Going into this restaurant with my boyfriend I was happy to be greeted by a friendly but professional waiter. I was really impressed with the prices which I thought were extremely cheap (However, upon looking at the menu online before writing this review to make sure that I get everything right, I realise that the meat dishes are actually not that cheap - not expensive, just not cheap). I had a vegetarian tagine and we shared various mezze. The service throughout was excellent. It was attentive but also not too pushy or intrusive. The ambience of the whole place is brilliant and it's one of the places that I always recommend to people now. It's a little away from the normal place that people go to eat (more towards town) but it's worth the small walk. read more

This is a great restaurant with consistently good Moroccan and Lebanese food, served up in a relaxed atmosphere by very friendly staff. The lamb kibbeh for starter comes highly recommended, as does the Tagine Bil Aubergine for main. All the tagines are crammed with flavour and are very filling, served with khobez (flatbread), and cous cous or rice. They also have mezze, seafood, grilled meat, and vegetarian specialities. For dessert you can, of course, get some baklawa (layered filo pastry soaked in syrup with pistachios) or Ataif (mini filled pancakes) - or if you're not into nuts you could have mango ice cream. I've been there a few times and would say it's a good choice for a group meal because they offer a good range of dishes on their menu, and even cater for some special dietary requirements. The belly dancing entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays is fun, too, and adds to the Middle Eastern atmosphere. For a quieter night out as a couple, I'd recommend going on a week night. read more

Mezza Luna is a great little Moroccan and Lebanese restaurant on the City Road. Offering something a little bit different is always a good idea on the kebab mile, and that's what Mezza Luna has achieved in spades! Or perhaps I'm biased? It's just that I love anything that is cooked in a Tajine! I actually stayed in Morocco for a couple of months in the winter of 2005, (or there abouts), and ultimately mastered the art of Tajine cooking... but it wasn't easy! I can now make a couple of dishes consummately, but my homemade food is still not a patch on these practised masters! As well as Moroccan dishes from the Tajine, there are a whole host of other items on their really comprehensive menu. As the name would suggest there's a selection of Mezza, which is essentially the equivalent of Tapas, and offers a really good way of sampling the food if you are not too familiar with many of the dishes on the menu. I doubly recommend it if you are in a group, as you can order a good assortment of Mezza and nothing will be wasted. There's also a good selection of dishes from the charcoal grill, including meats and vegetarian options. Mezza Luna offers a good all round vegetarian selection instead of the obligatory standard options that other restaurants try and get away with. To top it all, this is a really friendly restaurant with great service. I highly recommend it. read more

Coming with some side salad garnish, the calamari was super soft and went great with their saffron aioli (btw, I can't fault their saffron aioli either. Was really addictive!). -- Rosemary Potatoes -- £2.95 The potatoes are cut into small-ish chunks so they're not huge roasties but the fact that they were cut that size made them absorb so much flavour. Perfectly cooked and, you guessed it... I also dipped them in that saffron aioli. -- Hummus Beiruty -- £4.50 I'm a huge fan of hummus and Mezza Luna's version is divine. They had regular hummus, but I ordered the one with a bit of red pepper cause I enjoy a bit of a kick. The bread that came with it was perfect; sift, soft, but still with a little bit of bite. And despite being quite cheap in comparison to other deliveries and restaurant, you will get twice as much food ! This is possibly my favourite restaurant in Cardiff. The food is superb as is the service. I have always been slightly picky about middle-Eastern restaurants as my family are both Moroccan and Lebanese but the food here is just as I've always known it from home and abroad delicious! I was in Cardiff on a business trip a few months ago and was tired of eating in the city centre, so a coworker and I decided to venture out a little bit. We ended up going to Mezza Luna because it had received such good reviews. We were impressed all around. The food was fantastic, but the service was even better. The owner personally came out to our table to talk to us and to make sure we were enjoying our experience. If I ever go back to Cardiff on business, this will be a place I make sure to go again. I am not a big fan of eating out since I am a keen cook, (and my partner claims a bit fussy), but we've eaten at Mezza Luna several times and have been mostly delighted with the food and service. It is Lebanese so you get a delicious array of dishes on offer, including lots for Vegetarians and I'd say it is pretty healthy too. Never eaten there at lunchtime (since I don't get a lunch break!) but one of our staff does and apparently there's a good lunchtime deal for around five pounds. The dinner prices are not expensive though, and you can get a good main course for around ten pounds with starters at three or four pounds per person. Also, they do offers (we ate there recently on a buy-one-main, get one free) and they honour their offers without any fuss or nonsense. A few times we have been at the weekend and it's great, because they have a belly dancer which is awesome to watch! Certainly something different. The décor of the place is also nice, its got a big oven and you can see into their kitchen which is reassuring and also adds to the atmosphere. It is clean and neat, and so are the loos! Mezza Luna is on City Road, towards the top end (closer to Albany Road) and this makes it convenient for taxis and public transport if you intend sampling some of their awesome beer (they served us both Lebanese and Moroccan beer, which we hadn't tried before and they are a must-have). The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful too. Well worth a visit. read more

