I went to Medusa on a whim when, on a long holiday, I decided I was sick to death of my hair and didn't want the Facebook pics of my trip to feature me with a dull 'do. I booked an appointment with Katy and DEAR GOD it PAINS me that I live an ocean away because otherwise I would be obsessed for life. I had no idea what I wanted beyond knowing that I didn't like what I had. Katy knew exactly what to do based on a few shoddily strung together adjectives - she gave me the most lovely colour job of my life, and the cut is perfect. Nearly six weeks later, it's still looking pretty great because she was so meticulous and seemed to know precisely what my hair needed and how it would fall. Worth the price all the way. Popped back in later that day for a shellac manicure which was also very well done, and I left absolutely pleased. Go let the ladies at Medusa work their magic on your hair. Medusa is a fantastic local hairdressing salon, with two stores in the centre of Edinburgh. The Teviot salon is right next to George Square and so it is in the ideal location to catch all the University students walking by. I have been to this salon several times to get my hair cut and each time I leave feeling completely fabulous! From the moment you walk into the salon you feel like a valued customer as all the staff are incredibly friendly. Each time I have been it has always been very busy, although I have always managed to get an appointment at the last minute which is a bonus. Getting my hair washed at Medusa is definitely my favourite aspect of the hairdressing experience. They lather your hair in the most delicious smelling shampoo and massage your head for a wee while which is so relaxing! My hairdresser was very friendly and understood exactly what it was I was after. The prices start at £32 for a ladies hair cut and blow dry which I first thought was a little bit expensive but having been and experienced the service, I found that it was very worth it. They do offer student discounts which start at 10%. Medusa also has a beauty salon in its hairdressing store and offers manicures and pedicures. read more

Medusa is a great local hairdressing chain - there are two salons in Edinburgh's city centre and a third in Musselburgh. In addition to hairdressing, the salons also do nails and have beauty services. The Teviot salon has a vibrant atmosphere and seems to buzz like a hive of activity; when I visited (on a Thursday evening) each one of the seven or so hairdressing stations had a client at it. This is obviously a popular place, however I managed to get an appointment at relatively short notice (big thumbs up for this). The stylist gave me a thorough consultation and I felt like she really listened to me and understood what I wanted in terms of cut and style, her friendly and chatty manner put me instantly at ease. Once I'd been shampooed and sat in front of the mirror, I was almost immediately offered a tea or coffee (again, big thumbs up), and the coffee was real (i.e. not Nescafe instant rubbish) and came with a biscuit. I left the salon feeling great; I'd been looked after really well and given a fantastic haircut I really can't fault this place: it is trendy and modern, while also managing to be friendly and professional. read more

I am so angry about my horrible experience at Medusa today. My previous visit was amazing--5/5. However, my Go-To is out of town and I landed an appointment with Stephanie. I went in with a picture of roughly what I want and came out looking absolutely nothing like it. My hair is a horrible ashy blonde, not anywhere close to the platinum blonde I requested. She would not do any of the POP of colour I wanted. And even after specifically telling her I do NOT like blunt cuts, my hair has lots of straight edges. She did not listen to a single thing I wanted. And when I told her I was unhappy with the colour, she basically told me that I'm wrong and I have to do it this way. No, no I don't. If I can go from Little Mermaid red to golden blonde in one sitting that left my hair fine, I should be able to go from golden blonde to a shade of platinum blonde in one sitting. Thanks for ruining my New Year's with one of the worst hair jobs I've ever had. read more

Usually I spend around £8 in a barber shop but I thought I'd treat myself to a 'fancy haircut' with a senior stylist for nearly £40. This act of follicle fancifulness didnt pay off. First of all, the girl who prepped me was very friendly and easy to chat to then I had something called a 'consulting stage'. What I did was show the stylist a couple of photos I brought in but she merely glanced at them and never looked at them again. It would be unfair to criticise anything other than the final product but the stylist didnt really pay attention to what I said or the pictures I brought in and I was last to be done so she was probably wanting to get it over with and go out for a drink on a Friday night. For the money I spent, the haircut was substandard, I have actually had better cuts for about £6 so lesson learned, stick to a barber! read more

