Love and honor to Miami, forever and a day! I loved my four years as an undergraduate at Miami of Ohio and would recommend it enthusiastically to interested students. Yes, Miami University. Not the University of Miami. Miami was a university (1809) when Florida belonged to Spain (until 1822)! Why is it named Miami? Because of the Miami Indians. Other nicknames: Ohio's Public Ivy, because Miami delivers an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price. J.Crew U, because many students care about looking clean-cut, professional, polished, and yes, preppy. Miami is located in Oxford, which is a quintessential college town. There are about 16,000 undergraduates on campus. Miami has the best aspects of a big state school (awesome sports teams, beautiful campus facilities, opportunities for undergraduates to do research with professors, killer Greek life) with the best aspects of a small liberal arts college (professors who are excellent teachers, well-designed living learning communities in the dorms, and lots of opportunities for service learning). I'm a nerd, so I took advantage of everything academic: the University Honors Program, the Scholar Leader Community, the Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program. I was a member of the Dean's Student Advisory Council, a recipient of the President's Distinguished Service Award, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa my junior year. I also worked three campus jobs: language computer lab monitor, research desk staffer at King Library, and campus tour guide. I had a lot of fun and made lasting friendships. And my education didn't cost that much, thanks to scholarships and my parents' generosity. Tuition and fees are currently $14,000 a year for Ohio residents. Sure, Miami is more expensive than OSU ($10K) and OU ($11K). But I think the cost is well worth the education and the experience. Over half of the student body comes from states other than Ohio, so lots of other students and parents must feel the same way. I love returning to campus to visit. It looked great while I was a student there from 2004 to 2008, but damn, the new buildings look amazing! But the best part of having attended Miami is the positive association fellow Ohioans and those in the know have with the university. Miami is a university to be proud of. read more

"Prodesse Quam Conspici" Mother Miami, the home of my undergraduate experience. A 'public Ivy' with a very private feel considering the setting, curriculum and class size. I was sold upon my first visit to Oxford, a beautiful college town straight out of a novel. A bit isolated in the rolling hills (not corn fields) of Southwest Ohio, about 40 minutes north Cincy. I loved everything about it, but see why some get overwhelmed with the social anxiety that comes along with a intense Greek scene. GDI was the way to go... had the time of my life and wouldn't change a thing. Most people who don't like the social climate transfer to become nothing but a number at a Big 10, with the benefits of only slightly better college football. I had a great experience in and out of class. Studying zoology and dabbled in finance - the intersection of the two is where I am today, so it all work out very well. Not too mentions that I was also able to partake in such challenging courses as 'Love and Sex', 'Viticulture and Enology' and 'Social & Ballroom Dance'. Bagel and Deli, Jimmy Johns, La Bamba, CJs, Mac and Joes, Circle Bar were my source of food and drink. B&D will probably never close, along with CJs and Mac and Joes, as they are all classics and hopefully part of the Miami's charm that won't get over run by new money, new construction, overzealous real estate developers looking to make a buck on upper middle class kids, etc. Highly recommended for Ohioans and imports alike. read more

