I called Roy, based on the recommendations for him on Next Door, when my washing machine stopped spinning. He responded promptly and came out the next day. I was at work, so my husband interacted with him. After looking at the washer, he charged my husband a fair rate and told him it was too expensive to fix and to buy a new washer instead. I shopped for washers and found them to be around $700-900 for a mid-level replacement. After some discussion, my husband watched a few YouTube videos, ordered $200 in parts and fixed the washer himself. About a month later, my dishwasher broke, so I gave Roy another shot. I sent him a message and got a response that he was on vacay and would contact me in a week. A month later and I'm still waiting for that call back. Meanwhile, my husband watched a few YouTube videos and fixed the dishwasher last weekend. Roy gets 2 stars, because he's apparently very effective at getting my husband off his ass to fix our appliances. Other than that, I can't comment about whether Roy can actually fix anything, although I respect that others have posted that he can. I've never written a review before on Yelp but felt compelled to as Roy is honest and fair, and based on what I've read, good at repairs, if needed. Our main issue was a dryer that stopped working. He came out and found the problem which really didn't make sense to fix vs getting a new dryer. He charged $45 to come and diagnose the issue which is sometimes a very quick process so that's a very fair fee. Other companies were in the $120 range to just come diagnose. That stings if they leave after 5 minutes and tell you "thanks for the $120 but you need to buy a new dryer, good luck". We'll never use or reccomend any other service. read more

Well, mostly I fear how my partner will react as her world is a world of fresh food. So when our 15-year-old fridge started to fail, I needed to get if fixed -- fast. Roy answered my phone message with a text. I then was able to text him the symptoms and follow some of his troubleshooting suggestions. This was perfect for me because I felt like I was doing something to solve this problem. When it was clear that I needed a professional, Roy booked a time and showed up on the dot. He found and fixed the problem and only charged a small amount. He also assured me that this was a particular fridge model that is worth keeping. Roy came out to inspect my broken oven and concluded that the fan was broken. After ordering a new fan, he came back and installed it, but unfortunately the problem was bigger than just the fan and the oven still did not work. Roy explained that the additional parts would be very costly and suggested purchasing a new oven for less. Roy was extremely professional and honest. I called this business due to Yelp ratings for a needed repair/replacement of front loader washer bellow, the rubber gasket that had torn causing the washer to leak. The repairman was responsive, reliable and skilled. He was amenable to installing a non-manufacturer replacement part which I found online at 1/3 the price of the manufacturer's part. The installation was quick and there was no mess. The washer is working fine after 2 weeks. I would use him again. read more

We have never had a more fabulous appliance repair person than ROY with Mesa Plus Appliance 805.248.5707. There's not enough accolades to give him. We have an older Neptune Maytag washer and dryer each with multiple problems. A previous appliance company came out and diagnosed the wrong problem installing incorrect parts we were charged a lot for. We called Roy and he was like a skilled surgeon, finding the exact problem and even tracking down parts that had been discontinued. He never gave up on trying to save our appliances from the junk heap. We cannot begin to thank him enough for his perseverance and determination to repair our appliances. So GREAT!! I called because I was having problems with my Whirlpool fridge. The first thing I really liked was Roy asked for the Model # he wanted to verify he services my model...COOL!! We schedule an appointment for noon the next day and exactly at noon Roy shows up, clean, masked & gloved (Covid precautions in place ) ready to work. Having already given him the basics of my problem in our initial communication it took him 10 minutes to tell me "what happened, how to fix it and how to prevent it from happening again" $29 dollars later and I was breathing a sigh of relief, my fridge is not terminal and I can fix it myself Yay!!! Roy is honest, thoughtful didn't try to upsell and said "that should do it, but call me anytime if you have questions or need more help. Roy came out and looked at our ice maker in the fridge and was able to diagnose the problem quickly and even gave advice and cleaned out under the fridge. When he realized it couldn't be repaired (he looked at all options), he suggested a stand alone ice maker and explained what he would do if it were his house. Roy was a very nice guy and he knew his stuff! I called him this morning. He showed up this afternoon. Roy made clear that some problems are easy enough to fix your self but if I preferred that he look at it, his fee would be $120. I asked him to come out to look at my jenn-air stove. I explained over the phone to him that when I cooked, the smoke spews into my house. Once he arrived, Roy took the time to check out the stove thoroughly. He checked the jenn-air manual and determined that the stove was improperly installed. He made very helpful suggestions and recommended, for health and safety purposes, that I get a properly installed outside exhaust ventilation system. (Why this condo complex has not one was a quandary to us both.) Roy put the recommendation in writing which will be helpful in my dealings with my landlord (HOA). Roy gave me directions to fix the problem myself if I wanted and clearly quoted what it would cost for him to do it. 2. Communication. One of the only repair services to respond to email which meant being able to ask questions and respond on my schedule. It also allowed for sending photos. I had him perform a service call because my LG microwave was powering up, but not heating. He returned my call, scheduled a service, arrived promptly when he said he would, and got stuck right in fixing it, helpfully explaining what he was doing the whole time. Turned out the microwave decided to start heating when he was testing it, but regardless, the skill, personability, and consummate professionalism of Roy was greatly appreciated, and well worth the $30. I've had two very positive experiences with Mesa Appliance. A few months ago, our oven wasn't getting warm enough. More recently, our fridge wasn't getting cool enough. In both cases, I was able to book a same-day appointment with Roy. He was up front about the costs and confidently and quickly resolved the issues. He even went above and beyond by looking at our stove burner igniters and a potential leak under the fridge at no extra charge. He was very professional and attentive. The repairs were expensive, but I think that hard more to do with the parts needed for high-end appliances (Viking stove, Sub-Zero fridge) than the labor costs. This is the first time I had trouble with either appliance, so I don't have anything to compare the expenses to. He was able to tell me that this refrigerator would be under warranty from Sears and to call them to get it repaired for free. We needed repair on a Maytag range we inherited as part of a condo purchase. I called mid-morning and he was able to accommodate me that very same day. When he arrived it was immediately clear that the guy knew everything to know about the appliance. I agree with other reviewers here: he saved me money and went the extra bit to be helpful. He showed me what needed to be repaired and explained the how and why. With a slow burner he said I would save money if I got the part myself and installed it, and even suggested a place to get it. When I asked him about how to ask over the phone for model or serial numbers -- rather than direct me to where I could find that information, he immediately scrunched down on the floor to find the label way at the bottom of the broiler door and read me the number. He surely didn't have to do that!! Professional, courteous, and communicative. The cost of the repair seemed reasonable. We are definitely calling Mesa again if any of our appliances go awry. As new owners in Santa Barbara, we've been appalled by the handyman/repair/landscape business culture here where guys don't show up for appointments, or follow through with estimates or courtesy phone calls.
