Mesu is an okay restaurant. I didn't get to try the sushi but I did try the barbacoa taco. I thought the meat was a bit dry and it could use a bit more sauce or veggies. I personally think I should have ordered the chicken taco or gotten the sushi but my friend insisted this was the best thing on the menu. I likely won't take their suggestions again! lol This place is located in downtown chs and has really cool decor. The service was great as well, the server checked on us many times. My biggest concern is probably the pricing. I got a basic margarita and it was $17. They charge you $13 for the tequila, then an extra $3 to turn it into a margarita, then an extra $1 for it to be spicy. I likely will return to try a sushi roll but I think you can get better priced tacos and sushi elsewhere. I think Mesu is a very cool concept and it's very fun! This was the BEST food I've had in a while. I'm not easy to impress when it comes to my food. I LOVE GOOD, flavorful, hot food. I would have never thought to eat tacos with sushi but it was so good. I had the barbacoa tacos with the Tsumani sushi roll. If I wouldn't have had both, I definitely would've had more than one taco. The FLAVORS!! My Lord. This place was a whole vibe. The second we walked in, the hostess look annoyed and not thrilled. She seated us and gave us water & menus. However, once we were seated, no one bothered to check on us/take our order. We had a reservation so we were seated immediately. I am not a fan of sushi, so I stuck with the barbacoa nachos, which were fantastic. I'm not sure what seasoning they put on the chips, but it was heaven. We also split a clothespin taco, which was fantastic as well. She decided to get a lobster sushi roll, which she said was good, but said it felt awkward going back and forth between the two types of cuisine. Understandable. MESU is the newcomer restaurant that recently opened on King street. We visited around the holidays and had a reservation for 4 people. We arrived about 10-15 minutes early but they didn't make a fuss and were able to sit us right away. The menu is 50% sushi and 50% Mexican. The two styles are not blended as I was kind of expecting. (Taco sushi roll anyone?) We started with the chips and queso plate which was enormous for queso standards out there, so much delicious queso was served. The chips that came with the queso were a really unique and special homemade chips with spices that tasted like doritos. They kept refilling the chips and that alone was an outstanding experience. For the main meal I ordered the chicken wings taco, which is a fried chicken taco, not very authentic Mexican but it packed a lot of flavor and was really great. The tortillas felt and tasted home made which was a really great surprise. We also ordered a couple of sushi rolls to share. Spicy tuna and salmon, they were both good but nothing extraordinary, I feel like the mexcian side of the menu is the more adventurous one. We were lucky to arrive during happy hour and I had a really well priced margarita and mexican ashtray. For dessert we shared the churros rellenos (stuffed churros) which were freshly made and really good. The portion was really big with 4 churro-sticks and a dark chocolate dipping sauce. My wife and I moved to the Charleston area in August and this is our go-to spot when we get a babysitter. Chef Jelo is THE BEST. His creativity is second to none. I went to Mesu with a friend on a Friday night. We wanted to try one of the newer restaurants in Charleston. I initially thought it was a Mexican-Japanese infusion which sounded really interesting. I would have liked to see a combo of some sort where a person can order a little bit of both. I decided to go with 2 tacos and we both split the queso and chips. The food was all delicious and well thought out. Everyone in the place seemed to be having a great time. I also enjoyed the margarita with blood orange. It was also delicious. The only concern I had was how long it took to get our food. It took almost 30 minutes to get chips and queso. That seems to be something that can arrive fairly quickly. Our server was apologetic and we were in no hurry so it was not a big deal. However, if we had somewhere to be, that would have been frustrating. I think Mesu has got a great menu, a lovely restaurant and friendly servers. A few tweaks and I would have given them 5 stars. I look forward to returning again. read more

Chips Trio of Guacamole, Queso and Salsa ran $15 on the menu. The chips had a nice seasoning and the trio was fresh, but nothing extraordinary. Tacos: The tortilla is actually quite nice and an interesting corn and flour mix. After that the toppings are a bit interesting but the rest is ok. At close to $6 taco the portion of protein is woefully lacking. The fish taco was very wet and dripped significantly as soon as you lifted it. The chicken taco was overly sweet with the honey and apple topping. Sushi: all of the items we got were doused in eel and other sauce which made them lack luster. Drinks: The mango was nice and fresh in the margarita add. The main issue seemed to be little booze in the 16oz margarita. My wife and I are smaller folks and didn't feel anything after 16oz of margarita each. Other: there was a 4% credit card charge that was added but not mentioned anywhere on the menu. 4% seems excessive since most CC fees seem to be in the 2-3% range. Even with QR code menus the pricing between the menu and our bill was off. Went both ways the trio was more expensive on the menu, but the roll was charged 20 instead of 18. read more

