Located in the dungeons of the Ala Moana Mall, this cute lil cafe of drinks and dessert was a perfect place for a meet up with my girlfriends. We wanted to go to a spot that was open past 8pm with air condition and seating. After thinking of a spot with those requirements, Meet Fresh was the only establishment that came to mind. We felt comfortable to sit there for 1.5 hours talking, laughing, drinking (milk tea) and eating asian style desserts. For my first time, I decided to order my go to Jasmine Milk Tea 50% sweet with no toppings (no boba). I highly enjoyed my drink and I would go back there for my quick fix anytime. Since then, I've been to Taiwan a handful of times and have even visited the small town of Jiufen, where they are known for their taro and sweet potato desserts. When I saw the sign for meet fresh opening in Ala Moana, I was a little more than excited. After months of waiting, they finally opened. Meet fresh is located on the ground level of Ala Moana, between the post office and Nordstrom. They actually specialize in their grass jelly, but I prefer their taro paste and sweet potato balls. They have a range of shave ice desserts, hot desserts and drinks. I believe they even have those egg waffles, but I've never gotten them. The interior is nicely renovated and clean and bright. I'm surprised there is no restroom and that they are open late because I feel like the mall bathrooms close earlier than meet fresh closes. The service is pretty non existent. I saw this Taiwanese dessert joint while back but reviews weren't too appealing for me to try. Someone raved about this place and today it seem like a good day plus I saw lot of people eating inside. We decided to try their signature grass jelly dessert and oolong milk tea. The signature grass jelly was refreshing with some mochi balls with dark shaved ice underneath. I don't know why the shaved iced is dark but it's probably from the grass jelly juice. not sure. As for the oolong milk tea, it's pre made so you can only get it with full sugar or half sugar. A new Taiwan style dessert and drink shop that is located inside of Ala Moana. We shared two different Taiwanese style shave ice, one had boba and the other was pudding based. The desserts are different from your typical icy sweets and makes me reminisce about past trips to Asia. My friend and I enjoyed one of their shave ice taro desserts and again, although it's a nice welcome, it's not as authentic as I'd prefer it to be. The taro balls were mochi balls with a hint of taro flavor and the "fresh taro" was basically mashed taro. I was thinking of chunks of freshly steamed taro, not this taro byproduct. The cream was also not sweetened milk, but just your regular coffee creamer. The ice is chunky and crunchy which is very refreshing, but the brown sugar syrup is skimpy and lacking in intensity. Again, although it's nice and icy, it's still missing the flavor. The egg puff was a mochi egg puff consistency. It was not crispy or light, and very chewy. Disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of Asian desserts. Don't really care for red beans, beans, peanuts, and taro in desserts. On a recent outing with some foodie friends, we wanted to grab dessert and a friend highly suggested Meet Fresh (MF), a new business in town. I was a little hesitant but decided to go with the flow as several friends really wanted to come here. Located on the 1F Ala Moana Center mauka, Ewa side near Starbucks, MF is a Taiwanese dessert chain from Taipei that was founded in 2007. They now have 15 locations in USA, as well as in Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, and Vietnam. Very impressive. We had sushi that night and left the restaurant still hungry, but I did that on purpose to save room for dessert. I studied the menu and had a difficult time to select as MF as an extensive menu. Generally, I'm not into warm desserts, so my selection was narrowed down. I also wasn't in the mood for a milk tea nor smoothie. In the end, my eyes landed on the Double Taro Signature, which seems to be a popular item. I was going to submit my order but then a friend suggested I sign up for their incentive plan but passed so she offered to order via their app. MF is quite spacious and clean. When we arrived shortly before 7pm, it was on the empty side, but it was quite noisy with patrons speaking quite loudly. When 2 other friends got their drinks, I was so looking forward for my dessert but kept on waiting and waiting. My friend and I then noticed staff were just standing there doing nothing. I found it so odd that no one was assembling my dessert, so my friend ended up inquiring the status. Come to find out, our order was sitting on their counter in a bag. Very disappointed. I removed the lid and snapped photos. Now it was time to dig in. THE VERDICT I know why I'm not a fan of Asian desserts. I also don't really care for the glutinous taro balls and taro paste. Who knows how long our desserts sat on their counter? Long enough where when I removed the lid, the ice cream in my bowl was on the soft side and the ice on the bottom had semi-melted. My friend offered me her coffee