Good basic tasty and cheap sandwiches, served by a lovely couple who sometimes offer you free bread whilst you wait

We had to ask 4 times but we could also see they were busy (a very good sign) which explained the delays. Also when we met Em (who was very nice) who brought the bill over she mentioned that she was having staffing issues Hating to be a pedant but the sign is missing the apostrophe (we were told that they identified it two years ago, the installer did not have any in stock, an alternative selected and two years later still not there; the installer ran off

The cheesecake was quite (nicely) light, I could have done with more base and less cherry, but it was lovely. I noticed on the menu board that they also serve hot meals such as chicken Milanese and vegetable tortilla salad. the place is very sweet and really really warm. (As someone who is always cold, it was bliss - but if it's warm enough for me, then I suspect it could be too warm for others.) The service was very friendly and I will be coming back here to try out the lunch menu.

I've undergone a recent conversion to English breakfasts' thanks in part to my work canteen which reliably churns out excellent examples of English breakfast at its best, and, even, most healthy: delicately grilled tomatoes, lightly fried mushrooms, immaculately poached eggs and beautifully cooked sausages of surprisingly high quality. So it was with unquelled optimism that I set forth for the Star today in search of a hearty breakfast to set me up for the rest of the day. Alas, I was sorely disappointed. First to puncture my enthusiasm was the realisation that practically everything had been heavily fried and was glistening with a layer of fat. The mushrooms appeared to have been doused with salt, the sausage didn't seem to be much more than 30% meat, the 'grilled' tomato had a charred crust tasting of meat (ugh!) and I didn't dare touch the potato pancake after having established that its primary ingredient was oil. The toast, beans, poached egg and tea were slightly better, despite each nevertheless having their shortcomings. It might be expected that this comes with the territory - that low-grade ingredients cooked slapdash are all part of the charm of a greasy spoon. I disagree. As the nearby Brockley Mess shows, English breakfasts can be high quality and cooked with more love and care. After all, at £5 a meal, the Star Cafe's prices are not negligible. Overall thus, if you find yourself in Brockley/Crofton Park with cravings for an English, I'd advise you avoid the Star in favour of either the Mess (if you're Brockley based) or the Jam Circus (if you're Crofton Park-based and it's Saturday). Or there's always the DIY option, which will cost you a fraction of any of these. Whichever it is, your stomach will thank you!

I would recommend Mr S. to go again and give them a second chance - why haven't I given 5 stars? The price is worthwhile but not the best cheapest for a 'greasy spoon' tbh. You get good portions though and, for vegetarians, I always look out for decent food. Taken many friends there - they've always said the meat was well done and to their taste. Do try this place - parking is easy, they do sit in and take out and never been empty - unlike the B.mess. DIY? Unknown where you shop but never been able to make a good fry-up brekkie for less than a fiver - and their deals start around the £4 mark - not £5... Keep up the good work Star Cafe! Paul