I came here for a cut and blow-dry and used a snap-fax for a 40% discount. The discounted price came out to around £30 or so. The good news is I really like my haircut! My stylist gave me a good consultation and made sure I was happy with the end result. The 40% snapfax discount is good anytime for first time customers and only on Fridays thereafter. Unfortunately, I don't think I would have ever paid full price (£51 for a cut from a 'director') for the same experience. The salon could have been better looked after. There was quite a bit of unsightly hair and dust all around the edges of the rooms. I think I also spotted a dog running around at some point. The hair washing basins were more uncomfortable than usual and I left with little bits of hair covering the back of my jumper. I'm happy with my cut, but Medusa will have to step it up a notch if they want to justify their prices. I'll probably go back, but I'll only be making Friday appointments. read more

I came into the Medusa salon on Teviot to have a bleach, toner and cut for my hair which had been highlighted and then dyed with 3 different non-permanent colours previously. Hair stylists Dion and Fraser refused to colour my hair because the bleach would come out patchy and because of the texture of my hair (very fine) there was a risk of it becoming damaged. This was all fair enough, however their rude attitude towards the 'problem' of my hair was insensitive, insulting and left me in tears. Both of them picked at my hair and made nasty, scathing faces in the mirror about it which I could see them doing and was hurt by. They also made numerous mean remarks on the fine texture of my hair, which is something I am already self conscious about and the two of them made me feel much worse about it. I have lived with my specific hair type for the past 20 years so (believe it or not) I am well aware that my hair is thin, however this didn't seem to stop them from informing me of this as though I hadn't yet noticed. As someone who suffers with body dysmorphia I find it incredibly difficult to get my hair cut at a salon because being in front of mirrors causes me immense anxiety, hence the obvious state of neglect my hair was in (I have cut my own hair for the past two times it needed cutting). Today I was looking for a professional to reassure and help me feel good about my hair again with a friendly, understanding and supportive attitude, but I got the opposite from Dion and especially Fraser. I'm very glad I declined to go along with any hair treatment by them by leaving before they could upset me more. read more

I've had my haircut twice before today in Medusa at Teviot, ages ago, with Marnie (who has since moved to Clerk St.) and she cut my hair really nicely, but I just can't afford her, so I went to Jaydene today, who was the cheapest on the price scale. I have always been very easy going and let hairdressers do what they like, without giving them much, as I like to have something that suits me, and not something that looks good in a magazine on someone else stuck in my hair, which generally doesn't look great, I just say what I like and don't like, and let them get on with it. Today I went in, and said I'd been growing it for quite a while, but it needed tidied up, I liked that I was able to tie it up again, and pin it back. I also told her that I can be lazy with my hair and just blow dry it straight, as that's the easiest thing, but I like that it's a bit wavy and it can flick in different ways with layers. I said that she could do what she liked. I was asked if I wanted layers, and I said she should do what she liked. To clarify, I meant what would suit me... maybe I should have said that. When she cut the ends off, she dried it, and once she had, she said that she was going to cut into the layers, but it was sitting nicely, so she wouldn't. I stupidly agreed. So for £38, I got a trim, basically, I reckon I could have got my boyfriend to do it for free. I also didn't get a head massage, which I did get before, and I didn't get any gentle treatment when she was brushing the tats out. It was tuggy and painful. It looked lovely when she had professionally dried it, and it looked lovely as I was going round town, and when I got home, but I've brushed the hairspray out and now it looks crap. It's got no shape, and I hate it. I know it was my mistake that I said do what you want, and I didn't say yes I wanted layers, because I figured if she had a better idea of what would suit me, she could do that, I didn't imagine what she wanted was a longer break and not to bother putting any care into me at all. Admittedly when I was leaving she noticed it was my birthday so I got a happy birthday and some free product. I probably would have rather had a discount off the haircut, especially as I tend to just use lush on my hair, as it doesn't weigh it down like a lot of professional products do. I would say Jaydene is probably alright if you tell her exactly what you want, but it seems she needs more direction than I like to give. read more

