An incredible spot in the very cute town of Te Anau. They have some seating outside but I actually recommend going across the street to the Te Anau Gardens for a beautiful view while you eat (obviously only if the weather is good). I've been obsessed with meat pies since I got to New Zealand and this didn't disappoint. We got 4 things: 1. Chicken Brie and cranberry (seasonal special) 2. Venison and plum sauce 3. Lamb and mint 4. Sausage roll The seasonal Brie and cranberry was by far my favorite with delicious Thanksgiving-esque flavors. Would strongly recommend in you swing by around when they have this. The lamb and venison were incredible. I particularly enjoyed the plum sauce making the venison incredibly tender. All 3 were on the heavier side which matches my palette, but maybe not yours! Miles Better Pies deserves all of the awards and recognition for their delicious creations. We tried the creamy chicken. We tried the pepper steak. We tried the mince. We couldn't find a single flaw in any of them. Service is fast and ambiance is minimal - it's a to-go operation so plan to pop a squad on a park bench outside or along the water to enjoy! They're open early but they also close early, so plan ahead and visit for either breakfast or lunch. We got lucky and caught them twice during our 1-night stay - they even held the door open for us before closing up for the day so we could get ONE MORE PIE. While in Te Anau, it's hard to miss the long line to Miles Better Pies! Located on the main street, it offers a variety of fresh mince pies, pastries, and caffeine options. I ordered the vegetarian lentil curry mince pie, which was the only savory vegetarian option (the other vegetarian options are the fruit mince pies). The curry was flavorful and the pie had a decent amount of filling. I would've ordered 2 if I knew how delicious they were! I also ordered a hot chai latte, which wasn't too sweet (how I like it). If you do like your drinks on the sweeter side, you can add syrups for a $1 upcharge. Whenever I travel to NZ, I binge on meat pies - which are just not a thing in the US, sadly. This place had lots of choices, including a fruit pie. I had the venison which was tender and flavorful and not at all gamey. Counter service for pies was really fast, especially for lunch time. Everything is bagged to take away, but there's a little space to eat there. A couple bar seats in front, and a (really) cramped set of tables in the back. Sandwiches are made to order, and we got our 4-year-old a toasted cheese sandwich, though ham and other choices are also available. It took a few minutes to come out, but it was worth waiting for. Gooey melty cheesy heaven squashed between golden flattened bread slices. No restroom, so wash your hands before you come. Also cash only, no cards. read more

They use vegetable oil in their pies!!! No butter! (There's a milk wash at the top). This is important since I can't eat dairy. The husband ate the milky tops and I ate the rest. I don't have a lot of "pie" experience since I have only tried pies since visiting NZ. I thought the pastry on the Miles version I tried was a little heavy in texture. It was very filling but the meat tasted kind of cheap and didn't leave me feeling very good. I liked they were open early so we could get pies on our way to Milford Sound early in the morning (6am). Fresh handpies!! They seem to have some interesting pies...Including a nacho pie (what!). I had their seafood pie!! Been looking all over NZ for a seafood pie, not many bakeries offer it, it seems. I'm glad I finally was able to find a place by the end of my trip. My bus to Milford Sound stopped here for a breakfast break and I was able to pop in. The seafood pie was essentially a chowder in a pie crust (topped with a cute little pie crust cutout of a fishy). It was AWESOME! I highly recommend stopping by here if you have the chance and love seafood chowder/hand pies. Only negative is that they don't take overseas cards (cash only ugh)...luckily I have enough cash left on me even though my time in NZ was coming to an end. This town seemed like a stop for a lot of your buses so I was a bit surprised that they didn't have an updated system that could handle payment that a lot of tourists would use nowadays. read more

Best pies ever!!! We ended up coming here twice in our short one night trip to Te Anau - once when we arrived and before we started a hike, and then at 7 in the morning before we went to Milford Sound. We tried the lamb and mint, steak/mushroom/bacon, Thai chicken, and veggie pies...the group consensus was that the lamb and mint was the best. This is also coming from somebody who rarely eats lamb because I find it to be too gamey. I almost thought they mistakenly made that batch with beef instead, but no, it is just that fresh and tasty with no gaminess whatsoever. So sad it's so far away and I can't taste those flavors again! The steak/mushroom/bacon pie was tasty as well - I personally would've preferred more mushrooms and less bacon, but I know that probably sounds like crazy-talk to some people. Veggie pie was decent but too potato-y. Definitely think this is a must-go type of place for anybody visiting the area, especially since it's so quick and you can just grab them and go on with your adventuring!!! read more

