Oh, you have to meet Max, and you will appreciate his work and energy. Now how do we find them? It was walking in, and he asked me to come back in an hour. Luckily we live in Millbrae, so that was not a big deal for us. I went back in the evening, where I could tell he squeezed me into his busy schedule. Max is amazing. Thank you Danny for saving my hair!! Long story short - I got a truly terrible haircut from a stylist while traveling who rushed through my cut and sent me out the door w uneven hair and terribly short layers in my already short hair. It was awful and I didn't notice it until I washed my hair that evening (amazing what you can hide with styling). It was too late because I didn't have time to go back. I went home and found Danny at Millbrae Hair Salon through a friend and learned that short hair cuts are his jam! I would give zero star if I could. I used to come here when David was here. He was VERY good. I hadn't been here for so long because everyone else was just okay, not so great. I thought I would give another try but that was the BIGGEST mistake that I had made. Worst cut EVER and the guy (I think his name was Max) started yelling at me in front of all the customers. He yanked off the cape and told me to leave. The haircut was not done. I asked if someone else can finish it up and they refused. He told me to leave and he demanded me to pay after he botched my hair. I said I will AFTER someone finishes up my hair. He said he is done although my hair was still half way wet. He said he owns the place and no one will help. I would not recommend this place. I wasted my time and now I have to find a place to get my hair fixed. I've been looking for a place to get my hair trimmed, styled and colored and Mai did such an amazing job! My fiancé's been coming here to see Max for years and both Max and his wife, Mai, are super friendly and great at what they do! I showed Mai a photo for an ombré hair color, asked her to trim 3 inches, and asked her to layer and thin out my hair for the summer. She did all of those things and made sure everything was to my liking! They were also great about health and safety with masks on the entire time and separating each chair for plenty of distance between customers. I was in town for business and i desperately needed a hair cut. Millbrae Hair Salon was 2 blocks away from the hotel so I took a chance. I do't remember the stylist's name, but I did not like the way he kept on telling me that this will be the best haircut ever. I mean really? I haven't sit down in the chair yet. I thought I found a good hair salon in the neighborhood after reading all the positive reviews. Man was I wrong !! I came in for a simple haircut and wash . It turns out it the must ugly haircut I have ever had !! . First of all, washing hair was painful. When Max ( I believe that's his name because that how others called him ) my hair , he was so rough, he was digging into my skull. Didn't even consult with the customer on their comfort level and water kept splashing on my face from rinsing my hair. Almost like I was having face wash. Now, we moved on to cutting , the method he cut my hair was very unique . Basically , he cut my hair 2 inches shorter as the way I requested. He really cut 2 inches off every single layers that I had. Didn't even thinner my layers as I told him. So my hair has a super straight end. I didn't see it at the spot because he curled my hair when he dry my hair. After I showered, washed my hair and dry my hair. I saw my hair looking super straight and roughly cut almost like someone took a bite of my hair in each section. So now I need to go to another salon to fix this ugly hair. I can't live this ugly haircut and a minute longer. If you want an ugly haircut and spend more money to fix it ,feel free to go there.If not, don't bother to go there, because it's wasted of money. I've come here twice already! The last time I came here, I got a haircut from Max. He did such a great job! He's so personable. My hair is bleached and I wanted to cut most of it off. I've been driving from the East Bay to have Mou cut my thick, wavy hair because the cut is incredible for such a reasonable price. He's precise, layers expertly, and works around my waves really well. Mai cut my hair yesterday and did an awesome job! I had medium length hair and was ready to chop it off so she did a slightly angled bob for me. It was my first time there and while it's always nerve-wracking to trust someone with your hair for the first time, she made me feel comfortable, chatted a nice amount and gave me suggestions on keeping my hair healthy, which is important to me. After consulting with three local Bay Area stylists and being told by every one, that booking must be done not only a month in advance, but I would have to pay a ridiculous amount of $200+ to revamp my color, I decided to give Mai a try based on my parents' recommendation. I've read through the negative reviews and I was surprised to read that some people were disappointed with their haircuts. It's unfortunate that their experiences have not met their expectations. I guess with any search for someone you can trust, comes trial and error, just like when you're looking for a doctor, an oil changer, and in this case a hair stylist. To those who have had a bad experience at Millbrae Hair Salon, I bid you good luck in your search for the hair stylist for you. To those who have had a great experience worth returning to Millbrae