Whilst browsing the shops and buying random things we don't really need we found a Deli called Benedicts. It had a great selection of local produce;chutneys, pork pies, artisan breads etc and attached to the Deli was its own restaurant. Impressed with the selection of produce and surroundings we opted to eat there. After only a few minutes a table was available for us and sat down to peruse the menu. To start we ordered Antipasti to share and for mains we ordered Seafood Linguini, Chicken Skewers with Stir Fry and Home Made Fish Pie. After 20 minutes our drinks arrived and after waiting an hour and asking where our food was our Antipasti arrived! It was lovely but waiting an hour for something so simple didn't fill me with joy. Both the Linguini and Fish Pie were good and sizeable portions but the Chicken (I think it was chicken anyway) was terrible. The stir fry whick consisted of 2 leaves of bok choy on someting beige, was overcooked and 3 tiny skewers of meat. When you've waited well over an hour at this point, it just isn't good enough and we were hungry! My main issue with this restaurant is the service. Its REALLY poor and very disorganised. There were plenty of staff but nobody knew what was going on, tables weren't cleared and the they don't know the meaning of attentive. I don't want someone constantly asking if everything is ok, but just once would have been acceptable. I felt like I lost half of my weekend just on a lunch! Like I said, food (apart from Chicken Skewers with Stir Fry) was good. Just don't pop in and think you'll be able to have a quick lunch!!

This consisted of eggs (I chose poached), vegetarian black pudding, beans, toast, hash browns and grilled tomatoes. I opted to swap the mushrooms (ugh) for spinach. It was good overall. One of my eggs wasn't runny which was a shame and the whole breakfast was lukewarm, but the black pudding was really tasty. It had pearl barley in it and really did taste similar for real black pudding which was clever. My boyfriend thought they were a bit stingy on the beans. I had a spiced chai latte with almond milk (nice but not hot enough) and my boyfriend had a luxury hot chocolate which came with cream and a flake (he could have had marshmallows too). The place has a great ambience and feels very chilled out. The service is excellent and it has a really cute deli and shop attached to it. Definitely worth a visit as there are not many great places for brunch in the Ribble Valley.

As fast paced city folk (from DC and Hong Kong), it seemed like the food and coffee came out a bit slowly but it gave us a minute to sit down, relax and remember that we don't need to be in a rush ALL of the time. I had a full English - my first of the trip - and it was delicious -- I substituted the black pudding for an extra egg. The yolks were so orange and the butter on toast so yellow -- just a little reminder that all is right in the world. Mmmhmm.

Just as well after two large cups of coffee. The rustic vibe is perfect and the menu looked really good. I could even select vegan options. More of that on my next visit. Although I hadn't said it in so many words, my wish was for a venue special enough to make her feel like a princess but still relaxed enough for us to get to know each other. The Sun Café Restaurant was the perfect venue. From a quick walk around in the rain, Lancaster looks to be a pretty little town with some narrow cobbled backstreet that reminded me of Edinburgh. The Sun is situated on one of these backstreet. The décor and ambience of speak of relaxed quality and of The Sun having put roots down a while ago. From the website, The Sun looks to be run by a very hands on chef-patron. From the outside, I found it very inviting, especially the detailing on the custom wrought metal. Inside, it is definitely a smart restaurant and I am guessing that the 'Café' in the name refers either to an earlier incarnation of this place or else serves to alert potential customers that The Sun also offers breakfast, lunch and coffee much more informally. Our evening played out beautifully - from 6.30pm, we enjoyed the peace of the place to ourselves for the first hour and after that it was just nicely busy for a weekday evening. With the food, I have to admit to not have been that hungry and also absorbed in my highly charismatic companion! We were both impressed by the presentation of her main which was pancake parcels filled with spinach and cheese, the parcels being bags tied at the neck with a chive or similar! I had a starter with a fancy name that was basically a small portion of ratatouille surrounded with a sweet and sour sauce based on pureed butternut squash. As sustenance, mine would have left something to be desired, but in terms of giving this keen cook taste sensations and a velvety texture that I couldn't imagine coming up with at home, I was pleased. My companion had some indulgent chocolate brownie dessert which seemed to hit the spot. The white wine was also pronounced satisfactory. Service was really good - our elegant blonde waitress made us feel at home but special. Rounding up with a tip, the bill came to £35 for one vegetarian main, one starter, one pudding and two glasses of wine. All in, The Sun is a great venue. Although not cheap, I felt our meal was really 'grandstanding' it for a special occasion, without breaking the bank. My companion tells me mains here are reasonably sized, although starters apparently can be on the small side. But whereas I might even grudge the cost of a Pizza Express meal, I didn't feel that at all here. If you live locally, the breakfast and lunch menus are totally different and priced much lower, so that is something The Sun can do for you on a budget! My home patch for dining out right now is Manchester. I've only tried a couple of Modern British/European restaurants that would compare to The Sun (Thomas in the Northern Quarter, Bistro West 156 in Didsbury, but for an all-round dining experience and imaginative vegetarian options, The Sun is definitely better IMO.

They were happy to reserve space for us and despite our group being pretty loud and even a little rowdy at times, the staff was all smiles and joking right alongside us. The owner, a delightfully smiley frenchman, came upstairs to personally serve some of the dishes. Each of us had ordered something different, plus a starter and a dessert, and there wasn't a single complaint out of anyone. They even brought us some party crackers, haha! I am pretty new in town but I hear from a lot of people that the brunch here is great and that the lunch specials are a good way to try out the menu without going broke.
