunning food. Great choice for fresh food made well. Super Yum Low key vibe. But don't be fooled. I'm here by myself so only tried the spicy beef salad. Thoroughly recommend it read more

Excellent pho and spring rolls. Spicy beef pho is nice and spicy!!! Great service, donuts at the counter are an awesome treat too!

Food is ok but service is awful. Staff spill soup on customer's dress with no regret. Really bad attitude. The WORST dining experience ever. read more

The best place to eat in whangarei hands down. Tasty food at good prices. My go to is the beef fried rice and boy it is good.

Bad service of the girl with yellow hair end. As a foreigner traveling around NZ, it is the first time in NZ receiving such a different treatment from kiwi. The waitress explains carefully to kiwi and not a smile to us. Then the waitress even dropped oil on my trousers and just left me some red tissues. And these tissues made my trousers worse by making it red. Time to revisit the service. read more

So yum. Great for lunch or dinner. Everything is fresh and feels healthy. I have tried nearly all of the menu options and they are all delicious- my fave is the banh mi, but the pho is really good too. Just yum. read more

I always seek to try different things on this menu but somehow always seem to go back to my 'standard' of pho & rice rolls. Never disappointed however & sometimes just have cravings for this place if I'm feeling like a fire-y chilli soup hit & it always hits the spot & I come out feeling like I can take on the world!! My favourite mid priced restaurant in Whangarei with chicken and lemongrass vermicelli dish my absolute fav anytime anywhere. Fresh, fast and delicious food. Always busy cause it's so great. Takeaways also popular. read more

It was very busy with the 3 places in one so there was little seating space, so we just ordered take out. They quoted a 20 minute wait so we went across the street to order a drink but it was ready in much less time than quoted (approx 10 min). My partner ordered fish and chips and I got the lemongrass chili chicken on vermicelli. My partner thought the fish and chips wasn't bad and I enjoyed the flavor of the fish sauce on the vermicelli but the chicken was a little dry.

Vegetarian, prawn, and pork/ prawn rice rolls are made freshly in the morning down the road from the market, and are sold with either oyster or fish sauce. The herbs in the rolls especially make these a taste of Vietnam, as they are Vietnamese herbs grown by the friendly business owners themselves as they are very difficult to find usually in New Zealand. Pork steamed buns are also available, and all the meat used in the fare is free farmed or free range.