I came in with a platinum snap fax, and got 50% off as a first time customer, so chose the senior director, Jill. The haircut was about £25, but I paid £4.50 extra for a conditioning treatment, followed by a long and relaxing head massage. Upon entering, I was at once excited as I saw the elegant furnishings, high ceilings, and plenty of beautiful women having their locks tidied up. This is exactly what I wanted, being in between two essays and an exam. I wanted a bit of time to relax, stop thinking, and practice self indulgence... Jill took me first to a seat in front of the mirror for a consultation. This was a nice change from the norm, as she really listened to what I was saying and provided her own advice. When I said I wanted volume and layers, she suggested a slight variation, without being dogmatic, just offering a professional and very welcome alternative. She also suggested providing a bit of shape at the front (though I clearly asked for no fringe). Another hairdresser then took me over to the basin to get my hair washed. She checked whether the temperature was okay. The conditioning treatment stayed in for about 10 minutes, and during this time I got a really relaxing head massage. At the end of this treatment, I was offered a tea or coffee, and opted for the latter. A cappuccino came with a little biscuit, which I couldn't eat, but was nonetheless a nice gesture. I then resumed my seat over by the mirror, and Jill came back to brush, blow dry and start snipping away. After the blow drying treatment and the application of some root canal spray, my hair really came alive, quite different from the dry brittle hair with which I entered. I got a simple cut, nothing too extreme, but it was done very well. I left feeling as though my hair was much healthier. True, it did become flat when I next washed it, but the cut is very good and I no longer feel like I have untamed straggly thin hair. I will be back. read more

I decided that chopping off 14in wasn't enough, so I decided to go platinum. Always been a dark haired girl, loved it, but having this short pixie has led me down some interesting paths and blonde was what I was confronting. So back to Peter, and several others came and advised so it was a whole salon effort. I was there for three hours, but wow! I am a bit honey-platinum, and I have to go back for a second whitening, but that's the usual way when you switch allegiances: it takes some effort. Taking full advantage of their 40% off discount on Friday's for Snapfax owners, I can honestly say that both times and with different stylists I have finally found a hair salon in Edinburgh I like, and that has consistently given me a decent hair cut (ie I don't feel like hiding under a hat for a few weeks). It only took me 3.5 years but lo and behold I recommend Medusa to anyone who likes to feel good after going to a salon- the staff are friendly and as mentioned previously you do feel like a valued customer- even if you are going in with a student discount. read more

