These repairs have been funded by the Community and Grants and are costing in the region of 130,000GBP. St Matthew's Church is located just of Cotham Brow in Bristol. It is in a lovely quiet area and…read morecould be easy to miss however there is a small road sign indicating the turning. The building itself is quite large for a local Church. The first thing you notice when you approach the building are the bright red doors which are actually very inviting! Inside, the building is very spacious yet cosy at the same time. Furthermore the Churchyard is really pretty with a couple of benches and pathways. The people I met were all wonderful. They were all so friendly and welcoming and made me feel at ease straight away. There is also lots going on almost everyday, indicating the Church is an important part of the community. There is also a playgroup on every weekday. I did notice that there wasn't any off road parking available and all the nearby roads were all full. However the Church is just a couple of minutes from the number 20/21 First bus stop.

There aren't many grounds here and its on a small, urban street so parking can be a problem and there's not much space to mill around after the service having a chat. However, the church is really beautiful and peaceful inside and a variety of services and activities are offered. The priests are very helpful and friendly. If you are a 'Christmas only' churchgoer, then make sure you get there early - midnight mass in particular fills up really quickly and often its standing room only!

Inside, however, is one of the warmest welcomes I've ever received. It's very much a community church - small, relaxed - and the minister fosters a conversational and informal style during worship. Other local preachers take different approaches with a small, growing congregation, in one of the most diverse areas of cardiff. Theologically it reflects this diversity in both the approach to worship and the topics covered. The area around is very mixed - the old tiger bay alongside the modern Cardiff Bay. Some of Loudoun Sq itself is quite tatty, but don't let it put you off.

This is all part of a movement to reach out to the students that walk past their door every day, and i think it works.
