It feels strange to write a review of a landfill, or "the dump" as we call it, but after our recent visit, I had a few things that I wanted to share. Now, I have been to the landfill with my husband a few times over the years, usually when we have furniture to get rid of that is too damaged to see or donate. Our most recent visit was about two weeks ago. Our old patio furniture was disintegrating, and we had discolored cushions to get rid of. We tried to figure our a less bothersome or costly way to get rid of it, but, alas, we ended up at the landfill. The first thing we noticed was that the price was increased to $69 for cars and pickups. I thought that was super expensive, a large increase from our previous visit. Anyway, the landfill, as you may imagine, it massive. The roads are mostly dirt roads once you get inside. They are hilyl, have speed bumps and ditches. They also wet the roads to keep the dust from being a problem, so we ended up driving through water. You have to watch the signs carefully to figure out where to go. Once we got to to the area to unload, it was unclear where to go. The signs directed us one way, but the other people were unloading on the other side of the mounds of trash. My husband opted to follow the others, which is lucky, as we otherwise would have gotten in the way of the work trucks. At first, the people directing us to unload were no help at all. We had to guess where to pull up. Later, one guy came by and told us that we could just drop the items at the end of the truck and didn't need to move it our into the pile. That was helpful, as we then unloaded very quickly. My husband had lamented that he often ends up with flat tires after going to this landfill. Sure enough, a few days later, he found a screw lodged in his tire. It really could have come from anyway, but that is a rough road and there is lots of junk near the unloading area. I would not recommend going unless you have a truck, as there is no way my car would have made it. All in all, going to the dump is never fun. However, sometimes you just have no other ways to get rid of stuff. read more

I have a camper shell with surf racks. Went to dump some trash from my home, they said my truck was a tier 2 vehicle because I had surf racks, because of that they wanted to charge me $150 as a pose to$70. All because I had personal surf racks on my truck. Completely discriminatory. not A commercial truck just a truck with surf racks, so surfers have to pay $80 more than regular non commercial people just because we have surf racks. Make it make sense. Not to mention the horrible customer service in the office. They told me to remove my racks which are not easy to remove let alone the whole camper. I'm at a loss for words, the. Honestly it's quite hard to review a landfill, but they are still here and it fulfills my needs of the large greenery drop offs and, of course the free mulch and even compost too. This is for City of San Diego residents only, which you must prove upon entry. Also to drop off green clippings, shrubs and trees you will need to prove your residence. One of the few positive things of living in the city limits, like the free trash pickup. There are plans in motion to change this, I have heard. I happen to have occasional access to my friends business' dumpster, which saves me a lot of money. Not sure what they charge now for dumping here but the last time I paid it was $29 for a truckload but I think probably around 10 years ago. The mulch is very clean and of good quality to keep the weeds down. The compost is top notch, very nutrient rich. They ask you how much you plan on taking when you enter, maybe there's a limit to the amount or weight. I work in Kearny Mesa which is not too far from here and I'm surprised I don't get a whiff of this place occasionally. They have done a great job of controlling this, and I think now all the recycling being done has improved the landfill in general so it can last much longer for us. What a dump... This place is great to pick up free mulch or compost. All you need is a San Diego license and you are good to go. You can dump green waste, and trash. Also there is a recycling center to return cans or metal objects. You can also pay to leave large appliances like refrigerators They also employ people from the Alpha Project. I think they definitely need more than one person up at the window to handle transactions when the lines get extremely long. For whatever reason I had one guy in front of me that took 25 minutes. Looks like they were doing form fillings and thumb prints and photo IDs? Maybe it's a state law requirement that he was turning in precious metals, a.k.a. catalytic converter's or copper pipes? Either way, you should not let the clients or customers wait for that length of time to be assisted. read more

Can't comment on the bottle recycling and pricing, but the lines were long. Probably about 20min wait (inside your car) on a Saturday afternoon. We went to drop off some metal beams leftover from a home reno project and was on the same line. There were people directing traffic, so it was pretty organized. We then went further into the landfill hoping to drop off a door slab that had no hardware on it. There is a checkpoint where you have to pay first, and get a receipt before you can drop off the items or pick up compost/mulch. No wait over here. I thought the door would be considered "wood" and therefore be free, but the lady at the checkpoint told me that it is considered "demolition materials" so would be $30. Pretty pricey considering the slab was not even worth that much, but she told us it would be more worthwhile if you have a whole truckload of materials since that would only cost $60, so we decided to save the slab disposal for later after a couple more reno projects. We did get a slip for free compost, though. We drove further to the greenery and right up to the mounds of compost with our shovel and plastic bins ready. You are allowed 2 cubic yard of 4" compost if you load yourself but I really did not see anyone around to keep track, so it's more by honor system, but for a home gardener you really don't need that much. For a small fee, about $5-34 per cubic yard, you can buy different types of compost and mulch at larger quantity and have them loaded into your vehicle. Be prepared for the dust on the drive up and with the shoveling. One should be wearing a mask nowadays anyway ;) read more

