Apparently there is a two year waiting list for allotments in Bristol and it's easy to see why. A hell of a lot of Bristol folk are youngish renters. People who pay stupid money for a small first or second floor flat. People who simply have no access to a garden. Then there's the people who can afford to buy but the only thing within their price range is a new build flat with no green space attached. Being in Redland, the Metford Road Allotments are very popular. There are only about 50 plots but each looks very busy, with fruit veg and flowers and shrubs. Wander through the adjacent Redland Green Park and you will often see some topless man with a spade, working like a horse and sweating like a dog. As a result, these allotments are much less higgledy piggledy than their elsewhere-in-Bristol counterparts. If you want one you'll need to get added to the council waiting list. read more
