On the morning of my visit, at approximately 7:05 AM, I stopped at the Brooks Travel Center…read moreMarathon located at 1849 E. Brooks Road. A few weeks earlier, I had also stopped there and noticed an "Out of Order" sign on the restroom door. When I asked the clerk if the restroom was truly out of order, she told me I could go ahead and use it. As someone who works in transportation and routinely drives large vehicles, it's challenging to find a clean and accessible restroom. For this reason, I want to make it known that the store displays "Out of Order" signs on both the entrance doors and the restroom doors specifically to discourage the public from using their restrooms, even when they are functioning. Incident on the Morning of My Visit After I called in my 10-7 at the Brooks Travel Center and attempted to use the restroom, I locked the door and shortly afterward someone began banging loudly on the door, aggressively turning the knob and speaking loudly at me. She demanded to know why I was inside the restroom, stated that the sign was on the door "for a reason," and informed me that I was not allowed to use it. She also threatened that if I came back again, "it would be a problem." At this point, I felt threatened and intimidated. I later learned that this individual was not a manager or the owner--she was the cook, a Black female with visible facial tattoos. She claimed the clerk had repeatedly told me not to use the restroom, which was completely untrue. The clerk had never said anything of the sort. Because of this behavior, I immediately contacted the Better Business Bureau, the Marathon corporate office, and I also contacted the Memphis Police Department to file a report. The responding officer told me they have had multiple previous calls about this same employee--"the cook." Follow-Up Incident - October 29, 2025 Unfortunately, the situation escalated again on October 29, 2025. I had just met with the owner the day before. During that meeting, he assured me that the issue with his employee--the cook--was resolved, that I was welcome to use the facility, and that I would not experience further problems. I also expressed to him that an employee's behavior is a direct reflection of the business and its leadership. However, on the following day, the exact opposite occurred. I am now questioning whether this is truly a 24-hour facility and whether the restrooms are closed during certain hours. If they are, this information needs to be clearly posted. The "Out of Order" signs were no longer on the front doors, but there were temporary "Out of Service" signs and yellow "Wet Floor" barricades blocking both restroom entrances--even though the women's restroom was fully functional. When I exited the restroom, the cook was standing in the aisle with her phone recording me, yelling that I had called the police on her and stating that as long as she is working there, I am not allowed to enter the facility. This behavior is now clearly harassment. When I informed her that I had spoken to the owner, she replied: "I don't care who you spoke with. You are not to come in here as long as I'm here." It is now obvious that this employee is acting without oversight and that neither the owner nor the staff is taking corrective action. The clerk working behind the counter witnessed everything and said nothing. She did not intervene. Statement from My Co-Worker Below is a statement from my co-worker who has witnessed problems involving the same cook: "Oh my. It's never closed when I go there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She and the manager were arguing. I heard their exchange. He said something to her and then told her a leg and thigh is $3. He also mentioned her attitude. She turned to me and said, 'You hear him?' I told her I was not getting involved. She said management crosses the line when it's something the cook does, but when it's their fault, nothing is said. I told her the problem is her tone--she's aggressive with him for no reason. He was trying to calm her down and she insisted she was calm. Just because she changes her tone doesn't mean she isn't going off. I believe they're having an internal issue with her. Most of the time she's outside parked on the side where I park. I didn't even know she was the cook until today when she asked if I saw what happened. The manager didn't do anything wrong. He was trying to de-escalate the situation."

It's a gas station/ convenient store. It's not in the best location either. I usually visit this…read moreconvenient store when I go to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts which is just down the street. Why? I like to come here and buy a lottery ticket. If you buy a ticket, you might win. If you don't, you have no chance of winning. Now, that's the way I look at it. On Scene: I have stopped by here several times. Here is my story of this place. If I come here in my like new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, a bum comes up to me begging for money. However, if I come here in my old 2000 Buick Lesabre, no one comes up to me begging for money. It's kind a questionable as far as me feeling safe stopping here every time especially in my truck. If I visit here in my car I'm not worried about bums coming up to me. One time I stopped and somebody pulled beside me in their old car and told me a " sob story " about his wife being pregnant and had her with him in the passenger seat. At that time, I was in my truck. Anyway, customer service is a little below average here. They look like they are worried about what kind a customers are going to walk through the door. They never speak or smile either - ever. Their bathrooms need remodeling too. It's not ever clean and you can see stains on everything. The parking lot is always congested too. It's hard getting in and out of here as a result.
