Meh. I feel like the quality of Mike's has gone downhill. I stopped by yesterday during a trip to the North Shore to get some lunch. I got the #9 plate, which is kalua pork, huli chicken, and I got mac salad. The kalua pork meat itself was fine. Not gristly and not too fatty. However, barely any smoke taste to it and was fairly bland. The huli chicken didn't have crispy skin. It seemed lukewarm like it had been cooked a while earlier and was just sitting. The sauce is amazing and I do think it's delicious with the sauce. Rice was just rice. Meh. Even adding shoyu didn't add much flavor to it, to be honest. The mac salad is extremely bland. I don't know if they need to add some acid to the mayonnaise or more salt, but it was pasty and no flavor. I would honestly skip getting the mac salad next time and get regular salad! That's how bad this mac salad was. Two slices of pineapple on the plate were fresh and flavorful. I did enjoy these. Service was okay. I had asked if they still honored kama'aina discount and was told no. That's fine; I understand not all places offer discounts. I don't know when kama'aina discount stopped being offered, but back in the day I used to receive it when asking. I did notice though that two guys who ordered before me got a "mahalo, braddah" in a friendly tone but I got a terse "thanks." Guess haole girls don't get mahalos even if local. It's just uncomfortable when certain people get friendly, effusive mahalos and others get terse thanks, like I didn't want to be serving you food today. Maybe cause it was Mother's Day and they didn't want to be there? Sure didn't feel like 'ohana today. So many flies around, it made eating uncomfortable. A few fly fans on tables but not at the one where I was seated, so it was basically like constantly shooing away flies and trying to take a bite of food super fast before they came back on my food. Probably I should have taken my food away and gone to the beer garden nearby with fewer flies. Meh. I used to really like Mike's but I will stick to Da Bald Guy and Seven Brothers when I visit the sugar mill in the future. read more

Checked in around noon on a Monday. Parking was pretty easy, the lot offers plenty of spaces on either side of the Seven Brothers main shops. Definitely worth stopping in at Seven Brothers Restaurant and or the bakery as well. Back to Mikes, You'll walk up and spot signage plus the yellow signature bus shack. I'd seen Mikes Huli Chicken on an episode of Diners Drive Ins and Dives and Guy said "the skin is as crispy as it gets next to being fried." That never left my memory. This being my next visit since seeing that episode, I had to try it. What did I order? - Mikes Huli Chicken Plate $17: 4/5 Stars - Chicken is a nice half chicken portion, perfectly juicy, nicely slight char taste. Crispy skin? Unfortunately no. - The Mac salad is nice. - Generous serving of rice *** Mikes Huli sauce is delicious! Be sure to find the self serve bottle and the to go sauce cups and get you some extra. You'll walk up and place your order at the window, pay, cash or card, then find yourself a seat. The cashier was simple and quick to the point. No small talk. The seating area within mikes truck is a decent size accommodating roughly 15 to 20 people. Outside, there additional tables as well. I stopped by here earlier today with my dad for lunch. We were making our way around Oahu and it was lunchtime. Once we saw all of the food trucks and stands, we knew we had to stop. After looking around at all of the places, I ultimately decided to stop at Mike's Huli Chicken since I love a good Huli Huli chicken. Since it was a trailer, there was not much to say about it other than there were two people working that day. Besides the trailer, they had a covered seating area with a decent amount of tables and seats and unfortunately a lot of flies as well. After perusing the dinner menu, I decided to go with the #1 chicken plate while my dad went with the chicken and shrimp combo. Mine came out first and the chicken was definitely not what I would call a Huli Huli. It had a bit of smoke flavor but did not taste as if it had been basted in anything salty or sweet. The darker meat on mine also felt fairly undercooked. Interestingly, the customer after me complained about the same thing and ultimately switched to a stir fry. Whenever my dad bit into his meal, it was the same. I know dark meat can be harder to tell if it is done, but at least two of the three of us were questioning it. My meal came with two scoops of rice and a mac salad while the picture on the sign had an actual salad with some pineapple on top. The mac salad was okay but nothing special. My dad's combo ended up being the same price as mine and he had the same chicken, so I am not sure why mine was the same price as his and he got six extra shrimp. Enough complaining though. The piece of chicken that was cooked and I did eat was decent and I liked the sauce that came with it even though it tasted like something mixed with red hot sauce. The bottom line for me is that I would not head back here again in the future. Between the possibly undercooked meat, the confusion over my dad getting shrimp but the same amount of chicken for the same price, and all of the flies (not really their fault), I just do not see it happening. read more

