Had lunch at their new location on Market Street yesterday and must say not a great experience. It took over 45 minutes to receive our food after ordering at the counter. Servers were going from table to table with orders in hand asking customers if this was their order. We asked a server after 40 minutes where our order was, then the owner comes out and asks us to give them a little grace and offered us a dessert. I'm not sure what the server told her but we were not upset at all just wanted to know what was taking so long as did the twenty people sitting around us. It was really unusual that more than one had the same order number on their table. So service gets a poor rating. Now about the food, nothing special. Certainly eatable but for us not worth what you are paying. We feel other similar places in town like Moes barbecue much better. Maybe you will have a different experience. read more

We came here for a late lunch, and laid out $50.64 for a veritable mountain of food-- a quarter chicken and ribs (4 bones) platter with sides of fried okra and zucchini, additional large sides of baked beans and potato salad, a huge banana pudding, and two refillable teas. The lightly seasoned and lightly smoked chicken stayed moist and packed with flavor to the last bite. Recommended. Ditto for the ribs, which separated cleanly at the bite. All four sides were top-notch, but we strongly, strongly recommend the fired zucchini ... and do not leave without a banana pudding in your tummy or in your hand. I must say this is some of the best southern food I have had in awhile. You know when you hear someone say food is made with love? Well this place is probably listed as an example. Growing up in the south, I know southern hospitality but here is truly a step above. The service from the moment you walk in the door is incredible. You feel like you're at a family gathering. Ok, onto the food! I opted to get a rib plate that included 2 large sides. I opted for baked beans and potato salad. This also includes 2 hush puppies and a drink. This is some of the most tender meat-falling-off-the-bone type of ribs I've ever had. Extra juice and extra flavor. The beans were great as a side, they had bits of meat mixed in that also spiced up the side dish. I'm a huge fan of potato salad and this one did not disappoint. The sweet tea I had also hit the spot. I know for NC this place might be a little more expensive than what people are used to, but I promise you it is worth it. Ari gave us a warm greeting. She was patient and friendly while taking our order, and giving suggestions. My family and I ordered flounder, porkchops, ribs, catfish, greenbeans(perfectly seasoned), collards, candied yams, okra, baked beans, macNcheese, and fries. Stopped by this location on our way home from beach one weekend. Were looking for something besides fast food. Not immediately off highway but that was OK. Plenty of parking right in front business. They require masks and have a temperature checking device as you walk in. You order at the counter and then they deliver your food. My wife ordered the smoked chicken breast and I ordered an all-beef hot dog. Both came with sides which we selected mac-n-cheese which was good and backed beans which were cooked with a hint of pimento. The restaurant was not that busy when we arrived so we thought our meals would be out in reasonable time. Our order took 20-30 minutes to arrive. Again this is not a very large place and line was not out door with the fact chicken breast has already been smoked. The entire meal was ok but nothing to write home about. We found this gem hiding in a mall on our return from Wilmington this fall. The owners and team working were so friendly with great service. You can't live in eastern North Carolina without having an opinion (and lots of experience) with BBQ, pulled pork, ribs, etc. But every so often someone will come along that just redefines what Carolina 'que should be. Enter MeMa's. Last night my wife and I were fortunate enough to take part in an event catered by MeMa's. On the menu was pulled pork sandwiches (served on their made from scratch brioche slider buns), pulled chicken sandwiches (again with the brioche), coleslaw, pasta salad, and chicken wings. It was washed down with a strawberry lemonade that could easily be referred to (although a bit un-PC) as "liquid crack". If you still had room they also served a choice of either homemade apple crisp or strawberry-banana pudding. WE MADE ROOM! Now I am no foodie and find gas station hot dogs to be ample food for my taste. But last night we both were just taken aback. We are locals and - unfortunately for us - didn't even know about MeMa's....yet! The food was simply delicious. The pasta salad was light but filling. The pulled pork and chicken both almost melted in your mouth. The coleslaw was like none other. It was so fresh and had a bit of fruitiness to it that really played well with the flavor of the wings. And the dessert? Oh my! It tasted like the apples in the crips were picked just that day. We are so excited to visit the restaurant soon and get another little taste of MeMa's. Was really surprised this little town has such a gem. The bbq is cooked to perfection. The star of the show is the fried mushrooms though.