As someone who is very reluctant to go to the hairdressers - I was delighted with my experience here! I'd always walked past this place and thought it looked lovely and after reading some reviews decided to give it a go. I booked online which is super handy. When I arrived I was greeted with a smile and taken to get started straight away (which was awesome as I was pretty early). It was Stephanie who did my hair and I couldn't recommend her more! I just wanted to kind of neaten up my hair and give it a new lease of life - which is exactly what I got and I love it! I can't remember the last time I came away from the hairdressers so pleased with the outcome. A mention also has to go to the guy who washed my hair - best head massage ever, I was so relaxed I almost went to sleep! I went to the one on nicholson/south clerk street. Its trendy and nice inside, and the staff are very welcoming. My stylist did a good job of root coloring touch ups and my hair turned out a little redder and darker brown than before and i like it even more than before! Went to Medusa, South Clerk Street yesterday (25/9/14) for the first time. I had an appointment with Robbie. He was excellent and chose a fantastic colour for me within minutes of speaking to him. I then went on to have one of the best cuts I have had for a while. I wouldn't normally do this, but I was so unimpressed with my experience here that I feel obliged to warn others before they make the mistake and come to this salon. My hairdresser couldn't be more unhelpful - I tried to talk to her but it was too noisy and she acted as if she didn't want to be there. When I asked for something or for her opinion on what to do as a hairdresser she shrugged and didn't offer any advice or options and I felt like speaking up was an imposition and actually felt quite uncomfortable. She then blow dried my hair in a different way to how I asked but by then I couldn't be bothered even trying to point this out. I have been there Monday, Feb 17th at 11:15am, and I had the worst hair cut ever. It was as if I used sign language to explain to deaf and blind hairdresser what I was looking for. In fact, I showed her pictures of what I was expecting and reassured her all I wanted is a quick trim. When she first cut it, it was clear it was already too late to even attempt any rescue, but I should have at least left, because she has managed to leave it uneven and did not even bother to shave the excess hair in my neck. Painfully I did pay 23 pounds, no tips of course, but she give the look as she was waiting for some tip. I can't believe she so obliviousness of her disaster, but to confirm it, here is my official complain even though I have attempted to deal it afterwards, but I had not yet received any reply whatsoever... neither by phone nor by email. Hairdressers do have serious difficulty to listen.... this is fact. But she was probably living in a parallel world. Of course I won't come back... even if is to show the atrocious result... Between my natural roots and my blond ends there was a light brown transitory section. It could be nicer if there were few slight sun kissed golden blond touches on this light brown. I explained all that I wanted to Fraser first. He told me to book an appointment for highlights, which I did. I also explained all to the girl who was in charge of my hair. She suggested balayage. I said sure. However, she wanted to cut bits and pieces from my hair to see how my light brown lifts up. I did not want her to cut it randomly. I told her I'd rather not risk color before travelling if she wasn't sure. I could also not get anything done that day, it was totally fine. Though she got an idea for natural looking highlights and was sure of achieving what I wanted. The result was a disaster. She confirmed it'd look golden and still she colored ash blond. I wanted slight touches yet she gave me radical full blond. I wanted naturally blended slight golden touches yet I ended up with very contrasted ash stripes all over. It looks like a zebra. I wanted something low maintenance so I wouldn't need to touch up my roots often and can enjoy a regrowth. However she colored very close to the roots without gradient, so I will need to go and color the roots very often. Although I objected previously, she still bleached my ends to show off the product called WellaPlex resulting my ends to be even more damaged than before. Also, because the talking took longer than expected she gave me a half head. She was okay with me getting out with the back of my hair being way different from the front. More importantly, when I showed that the result shocked me they questioned my integrity. They finally decided to pay attention to what I wanted because they are a " reputable " salon. They did not charge me for the bad result but told me they'd charge me for the fixing on another day. Yet my hair is so damaged not only on the ends as it used to be but now also on the roots. Bryony was fantastic - she did such a great job on my hair! My hair was in pretty terrible condition and needed a lot of work. Bryony listened to what I wanted, gave suggestions of how it could work well, showed me examples and was super friendly about it all. It wasn't the cheapest but I got a full cut, colour, treatment and style. Sometimes you've just got to pay that bit extra for greatness! First of all i'd like to start by pointing out that i have never written an online review and never before submitted a complaint regarding any sort of service i've received. I had my hair cut at Medusa about a month ago by Erin and did really like it. Every time i've been there they tell me if i need my fringe trimmed at any point then i should just pop in because they do it for free. Usually I don't have time so I just cut my fringe myself and even if i screw it up a little it still does the job and looks decent. Yesterday I was walking past the salon anyway and my fringe had been annoying me for a while so i decided just to go in and see if anyone would be free to trim it. I had to wait half an hour until someone was free but at the time didn't mind this. I don't know what the girls name was who cut my hair but I WISH I HAD DONE IT MYSELF. I described to her how it had been cut before and the original style was still there anyway, it was just a bit longer. She seemed to understand and then proceeded to cut it. It was quite clear she just couldn't care less what my hair looked like as this was obviously a waste of her time because she wasn't getting paid. She took probably a total of 30s to snip away and the result is horrendous. IT HONESTLY LOOKS LIKE A THREE YEAR OLD HAS CUT MY HAIR, although maybe a three year old woud do a better job. One side vaguely resembles what I had asked for, gradually gets longer down the sides, and the other is about 3 cm higher and blunt. I look absolutely ridiculous and there is nothing i can do to fix it because it's far too short already. I'm so angry that this is the attitude of the staff in the salon, or at least it is of this one girl, that I am never ever going back there. It's a shame because my first haircut was quite nice; not the best haircut i've ever had but still, i did like it. I wish i had kicked up a fuss in the salon but I'm too much of a sissy so I just said thanks and left the salon as fast as i could with my head hung as low as possible trying to hide the mess she had just made above my eyebrows. It was my friends who told me i should complain and i think that illustrates the point quite well. Usually if you're friends don't like your hair cut they'll be polite and pretend to like it or just won't say. This time they are telling me it looks outrageous and i should definitely complain. I find it hard to believe that a professional hairdresser could actually be responsible for the look i'm sporting right now, and just think after having waiting half an hour she could've at least dedicated her attention to me for the 2 mins it would've taken to cut my fringe properly. read more

