Ming Tasty is a Cantonese restaurant located in the Lakewood Shopping Center, near the Sunnyvale/San Jose border. This place is known for its casual Cantonese fare, especially their wide variety of porridge offerings. If you live in the East Bay, their name may ring a bell with you, given that they once had another location in San Leandro (now closed). My family and I met a couple friends for dinner here on July 7th at 6:30 pm. First thing I noticed upon entering were the pictures of Chinese celebs next to the cash register. Who would have thought stars like Chow Yun-Fat and Ang Lee had dined here before? The place was pretty busy. We were seated at a smaller round table near the back, very close to the quartet of live fish tanks and their semi-open kitchen. A quick glance revealed a colorful and modern looking interior. Seating was made up of booths and tightly packed tables. There were a couple TVs showing programs from Hong Kong. Since we wanted variety, we decided to order à la carte instead of their $105 Peking duck dinner set. We ordered: - Sautéed Pea Shoots with Minced Garlic ($16.50) - Salt Baked Free Range Chicken ($16, half) - Beef Stew Cooked in Clear Broth ($15) - Fish Fillet with Creamed Corn Sauce ($13.95) - Fish Fillet with Vegetables ($13.95) - Salt and Pepper Pork Chops ($14.50) - Seafood Eggplant Clay Pot ($16.50) - Rice x 5 ($8.25) The pea shoots were excellent! They were extremely fresh and not fibrous. The minced garlic added a nice fragrance and taste to the shoots. The salt baked chicken looked very small (kind of like large Cornish game hen). Then we realized free range chicken are usually smaller. Taste wise, it was very good. The saltiness was baked into the chicken but it didn't dry out the meat. It remained moist and tender. The beef stew dish was a failure of epic proportion. The broth with bland despite the application of different aromatics. The meat should have been more tender. The worst was the daikon. It was fibrous and undercooked, and failed to absorb the flavorless broth. Fish fillet with creamed corn sauce was very good. Large pieces of white fish were battered and deep fried to golden brown perfection. The sauce, made with creamed corn and egg flower, had the right consistency. The batter maintained its crunchiness even those most of the pieces were covered with the sauce. The fish fillet with vegetables dish was also very good. The fish was moist and seasoned well. The choy sum was very tender. The salt and pepper pork chops came in a massive pile. The chops were lean and quite meaty. Not overly greasy. Great salt and pepper taste. The seafood eggplant clay pot was great with rice. The sauce was very tasty. Eggplant pieces were cooked soft and absorbed the sauce well. Fresh seafood (white fish, shrimp, and calamari) was used and tasted fine. After we finished our meal, complementary dessert (sweet red bean soup with tapioca) was brought to us. It was served room temperature. The sweetness was just right and the consistency was excellent. The staff was friendly. I thought they did an adequate job. With T/T, it came out to $145. We all agreed that the food was overall very good (6 out of 7 dishes). I can see myself coming here again. If you find yourself looking for good Cantonese food in the South Bay, this is a pretty good option. I ordered via UberEats take-out and so my friend arrived at the exact time when the App indicated it was ready but ended up waiting in restaurant for 20 mins and was ignored by staff altogether despite waving and trying to speak with them. As a result, I tried calling and tried 4-5 times but no one answered. In fact, my friend witnessed the staff turn off the phone. My friend shared that an Uber driver arrived and was ignored, too. I would have been OK with the fuss if the food was good, but the two rice noodle rolls tasted sour. Chicken wings and turnip cake were burned, fried rice was wet and plain tasting, only the congee was ok. I'm not a first-time customer and so, this incident disappointed me. read more

This spot was the nearest Chinese restaurant offered on UberEats that wasn't crazy expensive. I had previously been here before to eat their lobster with E fu noodles, which was very delicious and priced decently. This time for our to go order, the dishes we had seemed to be a bit disappointing. Also of note is that the UberEats sync with this place is off as it kept delaying our order ready time when in fact our order was ready. Or maybe this is the restaurant's fault for not pushing the right button on UberEats. The good was the French style stir fried steak, which had a mildly sweet taste to it in a good way and served with lots of mushrooms and onions. Our stir fried eel dish wasn't anything special and I wish they would've presented it in a different way without bones. The stir fried fish filet with vegetables was fine until I discovered a bug in between leaves of bok choy. A no-frills Cantonese style lunch place located off Lawrence. Consider it an alternative to Cooking Papa with less noise and adjacent tables just as close. Their menu has a good selection of noodles, rice, clay pots, and stir fry choices. I'd have to say their roast duck and roast pork is