As a full time independent artist, I used to love this Michaels. Now it's a really frustrating experience. Why have self checkout if customers can't use them? You design your store to have a row of self checkouts, then make customers wait in long lines while an employee checks each person out one by one. I will be avoiding this store from now on. Nobody has an idea of what's happening in the store, they don't know the prices of the items here, they except you to scan your own items now, and when you ask someone they seem like it's not their job, the prices are way too expensive a model should not be forty dollars, how is someone supposed to get into a hobby with these prices here, go to hobby lobby instead. read more

This review is strictly for Michaels custom framing service. I brought in a large poster I bought on a trip that I wanted framed. The person at the frame counter was very helpful. He explained the different frame and glass options and answered all my questions. He gave me specific recommendations for framing something on the larger side which I appreciated. The custom framing took about a week and they did a wonderful job. Very professional. The price was reasonable. I would use their custom framing service again. While I was at the store I found out this Michaels is a UPS dropoff location, which I took advantage of when I pick up my frame. read more

I usually go to the Michael's in Porter Sq but I needed other stores in this plaza as well, and the few times I've been to this one I've NEVER HAD ISSUES..BUT LAST NIGHT WAS IT!! I was WITH MY BABY and I only needed a couple things for her bday party. I'm walking around looking for said things and I ask one staff member for something and he tells me where it is...I put it ON my stroller and proceeded to the 2nd item..Couldn't find it so I ask another employee who was fooling around with a couple other employees instead of working and she tells me. I go to said area and find what I'm looking for but I put it back. I then start heading up to the front TO PAY for my things and then remember I needed yarn (LOCATED IN THE FAR BACK OF THE STORE). So I go and I'm looking for what I need-didn't really find it but picked up something similar. THEN as I'm walking back TO THE FRONT TO PAY FOR MY BABY's T-SHIRT & 2 ROLLS OF YARN some random guy (assuming he was a "manager") came outta NOWHERE lookin' like a dude 4rm a scary movie asking me if I need help..with MUCH ATTITUDE!! SO W/MUCH ATTITUDE I said "no I'm good" And continued to walk to the front 2 PAY!!!! As soon as I say I'm good he says "just call the cops" into his walkie talkie...FOOOR WHAT?? Like the Target in Everett, this Michael's wins due to its sheer size and the amount of available product that comes as a result. While I certainly prefer being able to walk everywhere, and appreciate I can walk to the Porter Square location, it just doesn't compare with the product offering in Everett. A perfect example is when I was looking for poster frames and couldn't find a size I needed, although it existed within the line that Michael's carries. The Porter Square location didn't carry it at all, so I ordered on Amazon. However, checking out the Everett location, I noticed several on hand. Another bonus of Michael's in general is that they always seem to have crazy sales, often 50% or greater off different sections in the store. So if you something and it's not on sale, check back a week later and you may be in luck (especially if it's seasonal). read more

The last time we visited this store we were looking for decorations for an upcoming baby shower and I have to say that this shop had what we needed, but the experience was lukewarm. The store was well stocked but incredibly disorganized in many aisles. The staff wasn't very receptive to questions, but the cashier was very polite. In the end, we found what we needed but we have definetly had better experiences at other stores. We would totally come back in the future but only when in dire straights. If we can we like to go to others in the area or closer to our home in Western MA. read more

