On this visit, I chose Cocomama for part of the trip. Cocomama is close to Fredericksplein, which is the main artery for some hip places you'll want to go. It is near the city centre, but not too close, otherwise it gets tacky. The ladies at the front desk are friendly and helpful. They give you a full tour of the hostel, which was once a brothel. Just my luck... In the basement, there is a nice lounge area with shared kitchen and dining space. Lots of lovely couches to fall asleep on and a beautiful cat to keep you company. There is also a garden and you can go out there from 9AM - 9PM, only cigarette smoking allowed. Tons of books, movies to keep you entertained. You can also play old-school Nintendo. Wow brings back memories. They will also do your laundry for €6. If you don't have a tablet or computer, they can loan you one. Good wifi throughout the hostel. If you arrive before check-in time, you can leave your bag and check-in later, the front desk open 9AM - 9PM. I stayed in a 4 bed coed room aptly named, "The Brothel Room." Beds are comfy and also there are lockers in the room if you need to lock up something. The bathroom is in the room, so not as big of a hassle to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My only gripe is that they don't serve breakfast. It is probably one of the only places I've stayed at in Amsterdam that doesn't have breakfast. Bummer...

The hostel provided a fun environment for our two night stay and we were able to meet people visiting Amsterdam from all over. Unfortunately, the day after we checked out of the hostel my room mate woke up with bed bug bites all over her back and on her face. I understand that this is the risk you take when staying in a hostel, however I always expect for the staff to do thorough examinations of every bed before a new guest checks in. We immediately alerted Coco Mama via email about the bed bug situation. We told them about the time and money that we lost having to dry clean everything we brought into their hostel and asked for them to check the beds we stayed in. I received a response telling me that unfortunately things like this happen in hostels. There was no apology or mention of a partial refund for our stay. I reached out two more times about the situation and inquired about a refund and got no response. I find this to be completely unprofessional and telling of Coco Mama. It's unfortunate that what started out as a great stay ended up costing us time, more money, and a bad case of bed bug bites. I would not recommend staying at this hostel.

The shared dorms are genuinely like a prison - metal bunk beds with metal cubbies underneath, no privacy at all, and at night you can hear EVERYTHING. Every little movement or breath from yourself and your roommates (not to mention the hallway and lobby, due to a complete lack of insulation) is amplified and echoes because everything in this room is metal, cold and hard. The vibes in the room are terrible and that alone makes me want to never return, but the worst part was the shower. The faucet in the shower is a button that, when pressed, sprays water at maximum pressure (seriously extreme, hard water pressure) for about 30 seconds and then shuts off. If you enjoy a relaxing shower like I do, avoid this hostel. If you enjoy the feeling of being blasted with water so hard that it stuns you a bit and hurts, then I supposed you'd love it. The degree to which this hostel sucked was, in a word, inexcusable. I would not stay here again if they paid me.

The worst hostel in Europe?…read more I don't know where those people were staying but I can tell you a few stories about bad hostels. Hans Brinker is not that bad and with the price your paying, to stay at a prime location this is most definitely a 5 star stay! You get what you pay for after all! The bunks don't have ladders, that was problematic at 4am I can tell you. There is a smell of the ganja, despite the 'no dope' signs. The clientele won't be getting into any country clubs anytime soon. There's you, and 500 odd other people staying there so check in and check out requires patience (especially the 10 am checkout!) However, breakfast is included. There's free wifi. There's a nightclub in the hostel. There's drinks promotions constantly. The staff are lovely despite putting up with tourists in Amsterdam all day (if you get me). You are unbelievably central when you stay here. There's lovely restaurants right outside the door. The rooms are safe and ensuite (ensuite people!) and the beds are halfway decent. There's lockers in the rooms, free of charge. It's reasonably quiet at night (as everyone who's still awake is in the nightclub). Everyone staying seems friendly. I would definitely stay again, not even one naked person accosted me (seriously, I have lots of stories about bad hostels....)