I felt like trying something different with my hair and my friend recommended me this salon. First I had a consultation with Peter and I showed him a picture to give him an idea what I wanted. I decided to go all really light blonde. Peter was really patient and answered all my questions (I was really scared:)) Then he made me allergic test, just to make sure I wasn't allergic to hair colourants. Then I made an appointment with him two days later. But when I came to the salon, I saw firemen and sensed a horrible burning smell. I was told by staff that their tumble dryer flamed up(thanks God, everybody was okay) and she sent me to their other salon on Grassmarket. When I came in, I was warmly welcomed. Everybody was so smily:) And also busy as hell, but no-one looked stressed. Then Peter talked me through how he was gonna do my hair again. (loads of highlights + toner). As I've got loads and loads of hair, I believe I must have been a nightmare for doing highlights:D But Pete put so much effort in it. then I got an amazing hair treatment (my hair seems much healthier) and really great haircut. I also got a 30% discount for the next appointment. But! A few days after I just wanted to go back to darker blond, couldn't get used to be so light. So, feeling really awkward I made another appointment with Peter. But when I came in, apologizing for changing my mind and basically ruining his work I was reassured that there is nothing to feel embarrassed about. So after consultation Peter showed me what colours he would recommend(two shades of darker blond) and I agreed. Now I'm really happy with my hair, feeling great! I have been to lots of hairdressers in my time and Colin McAndrew at Medusa is by far the best hairdresser I`ve ever had. To say he's an absolute genius at cutting hair would be an understatement! I`ve got really curly hair which is easy for a hairdresser to make a mess of (as indeed many have done), and yet Colin consistently manages to make my hair look really cool whilst being easy to manage. Also always a fab atmosphere in the Medusa salons as all the staff are really welcoming without being in your face. I used to get my hair done by Erin, who's amazing! Sadly she left the salon earlier this year and I made a huge mistake of returning to Medusa on Teviot Pl. To start off, I've been told that the booking I had made did not allow the sufficient time for Ombre, which was a complete nonsense for two reasons. One, I've always booked the same service and always got ombre done without any issues. Two, within the timeframe of me being in the salon, another customer (with much longer hair) came and left with her ombre done, with at least 30 min to spare when compared to my visit! Another thing that has to be said is that the manager of the salon has an extremely poor attitude. She came out to see me when I pointed out that getting my ombre done under this particular booking was never an issue before, and even though I had confirmation of my previous bookings, she still claimed that fault was on my part and it was not possible to do an ombre. Me being a good sport thought: "OK...I'm here let's see what they can do" (should've left right there!). Kay who was taking care of my hair was meant to do my roots, put a little bit of pink on the bottom to create slightly rose gold look, and cut my hair. She did 2 things right: cut and roots. As for rose gold, Kay somehow managed to make my hair an awful shade of purple and had the audacity to claim that it looked good. It didn't! I know when people are trying to sell BS, and trust me, that was it. Speaking of BS, the manager tried to sell the same BS when I was paying for that terrible service. Quite frankly I would've refused to pay the usual fee, had I not had a 50% discount, which was the very reason why I made a booking in the first place. That discount was an encouragement for Erin's regular customers to return to the salon after she left... Fool me once. Please know that I'm not the kind of person who likes to argue and refuses to pay once a service has been performed, as poor as it might have been. However, when you leave a reputable salon with the knowledge that you'll have to fix your hair by yourself at home it's just not right. Anyway, one thing is for sure, I will not be returning to Medusa on Teviot Pl! Considering the prices at the salon I'd expect much more....on all fronts, but most importantly a better customer service from the manager, as oppose to this "we're so busy here we don't care if you stay or leave" attitude. I had a not super great experience here...I've given it three stars because everyone was friendly, the place was bustling and nice, and they gave me an appointment basically at a moment's notice. My problem is that there didn't seem to be much room for me to get the style I wanted--there was definitely a feeling that the hairdresser knew more than I did and was going to go ahead and give me the cut she thought I needed rather than truly listening to me. I have challenging hair--fuzzy, wavy, coarse in parts and fine in others, etc. It's also giant and puffy. It's the story of my life that stylists never believe me when I say "don't go too short in back because it will stick out funny" or "My hair doesn't really lay down into nice layers". So I came out with short layers despite having said these things in the initial consultation. It's partly my fault for not being more assertive during the actual cut, and partly her fault for nodding and smiling and then doing what she wanted to do anyway. I won't be back, but I think for most people with normal hair, this would be a good place to go. Now I have to find a hairdresser that can deal with my hair situation here in Edinburgh. I've eventually found one in every city I've lived in...the quest begins. read more

