You don't even meet the doctor in your appointments, only a nurse. I am 19 years old, and was told that I have too many "risk factors" (meaning I'm too young to be trusted with opioids) so they said they would not help me control my chronic pain. If you are young, do not expect PCI to help you as they will tell you that you are apparently too young to be responsible. It is unfair that someone should get worse treatment because of their age. I realize that young people are much more likely to abuse medication, but does that mean that young people with chronic pain should just suffer? I asked the nurse if they could do opioid rotations, which is when you use one drug for a few months, then switch to another to keep your tolerance low. The nurse said they do not, because "it is against Dr. Dooley's philosophy". When I asked why, she got very defensive. I pressed her further for an answer. What she finally told me was, "Dr. Dooley is a business man. He has these policies set in place because he wants to protect/benefit his business." This is outrageous. Instead of making decisions for his patients based on medicine, he makes decisions and policies that benefit him and make him money. He likely doesn't do opioid rotations because you have to start at a small dose and increase until you find the right dosage, so they would have to write a prescription for a few days at a time, then meet again to see if the dose would need to be changed. My guess is that it would be too inconvenient for him, and it's much easier to not do it. Opioid rotations could really benefit patients, but he refuses to do them, again setting policies that do not benefit patients. I have chronic pain, but it fluctuates in intensity throughout the day, so I prefer having a mix of extended release medication with instant release. However, the nurse said that Dr. Dooley will only prescribe one pill of instant release opioids per day. When I asked why, she said that "in his experience, he has found this to be the best route." I asked her, but she never provided any medical reasoning for this; instead stating that "it's his philosophy" again. This meant that on his prescription, I got some relief for my lower amounts of pain, but when my pain was worse I did not have adequate analgesia, so I was in much more pain than I should have been. Another policy of their's is that medications are prescribed on a monthly basis, and they will not adjust your medication until that prescription is over, even if you are suffering. This ties into the opioid rotation policy because he only wants you to come in once a month, get drug tested, then send you on your way with another prescription which is the easiest thing to do. The bottom line is: Dr. Dooley will not do anything that is inconvenient for him, so don't expect him to go out of his way to help you. I urge patients to reconsider Pain Centers of Iowa as a place to get pain management, and I also urge doctors to not refer their patients there. Dr. Dooley does not care about the people he treats; only about the money he makes and keeping his job as easy as possible. Dr. Dooley's policies come at your expense.

I commend the registration staff at both locations for their friendly and professional work. The physicians I see have been excellent, always willing to answer questions and explain procedures and findings. I recently visited the Imaging department at the UIHC main campus. I received excellent care beginning a call with Mickey on the day before to discuss the procedure. All questions I had were answered. Then the day of the test, Mickey met me in person (she remembered our call and has a positive and upbeat manner) and did the prep, again answering my questions and concerns and explaining what I should expect. The team for the imaging test was equally positive and complete in talking me through and completing the procedure. It was a positive experience.

During an incredibly difficult time, we felt there was a lack of compassion, professionalism, and communication. My father was NOT checked on or repositioned (every 2hrs) Not to mention the whole NCA fiasco! Who knows what an NCA is??? Not me & I'm an RN in many other states!!! Must be a UIHC thing. End-of-life care is one of the most important responsibilities in healthcare, and families deserve to feel supported and informed. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. I would encourage families to advocate for their loved ones and speak up if they feel their concerns are not being addressed. Or their family member is not being taken care of properly! FINAL NOTE: If your family member needs end of life care, go PALLIATIVE or with HOSPICE! DO NOT do Comfort Care!!! It's a SAD EXCUSE bc they had NO Palliative care beds available. There was nothing comforting done for my father in his LAST HOURS OF LIFE!!! Their Comfort Care (idea) is NOT up to date with CURRENT End of Life standards & practices!!!!!