A Craftily Erotic Tale -- I was going to write a sexually-charged review about how awesome Michaels is* but as it turns out, my parents now read my reviews (Hi Mom, Dad!). Then I decided that in order to spare their poor hearts, I will henceforth change all references to sexual activity in my originally intended review to references to crafting while using materials I obtained from Michaels. Instead of kissing, for instance, we might paint a canvas or I might make a plaster cast of his face. Correspondingly, because I think the gentleman in question probably would not appreciate me kissing and telling, I will change all references to him to that of Martha Stewart, (in)famous domestic and crafty goddess. * No, actually, I wasn't until I figured out they might see it.** ** Behind the cute façade, I am actually quite a pain in the ass. -- Martha and I had spent a pleasant evening out on the town. She walked me back to my apartment, and there on the doorstep, we started to mix a cake. "Would you like to come up and bake this in my oven...?" I breathed into her ear with a throaty laugh. We stumbled upstairs together - I barely remembered to lock the doors behind us - and then we began painting. We started with those paint-by-number velvet posters that I haven't seen since I was ten years old, but then moved onto increasingly bigger and bigger sheets of watercolor paper. Finally we switched over to canvas, hitting the taut fabric with the loud, wet slaps of paintbrushes heavy with gesso and acrylics. When that became too much for me to bear, we scaled back to sculpting with some modeling clay. The thing about Martha Stewart is that she knows what she is doing. Whereas I maybe dabbled in crafting from time to time, this maven could single-handedly make a delicious Thanksgiving dinner from scratch all while crafting adorable table decorations and individual place settings for her guests. She knew she had the advantage over my crafting experience and made jokes about teaching me everything she knew. I certainly was ready to learn. Of course, I was eager to show off what I already knew, making candy from scratch in different novelty molds and creating a tasteful flower arrangement, but Martha quickly took over and made me the most beautiful flower arrangement I'd ever seen. Three times! After a brief interlude of knitting in the hallway, we moved into my bedroom upstairs, beading jewelry and forming plaster casts of each other's limbs while tossing everything on my bed into a total disarray. Finally, in the heat of the moment, we began to scrapbook. I haven't done much scrapbooking in the past, but Martha confidently took the lead, and I discovered all sorts of new things about stickers and papers and adhesive that night. She then made me another flower arrangement, and by that time, we were both plenty tired. She left the next morning, but not before she crafted me a few doorknob handle decorations and a candle place setting for my next dinner party. "Was this as good for you as it was for me?" I asked over another bowl of cake batter, and she responded by stripping, staining, and re-varnishing all of my bedroom furniture with a tasteful blue hue. It was perhaps the best crafting experience I'd ever had, marred only by the fact that the bitch never called again. read more

I had promised neon colored cupcakes for my cousin's girl's night and for some reason had the most trouble finding neon food coloring. while about to have a meltdown in Target because the standard food color colors just won't suffice, I crawled to Michael's and BOOM! One box have electric pink, green, purple and blue. The other box- black( how cool) teal, sapphire and gold! I have officially given up on this store. From the poor yarn/needle/crochet hook selection, to the framing job that took three times the time they said it would, to the customer fight in the line which started only because the manager on duty was an idiot, I've had it. I went to A.C. Moore in Somerville recently and had a much happier experience without the long wait in line I usually get at Michael's. How the fight started: The 10 to 12 customers waiting for one of two registers had lined themselves up so that the first person in line would get to the first available register. I was third in line with at least 10 people behind me when another register, much further away than the two open ones, opened. A customer who had not stood in line went to that register. The woman in front of me let that customer know that we were all in line. The customer sheepishly started to go to the end of our line when the "manager on duty" (who was at a register) said that we could all just line up at registers, we didn't all have to stand in one line!!! Argh!!!! Chaos followed of course. Why not tell the newly opened register cashier to say, "I'll help the next person in line." Why not have such a line system to begin with? As for the yarn, it's poorly stocked, poorly displayed and poorly managed. Just ONE example: When I went back two days later for a second skein of a particular yarn, I didn't find it in the place I originally found it. I searched for a person to help me. She told me if it wasn't out there, they didn't have any. She did accompany me to the display. She too looked for it in vain. I left. The NEXT day, I happened to walk past the back wall where I noticed multiple skeins of the yarn I wanted. Multiple. Skeins. Of. The. Yarn. Don't go. read more

