There's plenty of architecture, old churches, forts, and other things in this area! This memorial is not that. This particular memorial serves as a gravestone for the 100,000 Filipinos(mostly civilians) killed during the Battle of the Liberation of Manila from February to March 1945.
The square is just a small park with a monument. It's peaceful considering what it represents. The guide told us that many of those deaths(whether whole bodies, infants, or pieces of bodies) were piled, burned, and buried here by the Japanese. Online, I can't find anything to confirm that. Various things online talk about how this was a common grave for all of those lost. There's also talk about how this memorial serves as a common memorial for the named victims as well as the nameless.
While it's not quite as big, it gives me the same kind of vibes as the 9/11 memorial in NY. Thinking about 100,000 civilians being killed during a battle that they had nothing to do with. Devastating.
I'll likely be back before 2045 but I'm already planning my trip for 2045. There is a little section on the back of the memorial that has a time capsule. It was put there in 1945 and according to the guide, it has the names of all(or mostly all) the 100,000 victims. The capsule is supposed to be opened in 2045 and I imagine they'll have a huge ceremony for it.
If you're checking out sites in the area, definitely swing by this square for a sit, meditate, serenity, lunch, or whatever. read more
