Also I'm really impressed that this is a women run business and they give back to their community by helping girls who grow up in the markets to learn English, make money giving tours of their markets, and seek educational and economic opportunities. I booked the "Essentials" Mexico City street taco tour, but they had other street taco tours including one for after hours, one in a Mercado, and other spots around city. Our tour guide was Natalia, and she was the best! Getting to the meeting spot was a bit of a challenge due to a march going through downtown, so Natalia contacted me immediately to coordinate a different way of meeting with the group. She has a culinary background and is a food writer, so she had a wealth of knowledge about Mexican tradition and culture through the lens of food. I appreciated how mindful she was of my pork aversion. She helped provide alternatives for places that served pork so that I could try things within my dietary preferences. Pro tips: skip on breakfast and go to the tour hungry. The tour went above and beyond I expected. I knew that 6 taco stops were part of the tour, but we had a break at a pulqueria and a churreria. It's a lot of food in a 3-hour span. What's also cool about the tour was that we tried 6 different kinds of tacos. My personal favorites were the tacos from Los Provolones (1st stop), deep fried chile relleno taco from the 2nd stop, and tlacoyos from the 3rd stop. The tlacoyos were particularly unique as they were blue corn tortillas stuffed with fava beans and topped with nopales (cactus) and cheese.

Stops at best street food options among the thousands in Mexico City - especially for quality of ingredients and food safety - that highlights a solid range of traditional street foods; 2. Visits to traditional markets ranging from exclusive places where Mexico City's top chefs source their top quality ingredients (you'll get to sample exotic fruits and other items from Mexico's bounty) to places popular for their food stalls that are packed to the gills (more sampling, of course); and 3. Time spent touring a complex and intimidating neighborhood with a fantastic guide and with a small group of other food lovers. The street food tour and time spent with Club Tengo Hambre is a highlight of a visit to Mexico City. Try to schedule this tour as early as possible in your trip. I recommend this for a few reasons. I began by…read moreresearching: #1 - Could the trip be done adequately in a day? #2 - Could I drive myself or hire a driver to save money? #3 - If going with a tour company, which was the best option? Here are my findings. Yes, the trip can be done in a day. I was staying in the Condesa and we got a very early start at 6am. It took 4 hours to arrive to Tolantongo. The route becomes confusing and I would not recommend driving yourself. A reputable private driver was actually going to cost MORE than the tour offered by Nomada. Of all the tour companies, I felt most comfortable with Misha at Nomada. She was quick to respond via email and WhatsApp and answered all of my questions. There was no - paying up-front via a web site. Everything about Nomada was professional and appreciated. My expectation was that David (my driver) was going to take me to Tolantongo and that I would explore and then return to the car. I was so happy when we arrived and he was getting geared up. He took me on the most amazing tour of the falls. He knew where the "Hidden Gems" were located. Because of his experience - my day was perfect. I 100% feel that I saw EVERYTHING and could not have done it better. Quick Advice: 1) Bring Sturdy Water Shoes (if you do not have any - there are many road side vendors that sell them on your way to the falls) 2) Don't bring lots of stuff with you into the falls. You just need yourself, and a waterproof camera or water protector for phone. (Side Note - I had a faulty protector for my phone - which filled up with water - I was so bummed thinking that my phone was destroyed. I can confirm that the iPhone X is WATER PROOF) I would still recommend to have the protector so that you can put around your neck. 3) There are lots of steps and places that require physical ability. You can certainly take a relaxing trip - but you will not see the 'hidden gems'. 4) MOST IMPORTANT - make sure to visit on a weekday. I went on a Friday and it was perfect. David (my tour guide) told me how the park fills up on weekends. After a long drive - I would be super annoyed to be in nature and to have lots of people around me and then all of the traffic to come home. I hope this helps!! Viva #NomadaMexico

Xochimilco is a popular destination for tourists visiting Mexico City, even though it's a hike from the center of the city (you'll likely spend an hour getting to Xochimilco). We didn't visit on our first trip to Mexico City, but we did make a quick stop to tour the Xochimilco canals on our second visit to CDMX a few weeks ago. We visited with a tour group, which I recommend. I've heard it can be difficult to arrange things on your own. I believe it. When we visited, the market at this portion of Xochimilco had just been torn down (they are rebuilding it in time for the World Cup next summer), and it made for a confusing site. Without our guide, we definitely wouldn't have known where to go. There are lots of ways to experience and enjoy Xochimilco. For a lot of people, it's a party. You can eat, drink, and listen to mariachi music. I've heard it can be quite an experience and people can turn this into a party. You can also have a more historical- or ecological-focused experience, which is what we did (several groups focus on this kind of visit, including some that take you out at sunrise to experience it). Our tour guide taught us the history of Xochimilco (the waterways here were a main transportation venue from the pre-Hispanic period until the 20th century) and some of the ways people are trying to focus on improving the environment in the area (bringing back agriculture/chinampas and attempting to preserve habitat for the axolotl - Google it, it's amazing). If you're hoping for a particular experience, I highly recommend checking with a tour guide who can help you pick the portion of Xochimilco and ensure you get the experience you're most interested in. It's an interesting place, but given its distance from the city center, I wouldn't say it's a must visit for first time tourists to the city.

I felt privileged to experience this place, perhaps for the last time, on a peaceful Friday afternoon. We took the 2 hour round-trip tour to Isla de la Llorona, and our guide recounted a bounty of historical and environmental information as well as some fascinating legends (spoiler alert - the original Llorona was probably not actually a remorseful perpetrator of infanticide but something else entirely). Aside from the totally unique experience of having special Mariachi, food and booze boats float by, the very best thing about this spot is the utter silence. On this day, there were no other boats on our route, so when we fell silent the only sound literally was the wind rustling through the leaves of the spindly trees on the river banks. Yet we were still right within the confines of a 20M+ inhabitant city! This is what all of Tenochtitlan used to look like before folks decided to pave paradise, save for this one last, delicate corner. As a bonus, on our way to the island, we passed by and got to photograph the exact image that is displayed (along with a giant axolotl) on the back of the new $50 MXN bill. Here's hoping that future thinking leaders of Mexico will commit to restoring this special place, before it's too late - before a simple rendering on the back of a banknote is all that we have left.

Ana quickly replied to my email and was happy to set me up with a short notice tour. It was agreed my guide would meet me at my hotel at 1:30 pm. The price was $99.00 US for an afternoon local tour. Ana was fantastic, taking my flight info and telling me she could watch my flight and adjust the tour time if we ran late. Great! My guide Veronica was on time picking me up. She was paired with a car and driver. She asked me what I would like to do and what I wanted to see. I asked her to show me around the local area because it was my first visit. Veronica was super attentive and wanted to know if I prefer to walk or ride in the car, do I need water etc. She was extremely knowledgable about the area and showed me many interesting places near to my hotel. Due to Covid we were restricted from visiting Museums of the inside of most buildings but I got a wonderful overview of the area and know exactly where I would like to visit again if I return to Mexico City.