This was the first restaurant that my partner took me to when we met, so I may be a little biased, but I do really love Mezza Luna. We've been eating at this restaurant for nearly two years now and the food is consistently very good, in fact it has even improved recently, which we didn't think would be possible as it really is so good. Very tasty starters I recommend Kibbeh, Jawanih Dajaj or Calamari but if you're going with friends the sharing plates are really good, especially if they've never had Lebanese/Moroccan food before. For main courses you'll also be spoilt for choice as all the dishes are of a very high standard. The tagines are my favourite items on the menu, especially the Lamb Shank and Tagine Bil Aubergine. Both are excellent, packed full of flavour and generously portioned, especially the lamb shank which is so beautifully cooked the lamb just falls of the bone and melts like butter in your mouth. I usually go for the Tagine Bil Aubergine if I want something a little lighter, the lamb is equally good in this dish but more manageable for a smaller stomach. The tagines are served with Khobez (freshly cooked traditional flatbread), couscous or rice, so there is plenty of choice but I really wish they came with the choice of the rosemary potatoes which are so tasty that I sometimes feel like ordering them on their own and eating a whole plate full. The atmosphere is great too, always warm and cosy from the oven, which is situated at the end of the restaurant so you can watch the chefs prepare your food. Is great for a romantic meal but also for parties for which a Belly Dancer is provided for entertainment, they also have belly dancers in on a Friday and Saturday and it is a lot of fun to watch as you are encouraged to join in if you want. There is a range of good drinks available too and enough for those who don't drink alcohol, my favourite is the Citrus Lemonade but all of the blended juices are lovely and prepared fresh for you by the waitresses. The staff are great in Mezza Luna, always really helpful and good at suggesting dishes if you're new to this type of cuisine. They are really hard working but always friendly, even when rushed off their feet. The restaurant can get busy on the weekend but is just as good to eat in the weekday when it is a little quieter, which I sometimes prefer. The food is really good value for money and they quite often offer deals if you join their mailing list or are a member of Mezza Luna's Facebook page, which makes the restaurant even more affordable. All in all a great place to eat, highly recommend it. read more

Mezza Luna seems definitely worth visiting on a pre-booked weekend sitting with belly dancers and music galore to entertain you whilst you eat, but any other time will depend on the mood of the staff. I took a family member for the recently launched lunchtime sitting with a Groupon voucher and we could not decide how we felt about the overall Mezza Luna experience. The newly acquired and clingy waiter had no knowledge of Arabic food or culture, which diluted the reportedly magical experience. The chef in the open-plan kitchen looked enthusiastic and could certainly cook authentic Arabic food to an extent. I suppose the evening kitchen staff are actually Arabic and cook like the chefs of the Djema-el-Fna in Marrakech. The hygiene has been put into question by authorities and we had a few tummy rumbles the day after. As a frequent traveller to countries in North Africa and the Middle East, the flavour of the food was similar to the real Arabic experience. My advice is to certainly go, pre-booked, on a Friday or Saturday night. read more

Our first meal in Mezza Luna, probably early 2010, was quite good though less spectacular than some friends, who had strongly recommended it, had suggested. But it was good enough to return, which we did last week, arriving for an early meal at 630. I'm not sure if the waitress lost interest once I had declined drinks before my meal, but despite being very few people in the restaurant at that stage and several staff member available, we were ignored for a considerable period when I tried to ask a question about the menu. The service continued to be less than wonderful. But it's the food you go for. Hors d'oeuvres - a mixed Mezze plus a separate dish of extra falafel were quite good though two falafel balls hardly constitutes a starter or justifies a price tag of £4-50 (and they were lukewarm rather than hot). My partner and I had quite different lamb-based main courses: she a grilled lamb meshwi and I a Lamb shank tagine. After a mouthful or two we both commented that our meals were far too salty. And I'm someone who gets told I put too much salt in my own food. One of my root vegetable pieces could not be cut, much less eaten, presumably undercooked. I think the basic dishes were nice and both had plenty of meat, but were spoilt by the over-seasoning. When my partner told the waitress that she found the dish too salty, this only elicited 'I'll tell them' and no further response was forthcoming. As we left, we looked at each other and said we wouldn't be returning. Perhaps the standard is declining since the positive reviews and recommendations in 2009. read more

Me and my girlfriend tried to go to our regular eating place 'Puccini' on Albany Rd. it was too busy and the staff took our coats and made a fuss of us by offering complimentary coffee whilst we waited, we were told there would be a 45 minute wait and suggested we try Mezza Luna restaurant on City Road so we went and had a look. It was a thursday evening and when we walked in the restaurant was very busy and had a vibrant atmosphere. The staff were great and made us feel like we had known them for years. We tried a couple of tapas sujuk meat with baked halloumi, Sawda dejaj (chicken livers with peppers, onion in its own creamy sauce) and felafel with salad and tahini dressing). The main was equally as authentic, Salmon Tagine was cooked in a mild spiced tomato sauce and tasted out of this world. My wife being a vegetarian, had moussakaat tagine, I didn't try it but apparently was equally amazing. will definitely go back with a crowd to watch the belly dancer on a weekend. read more

I have visited this restaurant on a number of occasions with both family and friends and i must say i have always been very impressed with the friendly and lively atmoshphere, excellent service and fantastic middle eastern cuisine on offer. The restaurant has good decor and furnishings and the open kitchen area at the back means you can actually see your food is freshly prepared and cooked for you. One of the highlights of the restaurant and what makes it stand out from the crowd is the regular belly dancer - she makes sure of audience interaction and is always entertaining. All in all mezzaluna is great place to enjoy a nice meal with family or a good starting point for a lively and fun filled night out with friends. read more