I used to love Michael's but their new rules have really started to make me mad! They still take their coupons and competitor's coupons but they no longer take internet coupons, not even their own! What are you suppose to do when you do not live in their mailing area? It's not fair that I can't get ahold of a coupon that I would use while others just throw them out. I'd been all around town looking for a big, white frame for a poster. Target, BBB, Corners (the f*cking frame store!) and NOTHING! I went into Michaels for something else, thinking "there's a chance they could have a frame" and BOOM they not only have frames in every big-ass size I could want, they were having a 40% off sale on them! SQUEE!!! Whatever it was I was looking for in the first place was kind of a let down, but lets call it even for the frames and the sale. So my review is written purely on excitement of finding three giant frames for three giant piece of art, in three different colors. Huzzah! The staff and selection at this Michaels are on par with the staff and selection at nearby AC Moore. Which is to say, you're extremely lucky to find someone who knows anything about anything other than scrap-booking (the new national past-time) or kids crafts; and the selection is broad, you can find almost just about anything you want at either of these stores for a reasonable price. I'd highly recommend Michaels for frames. I couldn't be more pleased with my finds, and the selection. read more

I gotta say that I am drawn to craft stores like a moth to a flame.....Scrapbooking, cake/cupcake decorating, painting, candle making, etc... I've done it. Michael's is great because it is a one stop shop for all the crafty things you need. You can make some bath soap, make a card, and package it all up with things at Michaels. While this place has everthing I need to spend my afternoon decopauging or doing some paint by numbers I am not a super fan of this location. Whenever I ask for the location of something they dont know where it really is. Like at Halloween I could not find glow in the dark paint, so there I go and ask one of the 'friendly' employees.... where do they tell where it is... in the paint department. Now I have to ask... do you think I did not try going there first?!?!?! In additon to their lack of knowledge of general stock, it kills me that on a busy Saturday there are 2-3 registers open. I know I love spending my time waiting in line to buy some felt but there has to be a better system... like having more registers open?!?!?!? read more

In this modern age when it's ok to act 86 years old and craft and knit, Michaels is still the best place to pick up all your supplies. I've gone to Michaels with various projects in my mind relating to knitting, scrapbooking, iron on transfers, beads, recipe boxes, everything! Meh! For an Art Supply store, they don't have much of what I need for my business. Hardly any Vellum or trace paper, for instance. And their selection of colored pencils bites. This place is way more for the crafter, than a professional artist. They do have a pretty good selection of crafty stuff. And, their selection of artificial flowers is immense and depressing. Remember, I'm a Landscape Designer....I like my flowers real. I'd rather go to Playtime, any day. They actually stock a better selection of stuff for both crafters, AND artists. read more

There are never enough staff working to either help on the floor or work the registers so there are always long lines to check out - don't go when you are in a hurry! The general arts and crafts supplies - rhinestones, beads, and the like - have waned over recent years as scrap booking has taken over, so beware that such supplies may be limited. read more

Promised I would update when I picked up my custom framing. Gotta say - they did a pretty nice job. The artwork looked fantastic - the frames and mattes all worked well together. Partly that is because I have great taste ;) and partly because the employees of Michael's custom framing dept. really had great advice on the frames. I went with a different frame for each piece and they really went with each painting perfectly (while still looking great with the rest of the rooms they are hung in). One piece they couldn't frame without damaging the artwork and called to let me know and refunded my money. Which I appreciated. AND It was ready a day ahead of the initial quoted date- FTW! read more

Michael's is located in the armpit of our metro area, in that horrible Gateway Center which is home to lots and lots of big chain stores (including the infamous Target Greatland-- what makes it "Great," I have yet to discover). The truth is, Michael's has it all: ribbon, giftwrapping, fake flowers, markers, paints, scrapbooking material, anything and everything craftsy is in their enormous store, and it's all much cheaper than at Pearl, Blick, Bob Slate, etc. The problem with Michael's is that it's impossible to find anything. The store is so big, and there's so much overlap between the categories they've created (i.e. "gift wrap" and "ribbon,") that one ends up running all over the store looking for something simple. What's worse, the staff doesn't seem to know where anything is either. All in all, Michael's is worth it. Just don't expect to be in and out of the place in under 30 minutes. read more

