Mellow Mushroom is always a fun atmosphere. First time checking out the Roanoke location. Parking was plentiful around the building. No wait on a Friday early evening. A nice hostess seated us. A waiter quickly got drink orders of water and had them delivered in minutes. The table wanted a medium pepperoni and pretzel bites with beer cheese. The dining room began to fill up and some pushed up to their very cool bar. Our waiter had the pretzel bites app out quickly. So yummy with warm bread and hot cheese. The pizza pushed out probably 5 minutes later. The pie was very good, but overly greasy for my taste. The table enjoyed. I would return. 3,5 rounding up. read more

I met a friend here for a late lunch. We hadn't seen each other in a long time and our waitress was very patient with us. She had to come back several times before we were ready and we stayed after our check was paid. She refilled drinks and made sure we were taken care of the whole time. I had the magic mushroom soup which was delicious. It was flavorful and creamy. I also got the mushroom pizza. It didn't have a red sauce which made me tentative. I've been low-key mourning the loss of the Mellow Mushroom that used to be in Adams Morgan (RIP), so stumbling upon this one in Roanoke felt like a cosmic sign. Same funky vibes, same magical crust, same nostalgic happiness. Ordered the Holy Shiitake Pie and it absolutely slapped -- rich, garlicky, truffle-y goodness on that perfect chewy-crisp crust. The decor is still delightfully weird in the best way (lava lamp meets jam band poster wall), and our server was friendly, fast, and totally on it. Online they have a covered outdoor patio. Since it's raining, we had our puppy with us and we love their pizza, we are going there.... Over 10 miles. We get to the pizza place. Patio is covered with dirty, stacked patio furniture. The patio was closed up. It looked like it had been unused for years. So no family with puppy on the patio. No lunch. Went home. Thanks for a view of filth and clutter from behind your place and a good idea of what's happening back of house. Please don't advertise amenities that you don't provide. read more

I had dinner there tonight on 1/2/2026 with family at around 6pm. We got 1 pizza to share. The service was okay besides having to ask for refills and napkins.. however upon leaving the restaurant and making it back home about an hour later, my fiancé and I both had what seems like food poisoning. We could not get off the toilet with diarrhea. My stomach just now settled enough for me to get off the toilet at 11:30pm at night but it is still rolling. This restaurant did a great job serving our party of 30 on a Saturday night including dividing up separate checks with parents and kids at different tables. Food was delicious as it always is at a Mellow. Loved their tap takeover list of $5 crafts. There was a little confusion as other servers assisted in carrying out our beers but that was really the only snafu we encountered. Highly recommend this Mellow if you're in the area. read more

After 2 years of great pizza, we are stunned at our burnt pizza Tuesday night. I called in a large cheese pizza to go. We picked it up at 6pm ready to go home & add our own garden veggies. The pizza we got was so burnt on the bottom, the crust was tough & hard, the cheese was burnt so bad it looked like pepperoni. We threw it out! I called Wednesday & spoke to a nice man about it. He took my number & name & assured me the gm would make it right. After 4 hours, I called back. A young girl again took my info, said the manager wasn't in yet but would call me right back. That was 4pm yesterday. Now it's 2pm Thursday & my husband said "we're done". No more Mellow Mushroom. We've enjoyed your $26.00 pizzas forever & I just don't understand why a return phone call is so hard for someone. I did customer service over 40 years. I would have been fired for this unfortunate behavior. All I wanted was a new pizza. Now you've lost a customer who will be advertising for you. After passing by many times this goofy restaurant building, my friend and I finally decided to go try it out this 4th of July. What we found was more than what we were expecting. First of all, the place was very clean and relaxed with decorations from the '70. When we first arrived, we were greeted by two friendly hosts who one of them quickly brought us through the restaurant to a wonderful table where we had a view of the entire restaurant. There, our hostess greeted us with the menu and took our drinking order, which was just ice water. To eat, we ordered a Medium Special Pizza of the House, and when it arrived, it not only looked mouth watering but tasted even better. The crust was nice and crispy and the ingredients were fresh and plenty, and the cheese it had gave it a special touch and a taste I will hold dearly forever. It was like nothing I had ever tasted before, and I am known to love good pizzas. The waitress was very friendly and provided the best customer service one can wish for in a restaurant. For dessert we had their famous peanut butter cookie, and it was soft and freshly baked. As we left the place, the friendly hosts gave us goodbye wishes that only served to remind us of the wonderful dining experience we had and a desire to want to come back soon. read more