Yum! This place is so good! At first thought, combining Mexican and sushi felt a little odd, but it totally works! We were staying at a hotel nearby and found this place when walking King Street. We were able to get a reservation same day on a Friday, though earlier than we were aiming for, so they are clearly popular! The Mexican street corn starter is super good. We chose 4 different rolls to try and all were tasty. The rolls came on a platter, making it easy to share. They have a great drink selection and the staff are very attentive. Honestly a bit underwhelmed- nothing bad here but nothing that great either. It is way too expensive for what you get in my opinion. Their special rolls come with about 8 pieces for $16-$18. I got the special roll of the day which was good but I preferred my friend's Tsunami roll. Honestly I've had much better sushi elsewhere and for less money. Special rolls are usually $9-$13 at a typical sushi joint so this place is definitely steep. I got a strong $12 rum runner and my roll was $18 so between tax and tip I spent $40 for dinner there and I wasn't even full after. In my opinion, I should be full if I'm spending $40 on food. There was also plastic in my wasabi. Service was solid- our waiter was a very nice guy. He was nice and friendly, got all our orders correct, and split the check perfectly for us. Our food came out pretty quickly. The table for 8 was really squished but our party was mostly small girls so we made it work. The lighting inside is pretty dark since the only light coming in is through the front door. They have a few small light fixtures but not enough to make it bright inside. There's some cool art on the walls and they have a big projector playing sports on the wall above the kitchen window. Overall, below average experience here. Came here for dinner after reading all the good reviews. Interesting concept as it's not a fusion between Mexican and sushi but essentially 2 restaurant cuisines in one place. The vibe is cool, happening. Great selection of tequila and other liquor. The service was fair. Our server was really nice just a bit busy and so not that attentive. I will say that they were pretty accommodating with some of our requests. The food overall is good but way overpriced. Drinks were good. We did the trio app of Queso, Guac, and Salsa. The guac was under seasoned. Queso was on point. Salsa was average. We also had the street corn skewers, average at best. Sushi rolls that are $20 or more is a bit excessive especially when the rolls were not that great. I had the lobster Rangoon roll which sounded good but just didn't have enough lobster or other ingredients to justify the $20 price tag. I also tried the fried pork carnitas taco. Portion of pork to tortilla was lacking. The pork was cooked great and flavorful, I wish I had more of it. Wife had the veggie taco which she said was really good. They didn't have many vegetarian options overall. She also had a veggie sushi roll with cucumber ($14). For dessert we had a doughnut churro which my girls devoured( probably the best part of our meal). Overall not a bad meal but also nothing to write home about. It's not super hot so for all of you don't like spice or heat, you can easily handle eating some. I had the dynamite roll which had spicy tuna. It was fried and topped with sriracha and a chili sauce. It was absolutely delicious! Every roll was bursting with flavor. My friend had a sashimi platter and she said it was some of the best fresh fish she's ever had. Went here for a girls bachelorette dinner and had made reservations weeks in advance as well as confirmed. We get there on time for our reservation and they tell us our table wouldn't be ready for an another 15 minutes which we were okay with(half of us had worked in the service industry for years so we get stuff happens) but as we were standing there in the front area like sardines because there isn't a lot of room and it was pouring rain out, we watch them serve the table they told us they were waiting on another very large pitcher of margaritas so that 15 minutes turned into well over half an hour. During that time the hosts recommended we go to bubbles and bourbon down the street while we wait so out into the pouring rain we went. Once they informed us our table was ready and we sat down it got better but it wasn't anything special. They never apologized for the wait either which was strange to me and the least they could do. I had the tacos with corn tortilla and a margarita which were good. The people in our group that ordered sushi said it wasn't all that great. Another thing to point out is that those who ordered sushi got their food at least 15 minutes before the rest of us so the expo of food was off which I'm sure can be harder to coordinate with tacos&sushi but not impossible. Ok...it's rare that a restaurant blows me away, especially after living in a culinary Mecca for so long, so if you're considering this cool fusion of Asian and Mexican, I'd highly recommend it! Besides being on the cozy side, it's decor is a mix of industrial, calavera (think Day of the Dead, or Perros Santos for you Riverdogs fans out there!) and plenty of talavera tile all around and multi colored stools at the bar. Quite visually appealing. The light fixtures also add a pop of "wow" as you walk in the door. The music is on the loud side, but is upbeat and fun. We ordered house margaritas, since I heard they were great here. They were excellent and I was feeling warm and toasty in no time! For appetizers, I ordered the Mexican street corn. Delicious! Not mushy at all. Very crunchy and juicy. Good flavor. For my entree, I got the tsunami roll (I'm the only one in our house who likes sushi) and it was literally perfect. Tons of flavor, not too much eel sauce (that can be quite overwhelming), good crunch from the tempura shrimp. Excellent blend of taste and texture. For dessert, I had the churros and chocolate sauce. Incredible. Perfect crunch and cinnamon flavor on the outside, while still moist and fluffy on the inside with the warm caramel sauce in the middle. Devine! Our party of 3 had chips and queso, fish tacos, chicken tacos, and a chicken quesadilla. Everyone enjoyed the food which was fresh and delicious. The chicken quesadilla was large and will serve as lunch tomorrow. I liked that the queso seemed fresh and homemade; it's not your typical jarred sauce.