What can you really say about a University? Every school comes with some good and some bad attributes. Before I chose to attend Miami University, I knew that. I knew that no college would be perfect. So I chose Miami University because during my campus visit, it just felt like home. I could picture myself attending classes in the brick buildings, lounging on the grass of the quad, eating in the dining halls and stopping to say hi to friends as we crossed paths. So I told the other schools I was accepted to "Thanks but no thanks!" Even the things about Miami that some might consider bad or undesirable, I grew to love and my years spent here remain a sweet memory that I wouldn't trade for the world. Location: At first glance, it seems like you are in the middle of nowhere and I suppose geographically you would be correct. However, living here you realize that not only are you a short drive to the bustling metropolis of Cincinnati but you are also part of a large community. You never FEEL like you are in the middle of nowhere until you drive more than a mile from the center of Oxford. Classes: Going to class sucks. That's just how life is. No one likes to take a break from their social life or nap schedule to attend class. I am a natural learner and a curious person but even I grow tired of a monotonous schedule. If you are smart, you will pepper your schedule with a few fun classes. During my time here I took plenty of boring classes such as: Geography of U.S. National Parks (sounded interesting, not so much) Calculus (never sounded interesting, never was) C++ Programming with Certification American Literature of pre-1800's (required by my second major) Sociology (for the Social Worker.. it filled a requirement) But I also took some very interesting classes: Human Diseases (it's good to know how our bodies work) Diversity in Film (the professor was great) every Creative Writing class I took Accounting (once you figure it out) Marketing (great way to understand how to sell anything to anyone) Kickboxing Theater 101 & 102 Ice Skating for Beginners (can you do a hockey stop at full speed?) Social Life: No one else from my high school had attended Miami in years so I started out completely alone. You truly will make friends for life while attending. I don't care if you are the preppy sorority type, the athletic type, the goth type or whatever. You will find a group of like-minded people. I get together several times a year with friends I made while attending Miami. We are still best friends and I think the way Miami students live has a large part to do with that (see Living section). There is a steady stream of activities to keep you busy when you don't want to study or go to class. Bars, restaurants, theater productions, quad picnics and sporting events just to name a few. Don't assume that just because Miami is considered by many to be the Mother of Greek that you have to join a fraternity/sorority to have fun. I never joined one but still attended countless frat parties and was even adopted by one frat as an honorary sister. I played a sport (rugby) and ended up with more things to do socially than I could handle. Clubs also run rampant at Miami. If you have an interest, you can be certain that there is a club to suit your needs. Improv comedy, theater, medieval re-enactment, community service, golf, bible study, and the list goes on. Living: Awww, college life. Nothing says, "look ma, no hands" like living off-campus in Oxford. After the first year of college students are no longer forced to live in dorms. Many second year students still choose to live in dorms, but very few third/fourth/fifth/sixth year students do so. Most upperclassmen choose to reside in off-campus housing. The most coveted way to live off-campus is in a big house with 4 or 5 of your best friends. These large rental houses are everywhere in Oxford and competition to secure one in a good location is fierce. If you want to live in a house right next to campus or right next to the bars, you can expect to spend $3000+ per bedroom, per semester (yes houses are generally rented on a per semester basis with most students signing a 2 semester lease). If you don't feel like spending that much and are OK with being a little further from the action (like 5 or 6 blocks.... that's far in Oxford) then you can score a house for $1800 - $2000 per bedroom, per semester. My final year (fifth year) I lived in a house with 9 friends. It was a 9 bedroom, 4 bathroom, 3 kitchen house with a very large basement and large private backyard. It was 2 blocks from the bars and cost each of us $2100 per semester. That means the rental company bagged $21,000 per semester which is approximately $7000/mo of actual occupancy. But that's Oxford for ya. Another option is to live in one of the many apartment complexes on the outskirts of Oxford. You may not be as close to the action but you CAN still walk everywhere. First of all.... youthful, starry eyed soon to be high school grad: I commend you young lad or lady, that you care enough about your college education that you decided to check Yelp reviews to make your decision. Toss out that old 2015 US News and world report (that says Miami is 1st among public universities for its strong commitment to undergraduate teaching) and heed the advice of the mighty Yelp! What to say about Miami? Well I wont quote Robert Frost, or talk about what roads may or may not lead to Oxford... But I'll just relate my thoughts about MU with a simple illustration: alumni and Miami folk often throw around the whole "Love and Honor" phrase when it comes to Miami. It's our alma mater. It sounds nice. It's the hashtag we use when we want to get retweeted by the official Miami UniversityTwitter account... But why? What does it mean? 'Love'? That's easy. Sure. I love/loved Miami Univeristy. I'm not going to get into what all we alumni may or may not love about Miami, or what my personal experience was.... you're just going to have to make that your own bubsy... But honor? That's where the rubber hits the road here. As alumni... we honor and are honored by Miami. I am honored to say this is my alma mater... I'm honored that I got to walk the halls of Hall and learn about Laffer curves, ISLM and SQL... I'm honored to say that this is where I met my wife... and I in turn honor Miami by talking it up whenever i can, sharing stories whenever I can, giving back whenever i can. My alma mater was so fantastic that I managed to squeeze out five years when four would do just fine. I didn't want to leave. I agree with Todd J in that the social climate can be a little intense for those that didn't grow up with J. Crew and BMWs. It was for me at first. I would also say that Miami is one of the least diverse places on this entire planet. If ever there was a place where everyone looked like a rubber stamp, Miami it is. However, there really is no place like it on earth...at least not that I've been to. The campus is smack in the middle of the sprawling hills of the Miami Valley in Southwest Ohio. It truly is in the middle of nowhere, but while some may find this to be a negative with a college, I found that this isolation is part of what gives Miamians the close knit community that they have. Oxford is a completely self sufficient town, so there really is no reason to leave anyways. There are always different events to attend on and off campus. While the sports aren't the caliber of the Big 10, we certainly have a good time at the games and our hockey team is always among the best in the nation. Odds are you'll make sportscenter at least once in your career while rushing the field/court after upsetting some big time program. I had no intention of going Greek when I arrived, but after going through the recruitment process, I found a group of guys that were welcoming and friendly and their house was a place that felt like home, and still does. As far as the important stuff, the academics, Miami is very reputable and the class sizes are perfect. They aren't so big that you become a statistic, but they aren't too small either. The fact that so many Miamians migrate to Chicago after they finish, and the closeness of the community, will also mean that Miami will benefit you if you're looking for a job in the big city in almost any field. We tend to take care of our own in a way that not all schools do. Clearly, I love Mother Miami and I miss her greatly. I could go on and on, but I feel I already have. read more