right on par with Cooking Papa. To get a good sample of this, I suggest ordering a rice plate that includes both. For a lighter lunch, I usually get the wonton soup which has some noodles, bok choy, and a few cuts of the roast duck. I ordered 3 items: Beef ChowFun with Black Bean Sauce, Broccoli Beef and Sizzling Seafood Tofu. The chow fun noodles are still white. The sauce didn't soak in so flavorless. Beef broccoli seems to have been steam and the sauce not mixed in. Lots of broccoli and a few beef hiding. About our 4th or 5th visit here. Just writing in today. Instead of waiting for the restaurant next door, we decided to come here again. Actually we were mainly looking to have congee, so this place was the right bet. Took us much longer to decide on food than to get it. Super supreme S bowl congee out first. Personal preference to add some black pepper to it, but really filling, large portion for 2 people, and solid flavor. Like the white fish inside, not thrilled about the salmon chunks, but overall a super-nice, filling, warm dish for a cold day. Second dish out was pan fried turnip cake. One of my all time favorites! Very nice consistency, maybe a little on the loose-pack side, (falls apart easily when try to pick up with chop sticks) but nicely flavored. Next was the shrimp and pea sprout dumplings. Had chives in there, and I'm not a chives guy, but luckily not too much. Just nice! Good amount or meat-shrimp and veggy. Little over steamed, but didn't affect flavor. Lastly we got the chickens feet and siu mai together. Again, both solid in flavor and value. Lots of meat in the siu mai. I've come back twice since my initial visit and although the service still leaves much to be desired, their food and price does make up for it to some extent. For any Chinese place, 3-3.5 stars is fairly common as long as the food is worth it. Seating here is very cramped so the dim sum is order-only, no carts coming around, but they also have a lot of options other than dim sum (their fish fillet congee is very good, try it!). Don't be pressured into ordering any of their seafood specials just because a server recommended it (they get kind of pushy about it). All of their dim sum items are good, but nothing that would blow your mind. They make up for that with tons of options for every single kind of dish - from soups to fish to meat to noodles, etc. As mentioned, seating isn't the best and the tables aren't spectacularly clean or stable (be wary of wobbly chairs/tables). It's almost always crowded during meal times and you can only make a reservation if you have a big party (like 10 people+). Check in with whoever is at the counter up front to get a number (they don't take names, they just hand you a number ticket). They sometimes mess up your tip amount (or just add it on for you even if your party isn't particularly big), but other than that, the food is pretty good for the price. It was 10pm on a Saturday night, and it wasn't busy but they had some customers. The menu option is large and has plenty of pictures. If i can give 0 stars on Yelp for rating I would gladly do that to Ming Tasty. Honestly there is nothing tasty here. My husband and I had dinner recently at 11pm. We only went here because it is open till late. We ordered the lemon chicken as we could hardly find any poultry options. When we asked the server how intense is the lemon flavour, she couldn't care any less. The lemon chicken was bland, tasteless, very dry, thin slices of chicken deep fried and with lemon sauce on the side. And to our horror the sauce was very sweet. The waitress could have easily said it will be sweet or that she can check with the chef but did nothing of this sort. Haven't had any dish as bad as this before at any Chinese restaurant. I've driven past Ming Tasty numerous times on my way to Hong Kong Saigon for dim sum (they are only a few stores apart from each other), but never really noticed this restaurant. They were busy around 11:30am on Mother's Day due to the overflow from Hong Kong's Saigon, and this was also the reason we ended up eating here. They have an extensive menu with hundreds of dishes, seemingly with a focus on Hong Kong style. We ended up trying: -Pumpkin Taro Congee ($10.95): Their congee had a thick consistency, and good flavor. Intention was to stop by Hong Kong Saigon for a quick lunch on Black Friday. There was a long line there so ended up a couple doors down, attracted by the Cantonese style dishes pictured on the windows. It was quite a pleasant surprise find. Their menu is quite extensive, from BBQ to porridge to clay pot rice to Hong Kong style baked rice dishes to even some dim sum items! We weren't super hungry and ended up ordering a seafood porridge, fried "e-fu" noodles and a tofu dish with three types of tofu. Service was really quick. All of us, including the toddler, enjoyed the dishes. They were all flavorful. He devoured a lot of the tofu! The menu is quite extensive, and it helps that there are some pictures, for those who want to see what you're getting. The jook (congee) is excellent and plenty to share with your family. We usually order fried donut with it, but they could improve on not over frying it, so it's hot or