And then you have the ones who love durian and believe the aroma is actually fragrant and can tantalize your taste buds. For 33 years of my life I was on the side of the former, the ones who would agree with folks like Andrew Zimmern and describe durian as rotten mushy onions. Haha I know I know...But hey it takes a lot of courage to try new things and see things in a new light, especially when you were convinced there was only one truth your entire life. Since that mind blowing revelation, I've been on a journey to order everything and anything durian. Hence my visit to Mía & More today. I was definitely here for the "More" and not the mía (although the mía is bomb if that is what you're craving but I was definitely on the hunt for durian). I was delighted to see a few options on the menu so of course I ended up ordering everything that had durian: - Sinh tố sầu riêng which is your durian smoothie. I inhaled this during my car ride home. It was creamy, and almost airy custard like. - Chè thái sầu riêng which comes with longan, lychee, jelly, coconut milk & durian. You can ask for the ice to be put on the side if you're not going to eat it until later. The crushed ice is a must! I ate this in lieu of dinner. No regrets here. - Đâu hũ sầu riêng which is your sweet tofu with durian. They do say too much durian is not good for you in one sitting. So I'm saving this one for tomorrow. Okay place was durian central!!! So yes the smell was real! Get in line order your drink they call out your number and pick up! But super quick and easy to order. Got the traditional, durian, and the mung bean with coconut milk! My favorite is just watching the machine grind out the sugarcane stalks. After one of our meals, I had a hankering for something sweet so we chanced upon Mia & More that was nearby. I decided to go for their dragon fruit strawberry cane drink while my friend got their durian slush. The dragon fruit strawberry cane drink was pretty good! Refreshing and fruity but I think the durian slush was the star of the show! We love durian and their durian slush tasted like pure durian! Definitely recommend this if you like durian! I really come here for the avocado shakes. Their sugar cane drinks are good but it's like many other places. They have a good seating area to seat and enjoy your drinks. It was very refreshing but after sipping it for just a few minutes, it was gone. You can then see the amount of ice that was in the cup which was 70% of the drink. I didn't mind paying $7 for the drink but after seeing how much ice it had, it was not worth it. You can adjust the ice level with additional cost of $1-2. Having been to the Mia & More in Falls Church, VA, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they have one in Houston as well. This space is very large, with the kitchen and the check-out counter only taking a relatively small footprint. There are clean bathrooms. This leaves a lot of space for sitting, although instead of investing in tables so guests can hang out, the owners opted for very few tables and couches. This creates a lounge feel and forces you potentially sit next to strangers. There's a case to be made for that, but it also makes it difficult to have a discussion among two people. Because of the way the space is set up, sound carries and it can get very loud, even when the place is not that crowded. However, if your goal is to get some good sugar cane juice and not to find a place to sit and work or have a date, Mia & More is definitely worth going to. It is a welcomed alternative to all the boba tea spots popping up. The sugar cane juice is on point. I would recommend getting the sugarcane and kumquat (nước mía tắc). The sugarcane craze is in full swing in Houston. A few years back sugar cane juice was hard to find now there are multiple stores pumping it out in. High volumes. This is one of the newest contenders and they are doing a solid job. They have the coconut/sugar cane version and the kumquat and sugar cane version which are both delicious. My only complaint with these sugarcane places is the amount of ice. But I get it, ingredients are expensive.