Hair Salon, cheers to you! I guess I've been one of the fortunate ones to have found the hair stylist for me. The reason I even started going to Mai is because I saw a coworker with nice highlights which looked natural, and that is how I learned about Mai. That was at least 10 years ago! To this day, I tell Mai I don't know what I would do without her. Through the years, I, too, have continuously received compliments on my hair from family, friends, and strangers. So, wouldn't this be reason enough to continually get my hair done by Mai? For me, I would say so, and I hope I can keep going to her for another 10 years or so =) So, to give you an idea of my hair type and for your own point-of-reference: - I am Filipino. - My hair is medium length (down to middle of my back, sometimes longer). - Strands are fine, but I have a lot of it, which makes it feel thick. 20 years ago or so when I used to get perms, my hair took the perms well and would sometimes last up to 2 years. Yes, I've been blessed to have hair that can be 'convinced' to do almost anything. Today, I prefer to keep my hair at medium length with long layers and bangs (long enough to still pull back in a pony-tail during workouts). I will admit that I rarely let my hair dry naturally, unless I will be staying home, because I don't like how it doesn't naturally dry flat or straight, which has been the case even when I had long hair of one length. So, I prefer to either blow dry my hair with a round brush for days I want my hair straight and smooth, but with some volume (Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum is great for fast drying time and keeping hair straight & smooth). Other days, I will use a curling iron (3/4" barrel) on large sections of hair to add body and some bounce to my hair. For nights out, I will sometimes add more curl by taking smaller sections of hair with a curling iron. Then for days I don't feel like doing anything to it, I pull it up in a casual French twist (held up with one of those big claw clips). I guess what I'm trying to say is that Mai has cut/trim my hair in a way that allows me to manage & style it fairly easily, and I am satisfied with the outcome of whatever I do with my hair. Also, I love how she has been consistent with doing my natural-looking highlights. From the cut to the highlights to blow drying and styling, I would say the price is very reasonable. Plus, I like the family-oriented atmosphere, and...if you ever want to catch up on celebrity news, Max can fill you in on it! ;-) read more

I really wanted to like this salon given the great reviews and Max is the nicest guy. However, this haircut from Max may be literally the most bizarre haircut I've ever gotten - and not in a good way. My hair was really long with no layers and my only request was to trim off 4 inches from the bottom and give me light layers. What I ended up with was probably 8 different of layers in my hair that was choppy and just looked like someone used kid scissors and randomly decided to cut their barbies hair. The styling was also terrible in the end even though it took a hour and while I opted out of the wash, I was so shocked at the final result after I washed and tried to style at home myself. I will say that there seemed to be a lot of regulars in the salon but the age group of the clients were definitely on the older side who are looking for just a trim...just a warning for those who wanted more of a style, this is NOT the place. read more

It has been several months since I got my first haircut here -- I wanted to give my hair some time to grow out and then judge the real quality of the cut. Again, I would say that I had an average cut. Who are these reviewers that are comparing this place to a Burlingame salon?? It's a fairly large salon and they do prefer you to make an appointment but when I went, it was pretty slow and it sure looked like walk-ins are fine too. After not adding any color to my hair for almost five years I decided that I was ready again for a fun change! My mom has been seeing Max for while for her color so I decided to give him a try. I was super happy that I was able to get in within a day of calling and at the time that I was hoping for. I was looking for a subtle fine caramel highlight to slightly lighten my dark brown hair without being overly drastic. Max knew EXACTLY what I wanted from the minute I described it to him without me having to get into too much detail. He is SO friendly and personable always calling you by name. It was indeed a beautiful day on Saturday when I decided to come visit Millbrae Hair Salon for the first time. I am big on Yelp so I had to thoroughly research places before I go for a service etc. I called on Fri and left a message. The owner, Max called me and left a very nice message. So then I called him back and picked the time he has open and scheduled me with Ann. It wasn't hard to find parking and they have a free Public Parking couple of steps next door. As I walked in, I got greeted and waited a bit. Then I met with Ann, she's nice and really listened to my concern and I showed picture and even asked her to take a before photo (see pic on the left). She then went to suggest what would look good, she proceeded with cutting my hair and then base color to cover my gray hair. Then she suggested highlights for my hair and really paid attention to my hair. I was so happy with the results and service I got from this place. I will definitely come back.