I usually tag along with my cousin when she comes here, cause she actually does do crafty things... I still end up walking out of here with a whole bunch of crap anyways. I helped her learn to knit this past winter cause there were all kinds of really cheap yarns there. We also made our own ornaments for the xmas tree, which was not only messy but fun. The have an amazing assortment of stuff I wouldn't EVER need, but it was a good place to come to wrap gifts (all year round) and to get the 300 kinds of adhesive that you need to keep around in the house for whatever might break or stop sticking, that kind of emergency. I have a love/hate with Michael's. Well, mostly love. I can get pretty much everything here. I needed candy melts for cake balls made for a co-worker's baby shower? They've got 'em. Need crazy scrapbooking supplies? Check. Plenty of fake flowers and crafty bits. I do wish they had a few more sewing notions - most of their needle arts section is devoted to knitting and crocheting. Understandable, but I still with I could pick up stuff here instead of having to go all the way out to Joann's! My biggest pet peeve - custom framing. There are usually good deals going (60% off custom framing, awesome!!) - except they are pretty pricey so that's not much of a deal if you have a big piece! My husband and I want to get our guest book (we used a decorative register as he is English) from our wedding framed and we just can't rustle up the almost $250 they want for it - even with the steep discount. read more

I don't understand the love for Big Box craft stores when we live in a city with much better options. I guess it's okay for scrap booking but I know very little about that stuff. As for the yarn section... don't even get me started. Big Box stores all stock cheap brands, mostly acrylic and novelty yarn. And the needle selection is pathetic. For some reason Michael's doesn't small needles. Hello? What about sock knitters? Why on earth don't they have US1 and US2? Or a decent selection of double pointed needles? Or circulars for that matter. Seriously, knitting needles do not take up very much space. They have plenty of the typical craft store garbage like fake flowers and woven baskets but do you really need to drive all the way to Everett and through the Traffic Circle of Doom to buy that stuff? I say no. They only get 2 stars because you can return knitting needles; you can't return them at smaller yarn stores. Oh, and because I'm starting to do embroidery projects and they have the starter supplies. I'll go elsewhere once I invest more time in the endeavor. Don't ever buy anything at Michael's without checking the Sunday paper for a 40% off coupon. Michael's always makes me a little happier when I walk through the door. I don't know why. Something about the ribbons. AND STICKERS! I loved stickers when I was little, and they make me just as happy 20 years later! Now, I don't want to make anyone think I am crafty in any way shape or form. But I purchased a wedding invitation kit a couple weeks ago and they came out PERFECT! And of course at a fraction of the cost. AND I got an added discount with a coupon. It was awesome. Though I can't take all the credit for them coming out so well (my parents helped), but I was really proud of myself for somehow concocting something that looked practically professionally made. Besides having a decent selection of invitations, Michael's also has a lot of books on wedding favor ideas, do-it-yourself flower arrangements and bouquets... perfect for any wedding on a budget. Another fun thing I learned the other day was that they do these craft classes for kids. Looked like a fun and productive way to spend a rainy (or wintry) Saturday afternoon. Good selection, easy parking, store is clean, but this review is for a birthday party that we attended here a few weeks ago. Didn't know they hosted parties and was intrigued. When you enter the store, there is a good sized room to your right and that is where the party was. This one was for an 8 year old girl and they were told to put on aprons and decorate a box with paint, stencils and stickers. It seemed pretty casual and they had fun. The room was small so they all sat in their seats, so interaction was minimal. There was a staff member in the room who was friendly enough but didn't help the girls with ideas for their designs. Once the boxes were decorated, they had pizza and cake, took a group picture in the main entrance to the store by a happy birthday sign and then the party was over. Nothing special or exciting, little to no instruction, but they had a good time. I personally would have liked to have seen a demo on different techniques for painting or design. No music in the room, not really a party atmosphere. Would have liked more than what seemed to be a room rental and basic craft session. read more

