Dining at the Old Mill District in Bend OR We decided to dine here on our first visit to the Old Mill District. Prior to getting seated, though, we wanted to see the menu. The restaurant had a good number of diners but not crowded so we got seated immediately. The bento box was a good deal for 3-items at $17.95 dinner price and so hubby and I each had this. My three items for my bento box was the Salmon Teriyaki, Kalbi and California Roll. While hubby had the Chicken Teriyaki, Assorted Tempura and Beef Yakiniku. Each came with Mio salad, miso soup, steamed rice and veggie gyoza. It was a lot of food! I have had a lot bento meals in the past and Mio Sushi was one of the best I've had. To have my two favorite, salmon and Kalbi, together in one plate was great! The salmon teriyaki and Kalbi was so tasty and flavorful of teriyaki sauce. Cooked perfect! Mmm, delicious! I got full from my two dishes that I had to have the California Roll boxed to go. Unfortunately, hubby ate it all when we got back to our place so I didn't get a chance to taste and unable to comment on it. ¯\_('~')_/¯ Service was great. I have had plenty of ramen in my lifetime. This was the worst. The noodles were not cooked through, the soup was bland and tasted like murky water, the eggs were so overcooked that the white was rubbery. The fish cake with the pink swirl was not warmed all the way through. It was cold in the restaurant as though they were trying to conserve energy. Mio Sushi is pretty uniform no matter what location you go to, offering really consistent menu options and service. This location does not differ from the others I have attended and truly is a good place to eat. I ate here several times while in the area and never left disappointed in either the food, service or cost. I'm actually not sure where all the negative reviews are coming from. Are people just pickier in Oregon (or just the Bend region)? Maybe proximity to Portland is to blame, I don't know. But, coming from the East Coast (where we have very good sushi as well), I was impressed by the quality and selection. My chirashi dinner came with toro (fatty tuna) and fresh crab (not the fake stuff), which I haven't ever seen before in a chirashi dish. The bowl was big, too, and quite filling. I couldn't finish the rice. Each morsel of the fish was incredibly delicious, too, with fresh taste and texture. The pieces were big, and the texture was perfect. I guess I do agree on the slow service, though. The place was virtually empty, but we had to wait for refills and a table visit after the food arrived. I needed a sauce dish, but couldn't find anyone to help. So, I just got up and grabbed one myself. Still, all things considered, it was a good experience. The sushi was definitely worth it, and the location and decor were great. Sorry to hear so many other bad experiences, though. With the place as empty as it was, I would be surprised if they hang around much longer. Here's hoping they turn things around, though. read more

Dropped $80 on some very basic sushi. Worst service I have had maybe ever. When I asked a question about a roll that I didn't think had fish eggs, the server literally turned and LAUGHED at the other server. Didn't offer to remake it, just laughed and ignored the question. The other server just told me she has never seen the roll without fish eggs and walked away. we got there 30 minutes before the closed, made sure to ask if it was okay to ve seated still, and then ordered within 5 minutes because the server was standing at our table the entire time we were looking over the menu. Then when they asked if we wanted anything else because they were closing, one of the servers came over and said we had plenty to eat and were fine. When we were paying the server was stood over me staring at the screen watching my choose a tip option. I have never felt more pushed out of the restaurant. I need the owners of this place to understand something. Some people like spicy food without a sweet element and without an overwhelming amount of cucumber. Service was fine, there were no rolls that were spicy without some sort of sweet element to it. Be it a sauce or a mango. The only ones without it are wrapped in cucumber. Mio is a middle tier sushi establishment located near a lot of the resorts and hotels nearby. My girlfriend, sister, sister's boyfriend and I decided to eat here due to being sushi lovers from Cali we made assumptions that it's gotta be good. The sushi was lackluster and felt like it was missing something. We had an Aloha Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, Salmon Roll, and some Mango Salmon Roll. The Mango Salmon roll sounded so interesting and surprisingly it was pretty bland. My sister and her boyfriend ordered bento boxes and Kyru Ramen with chicken and some small basic rolls (California and Spicy Tuna roll). They said the chicken was "okay" and the Ramen was literally Top Ramen noodles.. I kid you not so I would stay away from the Ramen here. The miso soup here was actually my favorite part of the meal.. But the redeeming part of the establishment is the service. We had a phenomenal waiter named Scott! He was funny, engaging, played 90s music in the restaurant and looked like he loved helping others! Great at his job! He also looks like a famous MMA fighter and he loved the compliment haha. Overall, he was the highlight of the meal due to providing excellent 5 star service and the only factor that prevented this place from being a 1 star was his service. Mio Sushi's ambience is a bit cool and echoing, with polished concrete floors and high ceilings in a large space. None of that matters, especially during Covid. This is a high-volume sushi restaurant where you never have to worry about quality or freshness. Their sushi is excellent, with generous cuts for nigiri and sashimi. Their rolls are fun and creative, with options for both newcomers to sushi as well as seasoned sushi lovers. Staff are always cheerful and responsive, even during these difficult times. They offer delivery through all of the usual app-based services,. However, if you can take the time to order by phone and pick it up yourself at the door, you will save them from paying exorbitant commissions to Silicon Valley behemoths. Pickup at the door is straightforward: you step inside briefly, they give you your bill to sign (don't forget to tip generously--they can use it!) and grab your bag and go. The server was so kind and nice to us. She said sorry to us since we had to wait for a while to get our food. But it wasn't long at all. It's great experience. Great location, friendly, attentive staff, the room/space is neat, cheery. Have been in several times. The sushi rolls have always been unremarkable, but good, seemed fresh-ish, and aside from the gyoza appetizer, which are also good, that's all we've tried. The other menu items look great, nice selection, and saw a few dishes pass by that looked really good. The sake is fun, nice touch how they brought our bottle in an ice bucket. Neat kind of "open kitchen". We kind of stopped coming in spring/summer, to be honest, because of a fly problem. A nice spot to stop for some good food in the old mill area. Everything on the menu sounded so good I decided on the pick 3 bento to try the teriyaki chicken, beef, and a spicy salmon roll. The portions were generous and everything I had tasted great. There are so many more rolls available I definitely want to come back to try. Opted to go out in a limb and try this place again. Ordered DoorDash take out and was pleasantly surprised. The Harmony, Joy-Joy and Rainbow rolls were a nice quality and really fresh. The price point however: $18.15, $19.45 and $16.85 was a solid $3-5.00 higher a roll than my typical go-to sushi spot in Bend. The Good: Baked Dynamite appetizer (share this, it's large) Yellowtail hamachi nigiri (ask for ponzu) Miso soup Caterpillar Roll Seafood sunomono salad is really, really, really good Our most recent server, I think her name was Paris, was really friendly and helpful. Yet, even her smile couldn't make up for the rice. Sushi rice is supposed to be slightly sticky, not mushy, and have a slight zest from rice wine vinegar. The rice on this particular day was just plain old white rice. Meh. I'll continue to go to Mio for lunch every so often. It's worth it. read more