Mike's Huli Huli Chicken came to the rescue! I ordered from the Famous Shrimp Truck next door and it was god awful. Inedible. My husband went over to Mike's to see about just getting a small piece of chicken because we saw the sauce at the Mac Nut plant and wanted to try it. The guy at the counter said yeah you can get just a piece of chicken. When we opened the container it was literally half a chicken! Not only was the chicken cooked perfectly, but Mike's sauces are soooo good! I am so glad we had that to fall back on after being so disappointed next door. Might be my favorite meal of the Hawaii vacation. Mike's Huli Chicken is a food truck located at Kahuku Sugar Mill in Hawaii's North Shore. The employee was super nice, the food came out fast, and it was flavorful and delicious. All orders are prepared as carryout but there are tables available under an attached covered awning. The food truck is a repurposed yellow bus which has tons of decorations which attract attention. The sugar mill area has sand parking lots and there is also a city bus stop. read more

First time trying Mike's Huli chicken, my family spent our Father's Day lunch In kahuku and we were craving shrimp, instead of ordering from the Kahuku shrimp truck. We decided to eat at Mike's. The cleanliness of the tables were not too good. We asked for napkins to clean off the table, but they were so sticky and oily. The food didn't take too long. We waited about less than 20 minutes. The quality of the food was mid, some of my family members were concerned when biting into the chicken because there were bits that were still pink, however, my plate the chicken seem thoroughly cooked through, but it was rubbery. I honestly did not finish the chicken, I only ate half due to the texture but the shrimp was really good if I would go back, it would be only for the shrimp. The prices were moderate, they do serve big portions and they also do sell their house made hot sauce, my family is a fan of it, I'm not personally a fan, but I say give it a try. As a heads up, there are tons of cats that hang around personally they do not bother me but it seemed like it bothered other families that were eating there this particular one that I took a picture of is definitely affectionate. We arrived around 12:00 noon on a Sunday and there was ample parking nearby. It's my first time here but it was easy to find and well marked. Ordering was very easy with picture boards. I went with the Hawaiian plate special which included a quarter chicken, lau lau, Kahlua pig, choice of mac salad or toss salad and a pineapple wedge. There was also a small container of their secret sauce but it was a little sweet for me. I'm sure others would enjoy it. Service was fast and friendly and our order was prepared in minutes. The ambience has such a local feel surrounded by palm trees with the occasional chicken walking through the restaurant. There's about 20 seats in 5 tables and it's in the covered area so that's nice. This is quite possibly one of the best tasting way of cooking chicken that I've ever had. I don't know who Mike is, but I'd say he nearly perfected this chicken recipe. I got the chicken and shrimp combo but honestly I wish I had a whole chicken to myself because it absolutely outshined and blew the shrimp out of the water for me. Literally. First off, the shrimp was decent. It was garlic shrimp and the shrimp were actually pretty go for the place being a chicken spot. Super garlicky and flavor filled, but the chicken, man, I still think about it to this day. It was so nicely cooked, very succulent and moist still, the skin was actually still pretty crispy from the way it was cooked. The seasoning on it was perfect. The meat was tender as well. I can't quite describe how it tastes except saying that it is an absolute flavor bomb. It's VERY addicting and I kind of regret not getting any more plates to go. This experience I had was not so good. We were really looking forward to eating lunch. It was a late lunch, and they ran out of steak. I came here again just because we were in the area and have some requested items to send to the mainland. The wait was really long. I don't blame the cashier, I blame the customers on this as there was a group of tourists who could have ordered together but cchose to do so separately. A trip to the North Shore of Oahu usually requires a pit stop for some local food. Typically it's the traditional garlic shrimp plate lunch. On this occasion however, my brother wasn't PEELing for some shrimp (hehe get it? since you usually need to peel the shrimp?). The seating was a little full and close but luckily a table opened up and we were able to sit down and wait for our food. The ambiance itself was screaming hawaii country vibes for sure. Now on to the food: Big Island Smoke Meat Plate - Let me preface by saying, I am born and raised on the Big Island. To see that they had this on the menu, I was expecting the smoke meat I was raised on. With that being said, this was not the type of smoke meat I expected. There were too much fat and a little too sweet for my liking. In addition, it was swimming in liquid that is usually not seen in Big Island smoke meat. I do applaud the different take on this dish and appreciate the efforts, but this was not for me. I preferred it to the kalua pork, which was mostly smoky and little on the dry side. In my opinion, the best bite of meat actually came from our friend's Char Siu BBQ pork plate. Mike's char siu pork was savory and sweet. It tasted a bit different from your typical Cantonese style BBQ pork. While the lau lau had a good pork flavor, the taro leaves seemed overly bitter. The mac salad was alright, and the rice was decently chewy. I was wowed by the spicy, sour, and sweet dipping sauce. I think it had plum powder in it. Loved it! read more