One of the worst haircuts I've had - my hair now looks like a helmet regardless of the amount of product I put in, or styling. Although the haircut is probably technically fine, she paid absolutely no attention to the shape of my face or the texture of my hair, which is something that I would definitely expect from a hairdresser that charges so much. I am very very shocked at all of these reviews - clearly its just friends and family memoirs of the salon. Totally biased. Never have I felt so humiliated, neglected and disrespcted in my entire life being in a salon. I called up in advance and asked for the training hairdresser to do half a head of highlights. I have been doing blonde highlights for the past 10 years and all I needed was the roots. As I was using the trainee the agreed price over the phone was £35 for highlights . Once I arrived I was subject to 20 mins of critism and abuse about my straw hair, the bleach damage, falling out and was assured that I must do toner, plus shampoo impairment treatment. I was under extreme pressure to do as they said. My only request, do my roots and dont make my hair any darker. After 3 hours of patiently waiting and putting up resilience to no toner, 1 tonne was toner was applied and I left the salon with black grey hair. Upset, I started crying only for the staff to make me think I was crazy. Screamin that my hair was blonde and better than it ever has been was a huge disrespect to me - not only for my hair but also for my inability to see the new hair colour. IT WAS GREY. I refused to pay and returned the next day to the senior stylist. Noone was hospitable and I was looked at like dirt. Again no sense of accountability. Telling me I chose the wrong hair colour. That I am incapable of being blonde. That I knew what I was getting into. TRUST ME - I have been going to hairdressers for the past 10 years and never have I ever been as badly disprected as I was there. Finally I allowed them to do what they must, only in the end for it to come out brown. I wanted highlights. The initial price was doubled. Just had my hair touched up and styled by Bryony. She was great- really listened to my backstory of how my hair got to where it was upon walking in, listened to what I wanted and took a look at the pictures I had brought. She explained what she was doing every step of the way- even when washing my hair, she explained the products she was using, etc. When I went in, I had a lighter brown balayage, which I had done in December. I am from the States and only get home every 6 months. I use to wait until I went home to get my hair done, but recently it just hasn't been looking the way I would like it. I explained that I wanted it a bit brighter and more blonde, but still to keep the balayage look. She did exactly that. Using the new illumina glossing system by Wella, my hair looks bright and shiny. Although it is a bit more than I would pay back home- often times, you get what you pay for, and with this I am happy to pay the higher amount for Bryony's magic. This month they are having a color special for 40% off all coloring services, and when this isn't in place they offer student discounts- which works for me. Also, they offer a full coffee service- latte, cappuccino, tea, whatever you like. The seats and washing stations are pretty comfy. Overall the experience was great. avoid at all costs, total rip off. offer discounts but they're not used, charging inflated prices for basic hairdressing in a basic hairdressers, you'll get an average service but be charged george street prices. read more

I would have given this salon zero stars if it had been possible. The stylist I had absolutely butchered my hair. I had beautiful, long, wavy thick hair and ended up with a thin, uneven bob/mullet type look. I showed the stylist a picture which she only glanced at, that had hair 3 inches below the shoulder, told her my hair was naturally wavy and that I don't style it. Even after I suggested that it was getting much too short, she continued to make it shorter, but started from the back of my head so I could not see what she was doing. I stupidly paid and left because I was so distraught at the horrendous cut, but once I got home I noticed the bottom was completely uneven. One side was NOTICEABLY shorter than the other. That threw me over the edge and I called and went back to have them fix it. The manager was nice, but I STILL ended up with an uneven haircut and the hair stylist I had the day before did not even apologise for her hack job. I am absolutely disgusted with this salon and I would not return even for a free haircut. Yes, I only paid for a stylist, but I would expect an even cut and what I WANTED at the least. RUN RUN RUN away from this salon. They can't even fix their mistakes. read more