creamer, so I poured 2 of them into my bowl. This dessert was palatable, but it lacked the sweetness that I look for in a dessert. I cannot really say much about the service because it was non-existent. As we ate our dessert, we noticed more people shuffled in and the place started to fill up. Impressive. However, the noise level got louder, and it felt like I was at a dim sum house with so many conversations going on. Not a fan of this ambiance. With its recent opening in Ala Moana and the fact, that we had never tried these types of Taiwanese desserts my friend and I was interested in checking it out. While saving our seats, she went up to order for us. You order at the counter, find your seat, and then wait for your number to be called. With its recent opening, there were a lot of workers working but it did take some time for our order to come out as they were juggling both in-store and take-out orders. The menu was vast with a variety of different hot and cold desserts, shaved ice, egg waffles, and drinks ranging from teas, milk teas, and fruit teas. Some items on the menu weren't available at the time. Both of us aren't familiar with Taiwanese desserts but we both decided to get our own desserts. I'm not the biggest fan of grass jelly so I chose the Icy Taro Ball. The Icy Taro ball was shaved ice with taro balls. They gave a good amount of chewy taro balls but the balls themselves tasted pretty plain with a slight taro aftertaste. The shaved ice was choppy and icy and came with a brown sugar-like syrup on it. The syrup wasn't overly sweet which was nice. It was refreshing but I don't think I'd order it again. Depending on what drink or dessert you get you can add on a variety of toppings such as red bean, taro balls, mochi, and peanuts which I found to be cool! We found Meet Fresh to be a nice place to meet. Since I'm not a huge fan of their dessert offerings I don't think I'd go out of my way to go back. It was a perfect beverage for me because I needed to eat and drink something before my blood donation! It wasn't too sweet and the taro balls gave me more nutrition! I also got a takeout order of the Signature Grass Jelly Hot soup which has beans and taro balls in it. A small container of roasted peanuts came in the package, but my mom didn't want the peanuts. She went straight for the grass jelly and was happy that it wasn't the cold version! I poured the contents of the takeout bowl into a glass bowl at home and mixed it to make it look better... Haha! Welcome this newbie in the Ala Moana Shopping Center mauna side street level near Nordstrom as they finally revealed what was behind that bordered up sign teasing me forever of itself. Just super excited that it's not just bubble tea as we do have several shops in the mall but offers Hot Red Bean Soup, and cool items from Icy Grass Jelly, Double Taro Signature, and Icy Taro Ball Signature which is what I got. Why three stars...the service who knows what "Mini Q" or "QQ" and other terminology cause when you ask obviously annoyed for already describing it for the million times apparently she points to the menu on the counter that describes it just simply as QQ Wintermelon Tea (which what I also got) has both taro and sweet potato balls with melon jelly. You can make your teas with full or 1/2 sugar which was never offered select teas can be made without sugar. Okay the Icy Taro Ball Signature and this Taiwanese version of Shave ice was a delightful cool treat. I don't really do grass jelly so this option was perfect for me including taro balls, taro paste, potato balls, boba and shaved ice. I imagine the syrup is simply the from the toppings as it's not overly sweet but just the right amount so light and refreshing I actually ate it up instantly and barely finished all the toppings as they do give a generous amount I wished it was more shaved ice than the taro and potato balls...it didn't need the taro paste in my opinion. Certainly many say of how crowded it was...hmmm ya us local do flock over to anything new that's how we roll especially with offerings including boba lol!! I did wait for later in the day after work when I do need something refreshing and it was exactly what I needed on this hot summer day and seeing there were only a couple waiting in line I took that opportunity and was so pleased to see several tables as well to relax and enjoy it all before it melts. The thing is Taiwanese (or Chinese) desserts are usually not as sweet as the American counterparts. Especially the taro balls, they are usually bland and not sweet. We focus more on their textures than sweetness. Hot read bean soup: not much red beans in it but heavy red bean flavor. It was likely cooked for a good amount of time in order to get this grainy texture. The taro balls, bobas and sesame rice balls all had perfect texture. The only complain was the taro. The taro was not cut up at all and it was as big as my fist! How did they expect me to eat it? And because it was so big it wasn't completely cooked through. Icy grass jelly: very refreshing. Again the sweetness was just perfect. The shaved ice at the bottom absorbed the juice from the grass jelly and tasted