Stumbled upon Mermaid's Cove while exploring the Old Town area with a friend. The girly boutique is full of ocean-themed decor and accessories perfect for bringing a bit of the beach back home! As the name implies, many of the items are mermaid-themed but I gravitated more toward the octopus items, like a tea kettle and a set of drawer pulls. They definitely have a large and unique selection for gifting, from candles and soaps to throw pillows and Christmas ornaments. Bring kids with caution, as many items are delicate- there is a dedicated area for them with blankets, clothing, stuffed sea animals, and coloring books. They also have signs up asking customers not to take photos, not sure what's up with that. read more

If you like mermaids, this is the place to be. There are mermaids of every type. Mermaid book ends, stuffed mermaids, mermaid pillows. And other sea themed creatures-- lots of octopus and sea nettles. It's a very cute shop. My husband and I stopped in and I found a stuffed narwhal which I bought for my narwhal-obsessed child. Only drawback is the lady working there did not acknowledge our presence until we bought something. For a good while we were the only people in the store and she got up, walked by us to the back, returned to the register, and did not make eye contact. I don't know if it was because it was a Saturday night and she was cold, or she was just over having to talk to customers or whatever; but it felt off-putting. Though she was very friendly once we bought the item and wrapped it up nicely, which made me think there was something else going on. read more

If you know a little girl or a big girl who loves anything mermaid, this is the place to go. They are all about mermaids and the ocean. It was so much fun just walking through this store. I reached out to this store over the internet and got a pretty quick email response as well as had a good phone conversation with one of the owners. One of my cousins from Denmark was visiting and her six year old just had to have a mermaid tail that you could really swim in. I reached out to this place and their prompt positive response was exactly what I needed. They had exactly the kind of mermaid tail that I needed in the little girl's size, and they were very excited about helping her find the one that suited her. When we came to the store, the experienced staff were expert about helping this little girl find just the right tail for her and I can tell you that they left with a happy customer. To top that off, her little sister did not get a tail because she is not a strong swimmer. to make her feel better the shop just gave her a little coloring book and mermaid soap that she treasured. I made a purchase with this store and vowed to not return, this was a long time ago, but both of the store owners treated me like a thief as I made a purchase and even asked for my ID when I gave them my debit card. Then they proceeded to constantly remark on how generous I was for giving my friend a mermaid bag and necklace. I think they're racist and honestly hypocritical like yea their shit was overpriced and they knew it but I needed a last minute gift and I was going to pay with it my surprising Asian money. I come here whenever I'm in the San Diego/Old Town neighborhood. (It's possible I've been here 20 or more times.) It's a beautiful store. With gifts that work for every budget. The staff has always been very kind and sweet to me. You are welcome to just come and browse-no purchase necessary. They even have cool cards (for free) to Café Coyote and Miguel's that offer a free appetizer if you eat at one of those restaurants. So, even if you're not really looking for a gift, go in and ask for an appetizer card before you have lunch or dinner. They'll be happy to give you one. And, though it's true that the store is called "Mermaid's Cove", they have lots of gifts that aren't mermaids. They have sea animal stuffed toys & books, pretty soaps and lotions, cool nautical-looking things and more. They also have a website, so you can peruse and purchase something online. Most recently, I gave my niece a very cute mermaid children's book that I got from this store. She really liked it. So did her mom and dad. I also see so many little boys and girls who come in absolutely, blissfully happy just to walk through this store. And, that's something that can't be bought. People young and old have experienced that charm that Mermaid's Cove has. But, I'm so disappointed with the reviewers who seem to have greater expectations from a gift shop. As gift shops come, it's a really fun experience. But, this is not Disneyland. It really isn't. And, it's not Nieman Marcus, so don't be disappointed if employees don't offer to hold your bags for you and tell you how beautiful you look. It's possible that the earlier grievances from previous reviews are from people who came in kind of grumpy anyway and just wanted to yell at someone. Shame on them. How unfair. read more

Cute little store but customer service was bad. Walked in and the lady at the counter just looked at me. No hi, hello, how can I help you or anything! That was a major turn off. It made it especially awkward considering I was the only one in the store. Gave it a 2 star because of the cute stuff they have inside. On vacation,fiancé is obsessed with mermaids, so naturally,she sees this shop and decides to step in. Lots of chintzy run of the mill,flea market,mermaid themed crap. What an amazing little shop. The store is cluttered with mermaid stuff along with a few other things, so it takes awhile to go through because small items are hidden or stashed behind others. They could use a visual merchandiser & a sale section. I had no idea Christmas was 50% off until I was almost done shopping, then found a sign that was 2 inches tall & asked. Came from Colorado and my daughter was so excited to visit this shop as she loves mermaids. Walked in. And the lady working there very rudely yelled at us from across the store to close the door. We had barely started to walk in so we are taken back by her urgency. Anyway, we felt super disrespected as customers and we walked right out. Will never visit this store again. We must have walked around and around all the beautiful displays and nook & cranny corners 4 times, just soaking it all in...everywhere you look a special item catches your fancy and draws you in. I've never before seen such a huge collection of beautifully crafted quality and unique mermaid & of-the-sea items! Art, shell-art, statuary, linens, ornaments, costumes, toys, home decor, books, greeting cards, inspirational plaques, and on & on! Things I'd never seen anywhere else!