As a solo female traveler, I felt safe, relaxed, and inspired to do work, even at night. This hostel was in a convenient location. It also had everything I needed, including, but not limited to, good vibes and a very comfortable bed! I suggest taking advantage of the free walking tour. It was fun, and I learned a lot. Lastly, the hostel was always busy, so I got lucky with getting pictures with barely anybody in it. It seems like it would be a rare sight. Without a doubt, I would stay here again! The bar downstairs is a lively place to meet other travelers with a designated smoke area with a pool table. I haven't stayed in many mixed dorms, but this one felt clean and safe and easy (especially as a woman) and when there was one person who made others uneasy, the staff helped to move the person. The location is perfect for any type of Amsterdam visitor, located near bars, shops, museums, and easily accessible to the tram that takes you all over the city! The few negatives are the bathrooms are all single use and very tiny. The shower rooms have little space to put clothes while showering so they don't get wet. The stairs are steep and slightly dangerous (but I never fell down them so maybe not as scary as they look). Finally, the kitchen is only available 13:00-22:30 which is not ideal for a traveler on a budget! Overall, I had an amazing time and would come back again!!

The Flying Pig Uptown was... an experience…read more It was loud, and crowded, and crazy, but I can't complain about any of that, because it is kind of what I expected. This location is down a relatively quiet street near Vondelpark, and even though it isn't the downtown location, it was still not only super easy to find and get to, but also within walking distance of everything downtown. My traveling companion and I opted for a private room, which cost more, but was still cheaper than hotels in the area. This was also nice because we had a place to store our belongings without fear of them being taken. The room itself was painted a macaroni and cheese colored orange, but it wasn't so bad. The beds were comfortable enough and even though there was only one blanket each, it was clean. The problem for me was the bathroom. It was kind of mildew-y, not particularly clean. Not dirty, but having a shower that isn't sectioned off from the rest of the bathroom made so that everything in there got wet. Which was annoying at best. Unfortunately, we stayed here after arriving in Europe - no sleep on the flight or the day we arrived, so by the time we went to bed at just before 7 or 8 p.m., both of us had been awake for more than 30 hours. As soon as I fell asleep, I was OUT. But my friend sleeps lighter than I do, and apparently, she was up part of the night because everyone was so loud. We checked out the next morning, as we were heading for Belgium, and now in retrospect, I think that a place like the Flying Pig is better for people wanting to stay more than one night. That way, they can really settle in, familiarize themselves with their surroundings, and get to know the other people staying there, which is what I think is one of the more fun aspects of staying in a hostel. Since we missed out on the community portion of things, I would venture to say we missed out on a lot, and that's why we didn't enjoy our stay as much. Or... maybe we're just getting too old. Either way, not a bad place, but know what you're getting into. As for me, I'll likely opt for a hotel of sorts next time in town.

Somehow they keep it lively in the common areas and quiet in the sleeping areas. The staff are super friendly ... from the front desk crew to the cleaning folks to the bar staff. Tati and Luna have been especially helpful! If we are lucky enough to return to Amsterdam, we will definitely stay at generator again.

As for the rooms, although my bed was very comfortable, there was only one toilet and one shower for each floor that was to be split between about 25 people. They did not supply any towels, breakfast, or even drinking water (that wasn't Bottled and costed €1). Not highly recommended, however if you have money and are just looking for a roof over your head it will give you that.

