Workers tend to use gloves that touch coins and bills and also directly handle food (sprinkled salt with the same hand). I think it's part of the experience, and I thankfully haven't had any issues (I have a sensitive stomach)! Good number of stands with pantry items (jarred items and bagged spices), some souvenir vendors, and other stalls for food and drinks. I traveled solo and felt safe the whole time but I also tend to have my belongings directly on my person in front of me and keep zipped pouches for other items. I was also able to pay with card at all vendors (though they preferred cash).

My aunt, being the kind soul she is, called out a pickpocketer in the act and he harassed her. Be sure to keep your belongings in a safe place. (Man pickpocketed had his wallet in his back pocket.) Try to order food in Italian, you'll get a better, friendlier response, even if it's not good Italian. The food is very affordable so step out of your comfort zone and try something new!

I happened to peek into Antic Friggitoria while we were passing by and noticed a handful of local men munching away on sandwiches. I wanted to try one and went inside but they were sold out. Instead, they brought out Arancini (risotto balls with stuffing, rolled in breadcrumbs and deep-fried), piping hot and the size of a large fist. They were crisp on the outside and molten hot inside with a tasty stuffing of ground meat and veggies. It was a very filling snack and we shared 3 of them amongst four of us. A great little local hole in the wall for food to go. Recommended for sandwiches and arancini.

Reality is, the 'mercato ' element here is dead, following recent moves to improve the locality which have amounted to nothing. A tour guide told us that locals are gutted, with en masse shuttering of market stalls in anticipation of greater things, only to be followed by niente. All that remains are a handful of restaurants opening anomalously amongst the dark, quiet alleyways. There's no hubbub, no smells, no colour. The remaining glimmer of life is from the bars that open in the evening: some of them are nothing short of amazing, like Taverna Azzura. Overflowing with locals drinking and talking loudly, partying like it's 1999. Friday night is the bomb here. I like to think that these locals are defiant in the face of the death of the old market.
