This is a hidden gem for theater lovers right in the heart of Lowell. I've been going to 2-3 plays a year for over 15 years and I've never been disappointed. My most recent play was Misery and all I can say is WOW! they did an amazing job working with a small set to create a story that delivered a fantastic performance. It is a small theater but there are no bad seat in the house. They also have special offers for tickets that can make the experience more affordable. The variety of plays include many multicultural plays or including multicultural cast members. I applaud their commitment to diversity. Staff is super friendly and accommodating. Parking can be street parking or you can park at the church lot next door during performance nights. read more

For years, I went to the Huntington, and various other theatre venues in downtown Boston. We thought the only "real" theatre was in the city venues. (I'm ignoring the big, traveling shows, which I don't consider "theater" as much as I consider them money-making-machines.) Wrong. Merrimack is the equal of any theatre company in Boston. It has an excellent organizational staff, from back office to artistic direction. They hire professional repertory actors from across the nation for each production. The staging and costumes are what *I* want to see: well-crafted, but neither "big budget" nor "amateur." We nearly always leave the shows talking incessantly about either the actors, the production, the play (and the stories / ideas in it), and how much we love coming here. We're on our seventh season now (season-ticket holders), and love it. Like all small, regional theaters, they struggle for money, particularly after some of the government underwriting disappeared (after which the ticket prices jumped). But even at current prices, they're less than the "big" theatres downtown, and every bit as good -- and often better because they're not so pretentious and full of themselves. I can't say enough to recommend the Merrimack. Pick a show, and go. They'll entertain you, challenge you, and make you happy you did UPDATE APRIL 2012 I fully, heartily, happily re-support my review above. I STILL highly recommend the Merrimack. one short note: The facility has always been a bit down-scale, and dated. During the off-season following the conclusion of the 2011-2012 schedule, they're going to do a substantial remodel. This will be good. But it will only make a great place even greater. read more

The great management team made our special event here run as smooth as controlled chaos can be. This place has a great set up for any event. Every one that we worked with from the front of the house to management really did a great job. I look forward to coming back as a patron and being able to relax and enjoy the show. read more

Excellent theatre experience! Intimate, professional, comfortable. Convenient parking, well-stocked and reasonably-priced bar/snackbar, comfortable and intimate seating with great views from anywhere. I brought my 10 year old daughter to Going to See the Kid on a Saturday night, and even though she was the only kid there, we felt very comfortable. Speaking as an actor, my view is different than the subscriber or casual ticket buyer, but none the less, let me tell all who'll listen, they are doing beautiful and significant work here. From giving new playwrights a forum to hold their work up in the light in, to bringing their audience the very best in contemporary theater, every season, year after year. It's a little bit old and rickety, but it's otherwise a very nice, professional theater/concert hall.

This is a nice local theatre. Having moved from NYC I am happy to have a venue to walk to. To date, we have seen 5 shows. I think they are trying very hard to present the best possible production they can.The theatre has been redone and is nicely done. This is an intimate room and provides a nice evening out in town. read more

I have seen many productions here. Nice for a night out in Downtown Lowell. The good service I received from the theatre staff added to the experience. Although some of the concessions are a tad pricey, they are worth it because of the kind and approachable staff. The shows are top notch and professionally performed.
