I'm sure there are great LCSWs, but their qualifications vary, and if I'm going to bring up my fazzah and muzzah, I'd rather do it with a psychologist. Bob is, of course, a good listener. You'll not only get a lot out of talking through your thoughts and feelings aloud (things feel very different that way than when "said" in your head), but you'll get his voice of experience. I didn't find Bob heavy-handed; I'd do most of the talking, but his feedback as I went was valuable. Therapy isn't magic, but your internal monologue hasn't heard it all (and worse) 1,000 times: he has. I really believe you're better off figuring out whatever it is with an outside, neutral professional's perspective in the mix. Last I spoke with Bob (in process of finding a therapist for a friend), he clued me in to why I couldn't find any therapists who took United (United Behavioral Health): apparently, of all payers, they pay least. I'm back to United in my current job, but if I had cause, I'd still call Bob first and see if I could make a larger out-of-pocket payment to resume with him. He'd offered a sliding scale for those who have to pay the whole thing out-of-pocket, so I know he can be worked with. I didn't take him up on it, but he also does group sessions. I have to think it's not a bad thing to have a therapist on your team, much as you have an attorney, a priest, a urologist, and a financial planner: things are going to happen. If Bob's not for you, I'm sure he'll refer you to someone who is.

And he has amazing recall of things I've told him in prior sessions. I did most of the talking and he made comments and asked questions. His questions pushed me to consider issues that I had not perceived, ultimately leading me to profound shifts. My life is qualitatively better because of the work I have done with Dr. Harverstick. If you are willing to put in the work to gain greater understanding, I think there is no better therapist than Dr. H.

Amely was very stoic in our consult. For folks who want a therapist who comes off as unempathetic, she may be fine. I shared with her some of the reasons I was seeking mental healthcare, including some recent tragedies in my family. (Deaths, being in a shooting, etc.) Amely's response to this was the reason so many adults will not go to therapy. It was so unhelpful and tragically misplaced, I couldn't help but laugh. She sent me a document of "coping mechanisms" that included recommendations such as watching cute cat videos and to eat a little chocolate. Read the room, Amely. This is the reason people are afraid of therapy - because instead of having a human conversation with a therapist, I was met with a robot who told me to eat candy and watch YouTube. I ended up finding a therapist that treated me as a human. It was much better than this experience, which I wasn't even going to take the time to review, until I noticed they billed me and my insurance for a free consultation. Nice.

In my brief time as a patient of Roots Behavioral Health, I have received the worst treatment I…read morehave ever experienced from any establishment, medical or otherwise, in my entire life. For context, I'm currently taking two common psychiatric medications (bupropion aka Wellbutrin and duloxetine aka Cymbalta). Both of these drugs are highly physically addictive and cause horrendous withdrawals if you stop taking them. In fact, Cymbalta's withdrawals in particular are so infamous that they even have a name: Cymbalta syndrome. We're talking shakes, chills, sweats, dizziness, tics, palpitations, diarrhea, puking... definitely not a state that's conducive to being happy or productive or even functional. This practice dropped me like a hot potato, with no warning and no recourse, while I was dependent on these incredibly addictive drugs. And this was just the cherry on top of a long list of rude, dismissive, and sometimes outright disdainful behavior from these people. To start with, communication with this practice is nearly non-existent. If you are the type of psych patient who needs to be able to communicate with your clinician, tough luck. During the short time I was seeing one of their clinicians, the practice could only communicate with patients through an incredibly janky portal program called Klara. Klara requires three-factor authentication (not a typo) every single time you log in. Its minimalist user interface is just a plain white void with no settings or options, so it's not like I had the ability to make it any easier to use. Due to the jankiness of Klara I ended up missing appointments with these folks three separate times - twice because Klara has some kind of final step to finalize my appointment that I somehow did not see, and once because their scheduling system straight-up deleted my appointment. Three times I logged on for my appointment and nobody showed up. To their credit, Roots has since switched to an easier-to-use portal software called Athena, but this isn't without its problems, either. Way back in September they sent out messages saying that they would stop using Klara on October 1st, 2024, and that all patients would have to make Athena accounts before then. I tried several times to set up an account but Athena kept throwing up error messages. I have other doctors who use Athena and I don't have the same problem accessing my accounts with them. When I sent a screenshot of the error messages to the Roots folks, they had no solutions other than to try using my phone instead of my laptop to access the portal (not an option since I have motor skills issues that make it very hard for me to type on a phone). They also confirmed that use of the Athena portal was mandatory in order for me to remain a patient. Since it looked like this was not going to be possible, I sent them several messages requesting help in finding another med management practice whose communication options were more accessible. Big mistake. Unbeknownst to me, Roots has something in their fine print that says they will automatically dismiss anyone who makes noise about looking for another doctor. Something about "ensuring continuity of care". Seems like dropping people without a backup plan is the opposite of continuity of care, but what do I know? I'm "crazy", after all. I don't have enough information to speculate on how this could possibly be legal, but evidently it is. My requests for help finding another practice went unanswered for weeks. Instead, one (1) business day before my next scheduled appointment with Roots, I woke up to a text that said I had been discharged from the practice and that no further communications from me would be answered. They did reply to my frantic messages on Klara enough to explain about the fine print that I had violated, but stopped replying after that. And that was it. Cut loose while dependent on two highly addictive meds, and no way to get more. So now, at nearly 40 years old, I'm having to worry about crapping my pants in public due to the combination of GI symptoms from my untreated anxiety and GI symptoms from medication withdrawals. I have since found another practitioner, but NOT with any help from Roots. Avoid these people if you can. Utterly psychopathic behavior from people who purport to be in the mental health business. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

After spending lots of time and money here, I don't understand why they make that claim. We were given a non-Christian cookie-cutter curriculum whose biggest feature is its ability to successfully predict divorce. Our counselor was friendly and patient. She honestly tried to help us, but she was unfamiliar with the most basic principles of marriage as described in the Bible. I believe she was restricted by the poor curriculum and a poor advisor. If you want to fill out a long survey that scientifically predicts your odds of getting divorced, go here. If you want Christian counseling to restore and sustain your marriage, find a good church. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21