Although I like Michaels because I can usually find whatever I need for crafting there, I have to give this particular store two stars because of my experiences with sale items. First, the clearance sections are very disorganized. It's kind of fun to hunt for cheap treasures when you have the time to leisurely dig through messy piles, but if you're looking for something in particular you'd be better off avoiding clearance altogether. Most importantly, and probably related to the disorganization, is that I have had several instances now where the clearance price marked on an item (with a sticker!) does not match what it rings up for. The cashiers either don't notice or don't care, and I feel like a pain for bringing it to their attention. This has also happened with items on sale too; recently an item marked as 80% off (yes I double-checked the item name and stickered sale cost) rung up at the original price, and the cashier was already reaching for my card before I realized what had happened. It's one thing if a final price is a couple of cents off on an item once, but repeatedly ringing up items dollars more than they are advertised is starting to feel like a slimy process of ripping off customers. Lesson learned: if you shop here and pick up items that are on sale or clearance, always double-check the final price. I will be looking for other craft stores in the future. read more

Ok, let me start of by saying It use to be my favorite store in Everett. but I have experience bad customer Service each time I go. It was not like this before. My one star is because I called today to see if they were hiring since is always short staff in that store. I got the rudest person on the phone she picked up the phone, I asked her "where can I get information for hiring?" She said strait cold " You need to go online ok bye" I said wait " where online I was already in your webpage and can not find careers" she said to me "we are too busy to help you" I said ok, Can you direct me to someone that can" She said " errr, hold on" I waited she comes back on the phone and says. "yeah you need to go online ok" I said ok where online am I looking?" she puts me on hold again" and I hung up.! Michael's, Michael's, Michael's. I love to hate it and I hate to love it. I have been a fine art student since birth and trust me, I know my stuff. When it comes to art, paying for it is not always necessary but when it is in fact necessary, Michael's serves as the last minute lifesaver. Although the store is filled with absolute junk such as gaudy fake flowers and an ugly, overpriced decor section, some small items are quite helpful. Their paper/card stock section is fabulous and they offer a good selection of pre-decorated papers made from various mediums such as cork, cardboard, and natural fibers...and the good point is that you can buy them individually..so if you only need one piece of paper, you do not have to waste money on a whole package. Also, they usually have a good selection of canvases and Windsor paints if you don't have access to a fancier art supply store...and though these can be pricey, always check the newspaper/flyer for the 40% coupon. And remember, the coupon is only to be used on regular priced items, so if you have your eye on an expensive Fredrix canvas or a large amount of acrylic paint, use that coupon!!! Lastly, forget about asking the employees where certain items are or where fine art-specific supplies are..they never know what you are talking about and usually appear to be either high or completely spaced out. Ask me where to find stuff, I know the store layout better than the workers. read more

I am a crafty lady and really like this place. Some people have complained about the selection and I 1/2 agree and 1/2 disagree. Why? Well, the selection isn't fantastic when you separate it into each mini catagory. Yes, they have a of of yarn, but not a lot that is good quality and unique. Yes the stamps take up more than an isle, but again, nothing out of the ordinary and quite as cool as places like Paper Source (I seriously heart Paper source). Each section of the store has your basic needs for crafters of all levels, but nothing too unique and fantastic (though I also have to say that a great crafter can make crap things look great!) They have a lot of TACKY stuff at this store, but the thing I love about it being a big craft superstore, is that you can find ALL your basic crafting needs at one big place and for good prices! Get your specialty items at specialty stores, and pay specialty prices. I tend to spend too much money here every time I go, and if I did do scrapbooking (which would be so dangerous) then I am sure this would have gotten the full 5 stars. read more