Absolutely loved this place. We tried the venison, lamb+mint, steak&cheese, and apple+blueberry pies. Our favorite was the venison one. It was tender, juicy, flavorful. The lamb and mint was okay. It was a little on the dry side and I get why they put the mint in there, to balance the inherent lamb taste but it does make it taste a little weird. The steak and cheese was okay. Nothing special about it. You basically can get the same thing elsewhere, just not in a pie format. The apple+blueberry pie is like an apple pie from McDonalds or apple turnover from Costco, just stuffed with blueberries. I would have liked to see other sweet pie options (eg peach, mango, or strawberries). I did like the apple+blueberry pie. You can easily eat this on the go and is perfect for the tours that you will be going on and quick to get given the limited time the tours give you. I would highly recommend this place if you're in Te Anau. read more

No better place for my first time trying meat pies than here. They specialize in all sorts of meat pies! They have pies from venison to beef to lamb. Whatever meat your heart desires, they have it. It is a small little shop next to the I-site in Te Anau. There is little seating, but many pies behind the counter. I ordered the venison, beef, and creamy chicken. I know it was a little gluttonous of me, but I wanted to try a few different ones. Apparently venison is very popular in NZ, as they have deer farms throughout the country. We stopped here early one morning because of good reviews on trip advisor and one of our friends said to try meat pies in New Zealand. We ordered the steak, mushroom, bacon and blueberry apple pies! Wow, they come out piping hot, freshly baked and were really delicious. We were impressed by both - but if we could only choose one would stick with the savory flavor. Steak was so tender, full of flavor from the bacon and filling enough to kick start a long day. As an added bonus - so reasonable at $6.50 NZ. We came through Te Anau again on our return to Queenstown and a local recommend we go on our wait for the glowworm tour. We went again! And this time both ordered the Bluff Oyster with Steak Pies - $10 NZ. Yum so good! Can't beat tender Steak and Oysters. There was also an Australian tour group there at the same time, we ended up sitting and chatting with some of them. We all enjoyed our pies! Highly recommend stopping here if you're in the area. Found this based on recommendation in a travel book, otherwise might not have seen it. On the first day, I had the lamb/mint and my wife had the creamy chicken. Day 2 we went back and this time I tried the seafood (like a big bowl of your favorite chowder in a pie) while my wife stayed with the chicken...and for dessert did get an apple/blueberry for later. Finally, on day 3 I opted for the steak/bacon/mushroom and wife went with bacon/egg. All were outstanding (as evidence by us going back 3 straight days). Each pie is a self contained meal and the crust is flaky and flavorful. Sandwiches also looked good but we stuck with pie. Not sure why others went with 4 stars but 5 for me for sure. If you are headed to Milford Sound and have time, stop by. Have offered to open a franchise in Washington state. read more

Great Pies, they told us the most popular one is Chicken and Bacon, so we got that, the steak and cheese and vegetarian. All were good but steak and cheese was the best. Also get the tomato sauce (ketchup) packets. They squeeze through the center so very diff from the states. Great quick lunch. We may as well have done the Kepler track sponsored by Miles's pies as not a single day went by without a mention of our end meal being Miles's pies. My favorite pie was the creamy chicken, and my boyfriend's was the lamb and mint pie, and if you have a chance to sit for a cup of coffee, I wholeheartedly recommend the chocolate chip shortbread they offer! On our drive out of town, we went back for a fourth time and walked away with some delicious egg and bacon pies... and shortbread. We discovered meat pies in Queenstown at famous fergbakery. They were fantastic, especially steak, mushrooms and cheese. BUT Miles Better Pies here in Te Anau are truly better. Our favorite was lamb and mint, and we also loved chicken satay and steak and bacon. So savory -- such flakey pastry! What really sets Miles' pies apart is the meat. Miles' pies are full of big chunks of perfectly cooked meat. Absolutely yummy. We can't figure out why meat pies have not caught on at home!
