You park and can go right up to the house, day or night, any time of year. The door uses a rope latch system and there's a sign asking people to keep the door shut. The interior is small, but there's an information wall that's a good excuse to linger and read. The original cabin, of course, was long gone before the books were even published, and this new version was the result of a fundraising campaign in the 1970s.

We found the place to be busy but not cram-packed; there was seating indoors and out for people to enjoy their drinks. We had only one person ahead of us in line, so the ordering process went fast. We ordered a cider flight, which included four drinks; at this point in the season, they had five to choose from. We also ordered some cookies and little apple strudels from the bakery case in the adjoining room, which also had different apple bags available for purchase. Several of the apples had a samples available, kept under a dome to keep away the fruit flies that were swirling around. The ciders and pastries were tasty. I browsed the shop afterward. This would be a good place to gift shop. They had jams and jellies, home decorative items that kept to a wine theme, and of course, their ciders and wines.

My first impression of the property is that it is beautiful. They did a nice job with the property. The outdoor vineyard and wedding area is also quite lovely. The property was clean, restrooms clean, nice outdoor patio for dining. For the wine tasting, our hostess did a nice job explaining the various wines as we moved through the tasting menu. I didn't catch her name but she was very nice. We also briefly met Matt who was also very friendly. I felt the majority of wines were more on the sweet side, however, there were definitely several that leaned dry. I would t necessarily call any of them "full bodied". For Wisconsin wines, these were actually pretty good. The pours were generous compared to pours you may receive when tasting in Napa, Sonoma or Paso Robles so well worth the price. You enter into the gift shop, which has all kinds of pioneer apparel, decorative and household items, and books. I was happy to find a penny smasher machine. After paying for entrance, guests can explore two sides of the building. One is focused on Laura Ingalls Wilder and includes family artifacts or related items along with quotes from the books. On the other side are rooms with exhibits that focus on the history of Lake Pepin, including several tragedies that've hit the area.
