I wanted to make sure this small shop got on the map, Yelp-wise, even if, granted, now like 3 months after the fact... so I saw and ate and drank a lot of cool stuff on our trip to Portugal in January, but in one respect, it absolutely completely sucked: my wife got sick basically right when we landed in Porto, and felt at least a little sick the whole time, the worst being the city we most specifically came here to see, Porto. So I spent a good chunk of the first day looking for things you'd find in any grocery store, corner store, convenience store, etc, in the US, and having trouble finding them, at least, certainly not at reasonable prices. Apparently Portugal has never heard of throat lozenges or throat-calming teas, or really, convenience stores in the American sense in general?
Meanwhile, this small shop down the street from the airbnb we were staying at, from the outside, looked just like one of the mainly Port wine wine shops surrounding it, this being the heart of all the port tasting rooms. Turns out, I learned midway into our second day here when I walked in mainly out of curiosity (I didn't need any more Port, I'd been buying it from all the tasting rooms directly), while they did have some good prices on Port, they also sold basically all the things you'd expect a convenience store to sell, including basic groceries, and for great prices, so my wife was covered for the rest of the trip on both tea and throat lozenges, also a couple lemons for the tea.
They also had some Portuguese spirits, which was also convenient, as I'd also been meaning to pick up a bottle of Beirão when I saw one, which I did and did.
Super friendly shop-keep helped me find everything I was looking for - given how small and tucked-away the place is, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the owner? read more