"All roads don't lead to Oxford. To get here, you have to want to be here, but once you're here, you never want to leave." Oh how true this is. My senior year of high school, I remember I used to cry whenever my parents even mentioned the thought of me attending Miami. I wanted to go to UCLA or OSU. But let's think about it, UCLA is ridiculously overpriced for out of staters and even though I'm a diehard Buckeye fan, ALL my friends went to OSU. Sooo...I eventually changed my mind last minute and it was probably one of the best decisions of my life! Sure, I hated it my first semester. Diversity is really important to me and this doesn't just mean ethnically. I mean come on, what can you expect from a school dubbed J.Crew U? But like Ghandi said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." and he never could have spoken truer words. I made it a point to make friends and join campus organizations and bam! I loved every single moment of my college career afterwards. Miami offered me the opportunities within the business school, multi-cultural organizations and Greek life that I probably could not have had anywhere else. I learned how to be a true leader and guess what? I'm friends with my professors. What more could you ask for? When the business school sent out a survey before we graduated asking if we could choose again, would we choose Miami? Without hesitation, I chose YES. Okay. I am giving this school 5 stars, although I did not attend, because people who went here loved it. I chose not to attend because after attending an academically intense and overly structured high school I sort of wanted to take it easy. I thought Miami was a little too rigid for me (people would "dress" for class). Image and cliques seem to matter here. But, they just do to some people. If you are the sort of person that gets annoyed by that, it isn't the school for you. However, if you don't even notice cliques, then you will love it. My grandma went here. Beautiful campus, quaint town. My son chose this public ivy from ten schools he visited/applied to, attended a summer orientation session and then at the very last minute was accepted at Wake Forest off the wait list. Since he's a southern boy at heart and Wake was his first choice, he went there instead. We we toured the Miami campus, I found the facilities top notch and everything pristine. I really thought Oxford had great appeal, too. With its awesome reputation, I understand why many kids seek admission to Miami. read more

I had a recent need to excavate the past, retrieve my transcript and verify my degree. That service has been out-sourced by most institutions, so I was doubly concerned when neither the records' contractor nor Miami Univ could locate me in their systems. I thought about the reaction my mother would have, since she paid Miami Univ for that period of my raw youth. Enter Mrs.Karen Hannon at the MU Registrar. HUGE kudos for her perseverence and knowledge of the MU administration. She found my dusty degree when several techs and two contractor reps could not. Turns out I am filed under my married name - a name that I assumed a full three years after graduating from MU. Go figure. Glad Mrs.Hannon did. read more

I can't say enough great things about Miami University... But I will say that it has the Ivy League feel and appeal in a small, hospitable community. We love the student homes and their smart names emblazoned upon them. The atmosphere of Oxford, Ohio is one that makes writers and directors feel comfortable with their projects. Ask George Clooney! Would not trade my college experience here for anything else. I have gotten internships for campaigns and think tanks and the opportunity to work for professors and it is purely the benefit of going to a school where the professors actually care about you. In terms of academics, it is very hard to get better than here. Small class sizes generally and professors who genuinely care about you on an individual level. I have professors who have written me ~7 letters of recommendation and as I am writing this I am halfway through my junior year. I am in the BA-MA program for political science, meaning that I can graduate in 4 years with my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. The alumnae at Miami are incredibly loyal and the statistics on getting a job or getting into graduate school are heavily in your favor just because of Miami being on your diploma. In addition to that, the social life here is very active with a prominent Greek life and hundreds of clubs and programming events hosted by the university. Athletics aren't as significant here, but hockey is definitely a big deal. On top of all of that, it is repeatedly awarded one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States, and for good reason!! Definitely a school worth considering. read more

Absolutely beautiful campus in every season!! Pros-excellent academic reputation, great class sizes, good social scene, and wonderful professors. I attended all 3 campuses and all of them are wonderful!!! everything is so close and it feels like a tight knit community in Oxford, which I love. Our special Holiday of Green Beer Day (Thursday before Spring break) is so much fun! There are buses that run all over campus and even to Walmart and Kroger so you can park and ride. So many different clubs/organizations to be a part of, you will definitely make friends and enjoy your time at Miami :) now the cons- no parking on campus, except for maybe 20 meters. LOTS OF PARKING TICKETS ----- they mean business LOL. The food quality in dining halls have gone down tremendously (assuming to save money). I used my meal card my freshman year, then always bought my own food from Kroger. Overall I enjoyed my stay at Miami and although I am ready to graduate and put my big girl panties on, I am not ready to leave this life I have fell in love with. -might consider being a professional student ;) read more

Miami as a college gets 5 stars, I wouldn't have gone anywhere else and I'm proud to be an alumni. However like most colleges I've worked with / heard stories about the administration is terrible. The campus is amazing. One of the best looking schools in the country. The town of Oxford is boring but its super safe and has a few good places to eat at. I love coming up here on a Fall day to catch a sporting event and get away from Cincinnati for a bit. Miami students are good looking but hardly friendly. Miami is known as the preppy college in the area. I am come from a super rich family but I am still nice to everyone. Miami students need to learn some hospitality which is why I like visiting SEC schools more the women are way more friendly. I think its just a Miami culture thing but other than that the school is amazing in every way. read more