so gooood. One thing I agree with other reviews: the coffee mate creamer! I am so happy Hawaii has a Meet Fresh. I used to only be able to get their drinks and desserts when I'm in Cali. My favorite items are the grass jelly, tofu pudding and egg waffle. The grass jelly has a herbal aftertaste so it might not be for everyone but it is healthy and can be eaten hot or cold. The tofu pudding, I prefer to eat it hot and I like that it's smooth and silky. The sweetness for their syrup is just right too. The egg waffle takes about 15 minutes to make so be patient if you're going to get this. The waffle is moist and eggy tasting. Meet Fresh is conveniently located inside Ala Moana Center on the street level (where Sears used to be). Depending on the time of day you visit, parking in the mall might be challenging and you'll have to park near Marshalls and walk over. I like that they stay open later on weekends because I can swing by for a takeout snack or dessert after dinner. Their prices are reasonable for the portions you get. The desserts in the medium size can be shared with 2 people or for 1 if you are hungry. They also have a large size that can be shared with a group or family. My friends and I were feeling a little devious after a great dinner, so we decided to sneak in a lil' sweet treat afterwards. Well, what was supposed to be a lil' sweet treat became a mountain of what could be described as a decadent, cooling dessert well worth its price point of $17 when split amongst the four of us. It was too good we began gnawing around the spoons until they cracked! The only gripe with the food itself is that there was an overwhelming amount of [azuki] beans! Every other bite was bean on bean action, just a caution for those who aren't as big of a fan of beans! The seating is quite plentiful, but best beware as some people have no class and were raised like pigs, refusing to clean-up after themselves as some of the tables were sticky. Overall, the staff there were incredibly welcoming, but we did opt to use the electronic kiosk to place our order. It's perfect for those especially struggling with social situations, or if you're like us, don't want to feel judged for placing an order for something so decadent that would most definitely send a Victorian child into shock! The wait for the food was a bit longer than expected, you could've streamed "All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault)" a little less than three times but as we don't visit here regularly, maybe it was a one-off day, or maybe it's the usually length it takes and we just weren't aware. I love having this special Taiwanese dessert and sharing it with friends that have never had this before. compared to the San Diego location, there honestly isn't much difference. the service is just as slow, but the quality is worth waiting for. they maintained the integrity of the ingredients well, especially for something so new here. You can order and pay at the counter or on the kiosk (I like looking at the pictures and adding on what I want without shame on the kiosk). It took them only a couple of minutes to make the grass jelly signature bowl, but then it took AGES to get the second bowl (taro ball bowl) finished. so, the whole time, the first bowl was just melting on the counter because they never called our number. it's worth going back if you want to bring friends that haven't tried before. it's a little pricey, but it's practically a meal in itself too. This was my first time trying this place in Ala Moana. Normally I would just go for bubble tea but ended up over here instead. I ordered the icy taro ball dessert. This is the Taiwanese version of Shave ice and came with taro balls, taro paste, potato balls, boba and shaved ice. I thought the wait was a little long and there wasn't really a good way to know when your order was ready besides checking up on it at the counter. I wish there was either a number system or they would text you when your order was ready so I wouldn't have to get up from the table and wait there awkwardly. I have to say they were very generous with the toppings, and I liked that the dessert was light. I like trying a new place, but honestly, I probably wouldn't come back. Came across this shop while walking around in Ala Moana. It's located near spectrum and Foodland Farms. We went there on a Saturday so it was pretty busy but it didn't take long to get to the front of the line. I ended up ordering the most popular which was called icy grass jelly and a boba drink. The icy grass jelly came with shaved ice on the bottom covered with grass jelly and then some toppings. They also give you one little thing of creamer. I tried it without the creamer, didn't have any taste to it then I tried it with creamer in it and it made no difference. Still had no taste. Meet Fresh is a Taiwanese dessert shop. I've been here a handful of times and enjoyed it every time. I either get the cold double taro signature or the hot red bean soup signature. They're both excellent , but the hubby prefers the hot red bean soup. I love the taro balls, rice balls and pieces of real taro that they put in there. read more