This is the real deal - just great product, no hype required. We had both ribs and chicken because we wanted to try both, and we ended up taking some of each home. The meat isn't sauced, it is just smoked, and the ribs still have some chew. You can tell when ribs have been baked/steamed and then crisped up, and that's not what you get here. The chicken is cooked thoroughly but still moist and delicious. They make their own sauce, but we enjoyed our meats just the way they came out. The potato salad is almost as good as my wife's (which is to say really good), and the hush puppies are excellent. We would like to try more of the sides when we have a chance. A clean and simple dining room with very friendly staff. We will be in again the next time we're in the area. MeMa's also caters, and I wouldn't hesitate to order from them. We did read the reviews before we decided to try it, and noticed that the few things they were dinged for (paper plates, etc.) had been addressed. Very smart. read more

MeMa's is located in Burgaw, NC just off I-40 in a small strip mall. I first heard of this place from the board on I-40 last year. I am kicking myself for not coming here sooner. I came here during Covid-19 pandemic and just like many places they are requesting you wear a mask and the tables are pulled apart. On their menu is BBQ pork ribs, chicken, pulled pork BBQ, flounder, catfish, shrimp. Another customer told me about the hot made to order doughnuts available on Wednesdays. On this visit I had the ribs & chicken combo. The ribs have a dry rub and are very good. My 2 sides were potato salad & baked beans. I must profess these baked beans are very, very good. This was an absolutely amazing restaurant!!! The food was cooked perfectly reminding me of my grandma's Sunday cooking when I was a child. Likewise, the staff was friendly, helpful and engaged. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich, he said it was the best he has ever had (it was moist and delicious and not greasy) and it was served on a beautiful butter topped roll. He had the potato salad on the side which was creamy, smooth and fresh with just the right amount of seasoning. He also had the sweet potato fries which were light and crispy with a light amount of cinnamon sugar sifted across them. I had the fried catfish with the perfect hand breading that was light and flavorful; and I also had the fried mushrooms which were the best I have ever had. They weren't whole mushrooms but sliced with light breading so I could savor the taste of the mushrooms. I don't think I can write a review that will do this place justice. Everything about our experience was AMAZING! There was 3 of us in our group traveling from Wilmington to Raleigh. We saw the billboard on I40 and decided to stop for lunch. You know how can walk into a new restaurant and feel like you are putting the staff out with your presence? Like they are doing you a big favor by serving you? Well this was the exact opposite of that. These ladies (pretty much all family) were all so nice and happy and seemed genuinely glad to have us there. We were greeted immediately by the nicest woman who took our temperature and then asked us to wait a couple of minutes while they cleaned and sanitized a table. It looks like this was a counter service restaurant pre-Covid but now they give you menus and provide table service. I think one of the MeMas took our order and brought us our drinks. She was just so friendly and hospitable I felt more like she was hosting us in our home rather than serving us in a restaurant. The food was perfect. I got smoked chicken with Cole slaw, potato salad, hush puppies and creamed corn. The corn which is not on the regular menu (but maybe it should be?) was the best I've ever had. Our table also had ribs, delicious pulled pork and other sides. It was all so good. And their BBQ sauce was so good we had to buy a bottle to take with us. MeMa's is a destination restaurant worth going miles out of your way for. We got to talking to the ladies and found out they were planning to build a free standing restaurant and event space when Covid came along and they lost funding. See the pic for a better explanation. MeMa's is straight southern BBQ. No rubs, no saucing, just meat smoked for the right amount of time. I had ribs, and being a pit master myself from KC, I was first surprised at the NAKED ribs!! BUT the meat fell of the bone, the smoke level was spot on and type of smoke was mold, not bitter. I was very surprised. Being a KC guy, where BBQ sauce is king, I tried their sauce. It was another pleasant surprise. A cross between a Carolina vinegar and KC ketchup with brown sugar. It was tangy and sweet and unique. My rating is not about the quality of the food but the service was a little slow at a lunch time. I will go back! read more
