The rooms are clean and comfortable with good televisions and shower etc. We had a room overlooking the street and it had a bit of road noise so I suggest that you ask for a room facing the other if you want a quiet night. Breakfast was absolutely awesome - with a great choice of hot dishes which were very well prepared - kippers, salmon and scrambled egg, omelette, eggs benedict as well as the classic English breakfast to say just a few - much better than I get in Hilton's or Marriotts etc!! recommend!

I was told by reception on check out that the company 'Brilliant Hotels' have only just taken on the Staindrop Lodge and the pandemic has a terrible effect on the hospitality service. I appreciate these are challenges BUT the hotel SHOULD NOT be open to the public & taking bookings in its current state. Visiting Sheffield for the university open day. I booked Staindrop Lodge having read the reviews online, without taking into account the date of the reviews. Turns out they are very out-of-date. Since the hotel changed hands the older reviews definetely no longer apply! Neither does the AA 3+stars, in fact the hotel is no longer listed on the AA website. I was the only adult with 3 childern, 4+ hours from home. If I could have moved to another hotel I would have done! But despite constant checking through out our stay the nearest availablilty was in Leeds. Our visit:- We arrived late Friday evening. There were parking spaces in the car park but there was also a very large overspilling skip. I was surprised at check-in, Covid QR code display, no symptom check list or any mention of covid at all. We went to my daughter's room first, on the stairs outside the room door was a pile of dirty towels, crockery and used face mask. Inside the room, it was very warm/airless & stuffy. The toilet had a skid mark in the bowl and only one towel for two people staying two nights. Mine & my son's room was the other end of the hotel and very grubby. The overwhelming mildew smell from the bathroom (the extractor fan did not work). The kettle had water in it that was black & mouldy. In the wardrobe was balled up pair of used trousers that also contained a used pair of underpants & socks. The carpet was heavily stained and very dirty, used ear plugs around the bed. Ther toilet seat was only attcahed by one hinge, so slipped around if sat on. The cold water pressure tap barely dribbled out. The shower lever was very tempermental, so we had to keep pulling it to get the water to come out of the shower head. We also only had one towel (grey & smelly too). In both rooms the TV and kettles were lasted PAT tested in 2018. During our stay of three days I did not see any staff cleaning the rooms and/or public areas. Other than a box of disposable face masks and a tub of hand gel there was no consideration for covid safety. Yes I complained as did many other customers and continued to look for aleternative hotels in the area. We booked through Booking.com and paid at time of booking (£345). When I checked out there was finally someone on reception that looked as if he may be able to help - he did not. Other than repeat the hotel had just been taken over and they are planning a refurbishment, he just listened to my list of issues but said he was not authroised to make any refund as the booking was through Booking.com. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!! I now read that the hotel was leased by the local authority during the height of the pandemic to house homeless people. This would have been over a year ago and the hotel shows no signs of being cleaned in anyway since. The hotel cancelled our booking after we returned home so I can not leave a review on Booking.com. Wow just WOW!!!!

I was reluctant to give my bag over for storage as we couldn't check in (due to a previous horrible experience at the Manchester Deansgate Hilton where my make up and jewellery bag got swiped) but the girl behind the desk was reassuring and friendly, asking questions and giving us good advise on the best way to get into town and where to shop/eat. Upon returning the new man behind the desk recognised my mum instantly and had our key cards ready before we'd even reached him. Impeccable service. (This man alone deserves 5 stars as he recognised us when we were leaving as well, which always makes you feel important. I didn't catch a name but he was French [doesn't help in a hotel where they hire a lot of French people] and had more charm than you could shake a stick at, but he was never seedy, a balance that charming people don't always quite get right. Anyway, I digress.) One of the lifts was out of service, which knocked off half a star, and the room was really cold at times, taking off the other half. The room itself was lovely a good size with a great bathroom, lots of space for us to unpack and spread out. As mentioned we couldn't quite get to grips with the air con/heating system so we were a touch iced at times; maybe we were being slow or maybe their system is too complicated, you decide. The lifts speak French which threw us off completely on our first trip but was fun to imitate on other times. The surrounding area felt safe, maybe as it was the gay area and when you're two women it's nice to know that noone around you is interested, and it was an inviting and comfortable place to go back to in between our day and evening activities. Some great offers to be taken advantage of and a great experience all round.

The menu had a choice of several starters and a dozen or so main courses. Prices were comparable to pub food prices if not a little cheaper than many in the area and the menu was similar to a pub food menu with choices including steaks, gammon, pie of the day etc. etc. I do actually wonder whether the menu on this evening was comparable to most evenings though as a sample menu which was in one of the hotel leaflets that I picked up did seem to have more restaurant style dishes on it. We skipped the starter and both chose the pie which was chicken, bacon and leek. The filling was lovely but the crust was a bit on the hard side. The meals were accompanied by a small dish of new potatoes and vegetables between the two of us, we didn't have big appetites on that particular evening but if we'd been hungrier we may have felt that there wasn't enough by way of potatoes and veg. The same friendly lady served us that had served us our breakfast earlier and made us feel very welcome as everyone does at this hotel. I suppose to sum it up I'd describe it as good value food in pleasant surroundings but not really somewhere I'd choose for a special occasion.

The included breakfast had ample selection and was really good except the coffee was served in a porcelain pot so it came out just luke warm and was cooler still once it went into one's cup. What really spoiled the mood both mornings, was the selection of background sound. In a classy place you'd expect soothing music, maybe even classical piano, but it was the morning news of death, destruction, and mayhem. As we were the first in the room, we asked the desk people if it could be changed to music and both times they complied. Pop music was better than depressing news. The rooms in the annex were a little worn. I expected period furniture but it was standard Motel 6. There wasn't a sitting area. There was no table or shelf in the bathroom to put one's toiletries and no extra racks to hang towels. The TV remote needed batteries. The view from the window is over the parking lot. What saved the stay, moving it to four stars, were the attentive staff, good food served at the afternoon dinner for a large number of guests, the large room for the evening party, and the cozy dinning room that did double duty as the wedding venue. It wouldn't take too much to make this a really grand place.

We enjoyed the timeless pub-like atmosphere and the well crafted, reasonably-priced drinks while relaxing in comfortable chairs. We didn't have dinner there but it has been good in the past. I wish the bar area was a little cozier.

It was a fairly noisy evening with parties but the worst late night noise came from the pub next door where bottles were thrown into bins into the early hours and shouting from their customers kept us awake. However, this hotel has great atmosphere, a good selection of drinks and an excellent breakfast menu. Would recommend it to anyone although perhaps not those with young children.

Roomzzz have three properties in Leeds, and my parents stay at the Central location which is a short walk from town and close to the huge Opal student complexes so good for visiting parents. The rooms look a little poky on the website but are in fact fairly spacious, with plenty of room to accommodate two visitors for dinner without it being a squeeze. Altogether Roomzzz is great value for money - particularly if you actually use the kitchen facilities and cook at home!

There are three complexes dotted around the city; central, 361 and city. Aparthotels attempt to combine the idea of having your own apartment with the full service offered by a hotel, aiming to give you accomodation that can feel more personable with clean towels readily available! We stayed in the newest of the three complexes; Roomzzz Leeds City. For the price we paid (£59 internet rate) and for the fantastic accomodation we enjoyed, Roomzzz really is a perfect place to stay in the city centre. It's a fantastic concept and for those bored of satisfactory stays in chain hotels, give Roomzzz a go - there's probably more than you've got at home!
