We have been to a lot of ghost towns but this one is by far one of our favorites. You'll be one of the only ones here. Now this ghost town is different from others because it didn't grow due to finding gold or silver. Instead, it started in hopes to grow wheat but did not last long due to problems with water right. Great ruins just outside of Wells. About 7 miles of dirt road off Metropolis road but okay to do with sedan. Well-worth the drive. Also consider the hike to 12-mile Hot Springs. This is just before the turnoff to Metropolis, right where Metropolis Road switches from pavement to dirt. Park right off the road and hike 2 miles through a beautiful canyon to get to the hot springs. Very easy, flat hike. read more

Use the directions in Kira B.s review. I attempted to use the Yelp directions and it was way off, not even close. Once I found it I was glad I did. Its impressive but I have a feeling most of it will not be around much longer. Whats left of the building is crumbling and the roof is collapsing. The arch is my favorite part. Great place for photos and if its raining just wait 10 minutes and it will change rapidly. read more

First off, to get here, use these coordinates: 41.228056, -115.056111 The yelp pin is waaaaaay off and you'll end up driving in three wrong direction on rocky dirt roads with rifle-totting, Bambi-killing hunters for well over an hour. :( Back to Metropolis, for an overview of the history, you can read here - http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/nv/metropolis.html Once I arrived at the last bit of remnants of this dead town, I was glad I persevered through getting lost and finally made it. I'm not sure there will be anything left much longer. The structure is in serious decay. Being used as a shooting target hasn't helped. Seriously, why are there idiots with no respect for our past and history on the planet?! Anywho...if you have a chance to visit, I would. Even though there isn't much out here and it's a long drive from where most normal people travel, it's cool history and beautiful views. read more

Since there is no actual address to Metropolis, here are the directions I used to get there: 15.2 miles from Wells, NV. Turn left on 8th Street, continue for 12.7 miles, take the first left after you cross over the cattle grate, drive 2.5 miles. I love ghost towns. Metropolis is a bit more recent (think 1909 - 1942) but still equally cool. There are two big buildings remaining - the hotel and school. There is also a cemetery but it's behind a big fence and I couldn't get to it.