There's a smoke room open 24 hours on the same floor (when you know you're in Amsterdam ). Minus another one for the small ass rooms with miniature bunk beds. Everything feels so squished (barely any walking room), lockers are run down, and the bed linen doesn't appear to be the cleanest. The beds were so close that I could literally turn my head and see a random face less than 6 inches away... No Bueno. Sorry, going to have to take one last star for the awkward way the showers are designed. You'll get absolutely no privacy the moment you decide you want a nice hot shower and call it a day. You scan your key, open the door, and there's a shower divided by a sliding glass (see through) door, without another door to separate that from the room with bunk beds... meaning anyone can walk in any time on you. I never felt so vulnerable in my life. ***** No free breakfast included. Free wifi. Really clean showers (despite the lack of privacy). Body wash/shampoo included. The toilets are in separate rooms outside the main rooms. In a gist, you get what you paid for. I'm not picky so I had no regrets. Be warned that the cheap weekday prices will balloon into costs of €100+ for a bed in a 16 person dorm. We found the front desk and management to be pretty unhelpful, unfriendly, and extremely stingy. On our last night, we had a conversation with a friendly German man whose confirmed private room had been given away before he arrived, stranding him. There are no lockers, they will charge you to look after your bag, the €6 charge for a towel encourages you to improvise, and the free breakfast consists of bread and spread. When you get to your room, their will probably be a group of men smoking and drinking on the floor. They will probably return in the middle of the night to enjoy some boisterous rough-housing and shouting. The bathrooms are really bad. There is often no toilet paper or soap, and it's hard to tell where the toilet ends and the shower begins. It's probably a good way to pick up a preventable disease. The beds could be worse, but you will have someone's feet directly in your face. There's a lot of noise from the streets/nightclubs if that bothers you. The wifi was pretty good.

After pushing aside hoards of drunk tourists to reach the door of this hostel, the following will…read moreprobably happen: 1) You will press a buzzer and someone up a flight of stairs will, sighing, open the door for you. 2) As you approach the front desk, the staff will treat you with the same attitude you bring to a fist fight. I wouldn't recommend punching them right away, but I honestly couldn't blame anyone. 3) You will pay for your stay in cash--up front --and will understand why once you climb more flights of obnoxiously steep stairs to set down your things in your room. You will lay down on beds I honestly believe they scavenge from prison dumpsters. 4) After bearing the night listening to pounding club music from the tourist magnets downstairs, a group of drunk American teenagers will vomit outside your room and, unable to gain entry into their (read: your) room even after pounding on the door, one of the teens will slip in his own vomit and loudly proclaim his decision to piss on the floor. 5) Two drunk girls will enter and browse their phones on full brightness for about 30 minutes, making the room already shaking with terrible club music even more uncomfortable. One girl will drop something and argue with the other one for about 5 minutes about who should retrieve it. Once one caves and gets down on her knees on the floor, the other will whisper "he's looking at you", referring to you, awoken by their idiocy and deciding to check a few emails. 6) Around 10am in the morning a member of the gestapo police will open the door, letting in the stench of vomit and urine from 8 hours ago. He will wake you up if necessary and demand your name. He will then tell you your name is wrong, and retract his statement 10 seconds later saying "ok ok", and then again demand your horribly misspelled name is wrong, all before admitting he doesn't speak English. 7) You will again question why you ever agreed to pay cash up front. All this is true and shockingly without exaggeration. It's a shame rating this place requires granting it one star. If you're desperate for cheap accommodations, I would recommend committing a petty crime and spending a few days in prison instead.

Rooms are a wee bit stuffy,but nothing an open window couldn't fix. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Location was more or less central to everything; took me a 15-20 min bike ride to main attractions. I believe they rent out bikes,so rent one as soon as you get here. I found it a bit of a hassle to walk towards the center and find a rental,then drop it off by 5pm.

The bathrooms are numerous and spacious and generally clean, though definitely still bring shoes for the shower. The Beds are fine, and the prices reasonable, at least, for Amsterdam. The bigs issue with this place is the lack of an elevator, despite many levels, and the lack of electrical outlets. The breakfast is fairly extensive and you can eat breakfast, have coffee, etc. while overlooking the canal. The staff is friendly. They sell tickets to many museums as well as transit tickets. They can call a taxi for you to take you+luggage to the train station, airport, whatever.