This was our second visit, our first visit having been one trip ago back in '21. I think I got the same thing I did the last time we were here which is the Huli Chicken with macaroni and two scoops of rice. There's also a little side of Mike's sauce which was very good over the rice actually. There's a comfortable sitting area that is covered and we were lucky to have a nice little breeze come through. Several small adolescent kitties were on the watch for anything that might hit the ground by accident. The only bad thing was that the flies here are extremely persistent and very daring to land on anything even if it's for split second. But you're going to find outdoors anywhere here. We went with the chicken and char siu combo which was $17.50 while our friends tried the chicken and kalua combo (also $17.50). Each plate comes with two scoops of white rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. There's also a sauce that comes with the chicken, but if you want more/different sauces, you can go to the sauce area and get your fill. After trying out the food, we all agreed that it was okay. I wouldn't say that there was anything extraordinary about the food from Mike's. The taste of the chicken was flavorful and went especially well with the sauce. I personally thought the char siu and the kalua meats were a bit on the salty side. Wasn't bad, but I don't think I'd order those items again. It's one of the food trucks set in the gathering right on the Kamehameha Highway. There's no official name, so the yellow Mike's Huli Chicken truck is the closest thing you'll get to a sign for this gathering. Just turn right into the lot right after the yellow truck. The actual place to buy food is the larger yellow bus inside, not that food truck at the entrance. Great if you're planning to hang out around the northern beaches. You can eat there, but the location of this gathering of food trucks (on the outside corner of the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge) makes to get food to take with you. No bathrooms, so if you need them you might have to try the lot's western buildings (Seven Brothers - Kahuku "At the Mill", the sugar mill, the marketplace, etc.) if you really need it. Otherwise, Mike's has its own shaded patio area for you to sit down. Note though, that we had a bit of an issue with insects while sitting there. Mike's signature is their huli-huli chicken (a Hawaiian dish that's kind of a must-try when you're visiting the islands) but their menu encompasses different kinds of Hawaiian BBQ dishes. This includes kalua pork, seafood, and steak. If you're interested, they also have merch as well as spices and sauces that you can buy to take home. Personally, my favorite part is their macaroni salad. Overall, we found it to be alright. They're most well known for having been on Food Network and the Travel Channel, and we found it cool that Guy Fieri was here. The chicken looked great, though was a bit lightly flavored for us. Would recommend bringing wet wipes because you'll need to pull apart the chicken with your hands and (again) no restrooms). read more

We came too late for the Huli huli chicken, the chef recommended the stir fry. All I can say is.... BOMB! Super flavorful, the veggies were fresh and cooked to a nice crisp not soggy. The chicken was of course saucy and delicious. Trini, hope I spelled that right, was so friendly. She kept the area cleaned and walked to all the customers.