miss. So many dishes to try and name, but there's always something for whatever mood you may be in. I have been Watching them build Ming Tasty for months . Finally they are Open. I rolled there in my Work Whip . I parked right in front and rolled in .I was immediately greeted and seated. Ming Tasty is Open till 3 Am 7 Days a Week . That's Cool. Its an Upscale HK Cafe set up with numerous LCD TVs with HK music videos playing. I perused the Menu and ordered the Roast Pig and Black Bean Fish Fillets. First out was the Roast Pig it was cooked perfectly . The Meat and Rind was shaved off the Bone . And the Rind was Crispy but not hard and came with Oyster dipping sauce, This was so Yummy. Next out was the Black Bean Fish Fillet this was prepared well to and was very tasty too, Dessert I had Red Bean and Coconut Squares this was good too. Ming Tasty came highly recommended by a family friend because of the large variety of choices - no kidding! The menu features everything from dim sum to traditional dishes to Americanized dishes. Coming for lunch, we ordered a few bowls of porridge, a couple dishes of dim sum, and also tried their fried rice/noodle dishes. Most of what we ordered was decent to pretty good. I definitely recommend the chicken and abalone porridge, as real abalone was used (not the pretty pieces, but good enough)...however, I would not recommend the seafood porridge. It featured a few medium sized shrimps and imitation crab meat ("seafood"), The dim sum was rather unremarkable in my opinion - can be skipped entirely. Our Chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle was overdone. The Chinese donut basically shattered from being over fried. Our shrimp dumpling was standard; skin wasn't too thick, but the shrimp was a little bland in my opinion. And lastly, our runny yolk buns weren't even remotely runny. But where the dim sum fell short, I thought the pan-fried house noodle and Macau fried rice definitely picked up the slack. The pan-fried house noodles seemed to feature way more gravy than I was used to...but it turned out to be just right. As for the Macau fried rice, it was basically a yang chow fried rice but with shredded peking duck tossed in - a totally DELICIOUS addition! This review is long overdue. The short summary is: The quality has GREATLY declined since they first opened and there are too many great Chinese places out there to waste your time at Ming Tasty. Save your time and tummy and go elsewhere. Ming Tasty is in a pretty convenient location for us so we've given it way, way to many chances. In general, the food is usually average but but way overpriced. Lately, though, we can't even say that. Here is an example of our last take-out order, which cost us over $70. We were having another family over for dinner and because of unforeseen circumstances had to order takeout instead of cook. We ordered combination fried rice, which had little to no flavor. We don't mind this too much as we use it to pair with other dishes... it was expected. The worst dish was the Orange Chicken, which was completely FRIED BATTER with sauce. We literally only found 3 actual pieces of chicken in the whole order. Unreal. My signature dish, Fish Filet in Black Bean Sauce, but this time and last, it was literally almost completely peppers and onions. Not acceptable. The Beef and Veggie Noodle was incredibly bland. The corn chicken soup was also incredibly bland and mostly broth. We also ordered $9 worth of BBQ Pork, that ended up being dry and a very small portion. Needless to say, despite its convenient location, we will never eat there again. Nor will our friends, who were experiencing it for the 1st time. What a disappointment, and slight embarrassment. Crazy thing was, I was joking before about going to Panda Express for takeout but in the end, we all wished we had. Panda would have been half the cost and better tasting, even though it's the type of cookie cutter corporate food that we like to avoid. I would give 3.5 stars but I guess I'll round up because I didn't find anything particularly wrong. The place is pretty clean and the decor is trendy. Not one of my favorite Chinese restaurants, but they do have a wide selection of dim sum food. They do have a huge parking lot so parking is never an issue. Service isn't amazing here but it gets the job done. The usual food we get: Salted fish & chicken fried rice is my favorite. I like that its not too salty nor too oily here. Rice is soft and flavorful. Garlic pea sprouts are delicious here! The vegetables taste fresh and tender. It isn't too salty so rice isn't needed. Tofu, mushrooms, and bok choi is healthy and vegetarian friendly. Minimal oil in this one and cooked perfectly. It is a little pricier than typical Chinese restaurants I've been to. Every time we come because next door Saigon is full. Here are issues why you should not go there. 1. Hygiene: 11am they have piles of dishes with food from last night sitting there, dishes not clean and food not removed, just sit on the plates. Mice and insects waters to feast. 2. Service: we ask for water from beginning to 3 times later to different people, only get 1 cup instead of 2 at the end of the meal. They have many (3-4) servers.
