Huettenpalast is an unique "room" of caravans and cabins. It's a renovated old vacuum-production factory. It's the cutest thing you'll ever see. The owner, Silke, is so welcoming and did such a great job designing it and focusing on the little details. We wanted to stay in one of the caravans, but those were all booked up two months prior to our trip. So if you want a caravan, claim those fast! We ended up staying in the Berghutte (Mountain Cabin), which turned out to be awesome with the private space and window facing outside. What was cool was that most people staying at Huettenpalast while we were there were German families and couples on vacation. It's not like a hostel with a bunch of rowdy college kids. Breakfast was provided in the central area under the tree. There was water, coffee, tea, croissants, and fruit. Bathrooms were shared, but impeccably clean. Be sure to let Silke know if you're getting in past 7pm. The staff do not live on the premises, so if you don't have a key to get into the property, you're in trouble (unless you have an international phone, which we did not).

We arrived at the hotel by 10AM after a 30 minute bus ride from the Berlin-Tegel Airport. We weren't able to check in until 4PM but we securely stored our luggage in one of the hotel rooms. I think Hotel Ibis has a few locations in Berlin. The decor is pretty modern and European. The front desk attendants were helpful and do speak English in case you're traveling from the States. There are two computers for using the internet. They do have free WIFI, but it's very slow and you have to constantly log back on. They originally gave us a single room, but after asking to switch, we were giving a triple room with handicap accessibility. The room was comfortable, clean, and quiet for the most part. Our room didn't have much of a view, but we were only in our rooms to shower, relax, and sleep. The bed was SO COMFY. Though it's a twin size, I slept very well and wanted to take home the pillow. There wasn't air conditioning, but you wouldn't really need that until the summer. The shower had plentiful hot water and the bathroom was clean. There's also a small flat panel tv to watch German programs. They do have other European channels, but none from the US. It was cool to watch The Simpsons in German! The continental breakfast was included with our stay and is served from 6:30-10:30AM (I think) They have bread, eggs, cereal, sliced cold cuts, some fruit, nutella (!), pastries, yogurt, and an awesome espresso/coffee/hot chocolate machine. It was pretty delicious. The hotel has a good location. It's within walking distance to The East Side Gallery where you can see the artwork on the Berlin Wall. You can also walk to the Galería mall (they have some department stores), there's a small market where they sell fruit, food, and some handicrafts on the weekends. Most importantly, the Ostbahnhof train station is so close. The train station has lots of stores in case you need to buy something to eat or you forgot something in the States. The stores were open until 8PM which is convenient of course. The Hotel Ibis Berlin City Ost is a great central location when visiting Berlin and you will enjoy yourself in Germany's capital.

I do wish they had an indoor no-smoking policy because the smell of smoke was getting to be a bit much in the small area. Even if there WAS a no-smoking policy, the smell definitely wades in from the outside so there is no escaping it!

This was very much the responsibility of the hostel and they claimed they would refund the money to me since they were at fault, they just had to hear back from insurance. I've sent them about 7 emails since leaving and I've received nothing. Also had friends staying in a four person room and when they asked for the key, they were never asked for name or identification. Don't stay here. There is absolutely no security.

Breakfast isn't included but can be bought for a small extra fee. Nicely enough though there are a handful of breakfast places nearby. You can park your car in the quiet Erlanger Strasse if you are lucky enough to catch a free space. (It's a residential area.) Just down the road (30m) there's a big shopping centre where you can buy anything you need. The area further down seems to be a bit rough in parts but nevertheless interesting: loads of (multicultural) shops and eating places. A big plus is the proximity to the concert venue Columbiahalle. A bus goes straight there and by car it's only about 12 mins. Very handy!