As always the pizza is yummy, but the service was abysmal! It took nearly an hour to get two small cheese pizzas. We were the first table seated on the patio, people that came after were done before our food came out. The server took our order and we never saw her again unless we went up to her to ask for the check and boxes. I love mellow mushroom and hope that this is a one off. Updating review to one star. We came in and we're finally greeted after 10 minutes. We were told we would have to wait for a minute while they cleaned tables. (Half the restaurant was empty, and there was only 3 of us). So we stood to the side. When she walked away to clean a table, another host came up, and immediately sat a table of 6.... then sat another couple.... then another...... Where was our girl who had us waiting?? No one knew. She walked away and we were forgotten about. After almost 20 minutes and not having a table, or seeing the host again, we won't be back. read more

Great place to go for a pizza baked in a stone oven. Nice selection of craft beers on tap that change seasonally. Their pizzas are the best things to go for, we have had the Hawaiian, meatball and several others, that are memorable. During the warm months there is a nice outside seating area and a small stage for bands. The staff is friendly and quick to help. read more

The trivia nights are fun and there are food options for everybody. Once I got the largest salad EVER and it was very satisfying, I loved the ability to order things like tempeh - a rarity in Roanoke for a vegetarian. However, I find it to be a little overpriced, especially the pizzas. Ambiance Is retro 60's diner and some 60's style psychedelia and some very cool black light art in the leeway to the loo. I mean, Alfred E Newman and John Travolta on the same trip? C'mon! I met my friends at the bar. Drew drew the brew for the night. Several crafts on tap as we enjoyed a few craft beer flights. All enjoyable. Wednesday specials included small pizzas, I ordered a pepperoni and my friends ordered cheese. Salads and wings were also ordered between us and the food was amazing. We felt at home. What a cool, funky pizzarea. I was digging the 60's decor and vibe. Totally groovy. Outside had repurposed sculptures that were so cool. A man on a motorcycle made from motorcycle parts, a Transformer made from car parts and a huge mushroom bench from bicycle parts. The outside wall covered in psychedelic design. Now for the food and service. Our waiter was pleasant and took the time to explain the expansive menu and gave his recommendations of pizza he liked. I forget the name of the pizza we ordered but it was so good. We opted for the thin crust. The pizza had Portobello mushrooms, carmelized onions and truffle oil. The truffle oil was not overwhelming. My wife and I stopped by Mellow Mushroom for some lunch on a Saturday afternoon. This was our first visit here. The main entry door faces the street but the parking is in the back and side of the building. We ended up going in through a door in the patio area and then walking through the restaurant to get to the main door where the hostess station was located. We sat in the patio area under the overhang as it was raining the day of this visit. We ordered bruschetta, meatball trio and jerk wings. All of the food was really good. They have a full bar and include many ipa as well as domestics on tap. The table next to us had the pizza and it looks really good. We will try the pizza on the next visit. The staff was attentive and friendly. The building vibe is really awesome and the music was great as well. But that made us sit inside cause it was a tap takeover and a special event. Didn't even know what was happening. Told several others same thing. Tables empty at taps but we couldn't sit there. Staff needs training. First impressions are at the door. Have competent folks as your greet staff. As a response to the BO. Then why was the tap takeover advertisement shown adjacent to the outside area and on your Facebook page? Also why were others told it was ok. Your staff said it was a tap takeover outside.