Wow, that was easy and fun. I had to get rid of a piece of furniture that had outlived its useful life and couldn't be given away or sold. My options were to put its pieces in the regular trash over several weeks; arrange a special pickup with our trash hauler; or get it over with in one trip to the Miramar Landfill. I chose the latter, it made for a fun mini-adventure and I renewed my man-card. Located where Convoy dead ends just north of the 52, I found the signs confusing and wasn't quite sure where to go. I stopped at the recycling center to see if my load could be recycled. No dice - off to the landfill. I stopped at the weigh station, described my payload and paid the fee. The flat rate per carload pricing was annoying because I only had one item (although it was taken apart) but at least the pricing was transparent and unambiguous. The attendant told me where to go, I drove up the paved and then the dirt road, backed up into the dropoff spot, removed my cargo and left for home. read more

I had my first visit here over the weekend. We had a lot of miscellaneous items to get rid of, mostly furniture and household items. Based on my experience, upon entry, they ask you what you are throwing away, quickly look at what's inside your truck load, and have you pay based on the size of your vehicle. We had an oldschool 86 Chevy S10, and we were charged $38. You just follow the signs based on what items you have, you back up the truck, and just start pushing everything off. And that's it, you're done! And of course with any landfill, you have to expect it to be dusty, dirty and smelly. Although it honestly wasn't AS bad as I was expecting it to be. But while the giant bulldozers are pushing stuff around, a lot of debris is flying around, so I would suggest wearing goggles before you get some stuff in your eyes, like I did. Overall, it was quick and easy trip, although prices are slowly going up. read more

I went to the recycle today 10.24.20 it was busy as usual. I had 5 barrels of plastic bottles and 1 barrel of aluminum cans. After weighing everything out, I realized they didn't give the accurate amount of barrels, they claimed I had 4 barrels. After explaining what happened, they reimbursed me only a couple dollars. All my other barrels were at least $5.00 on up. I also had Sunny-D bottles that are a different type of plastic and they did not even pay out for that. It is a CA-CRV. Double check your barrels and the bottles that say CA-CRV. read more

Great place to dump your junk and your stress!! Make sure you get here BEFORE 4pm or so... that's the last time you can manually dump your junk. Here's the process: 1) As you enter, they weigh your car. 2) Pay 3) Follow the signs to the dumping area 4) Look for a guy to tell you where to park 5) Back your truck up toward the center of the dumping area 6) RE-leeeeease! 7) Have fun and start throwing away all your stuff. I thought it was fun to also let go of some stress. You can throw your stuff anywhere toward the center of the dumping area. So, go for it! read more

Just picking up some mulch and waited 45 minutes to get in. Please consider having a pile of compost and a pile mulch (for residents that only take a small amount) near the recycling center to alleviate some of the traffic into the dump. Why does it take so long to get in???? read more

After accumulating a driveway full of left over plastic, wood and sand bags worth absolutely nothing, I decided it was time to take a trip to the dump. But this is no dump. It's hidden a little north past Balboa Avenue on Convoy. Almost too discrete. I never knew it was there until I entered the gate and weigh station. I followed a curvy road for about a mile to a place were i got to have the fun of a do it yourself drop off. Very little smell and actually very clean. For someone who fancies themselves as a do-it yourself dumper this is the place. And please, just pay the money and stop dumping your trash on the side of the street in front of my house. Seriously, this place is a dump! However, it's a well-run dump. When you first enter, you have to pass the toll-both to pay for whatever you are dumping or picking up. I went there to get some compost and mulch for our yard. If you are a San Diego resident, this is free for up to 1 cubic yard (which is a lot), but since I live in Poway, one cubic yard of both cost me $13. By the way, 1 cubic yard of red or black woodchips is $18 (Beating out Home Depot prices easily). The Landfill is huge, but has easy to follow signs. The grenery section is thankfully far away from the actual dump, so there is no stink issues (besides compost). The compost/mulch is made over a 10 week period, without burning (which means it may have weeds in there), and you need to bring a shovel. We didn't, but there were lots of friendly people to borrow from. I would give it 5 stars, but since I'm not familiar with other comparable landfills, I'll have to adjust the rating after I visit more, if ever. You know what's strange? Well, stranger than doing a review for a landfill, that is...No, what's strange is finding a landfill that doesn't smell like a landfill. Seriously - we've been to a couple around the county, and it takes an entire bottle of Febreeze to get the stank out of the seats, once we leave. Nasty. So, we're (finally) clearing out of our storage unit, and realized that we've been paying to store a ton of things that could really be donated, and even more things that should be taken to the dump. Miramar Landfill is close to our storage facility, so we went rolling up one Saturday morning to get rid of the things that were broken, useless, or rendered useless by the water damage they received while in our storage unit (yeah, that'll be a part of my review for them, you can be sure). There were only three booths open when we got there, but the lines were moving pretty quickly. The gentleman working the booth we pulled up to was incredibly friendly and happy - who's that happy working on at a dump on a beautiful Saturday morning? But, seriously - this guy joked with us and answered our questions, took our money ($30 for our carload), then sent us on our merry way. I'll admit I had no idea how big this landfill was. I mean, we were driving for miles before we got to the point where we could park the car to unload our stuff. I did like that they have different dumping spots for different kinds of items - so your greenery will be dumped in one place, cardboard items in another, and so on. I think that helped minimize the stank. We got to the end of the bumpy dirt road, and saw that there were a ton of trucks already lined up to relieve their loads. We quickly found a spot to pull in, and had our car emptied within minutes. It really was a painless, quick experience - much different than what we've had in the past. And, I will say that I appreciate that they don't require you to wear a hard hat. We'll definitely be back - probably this weekend - with one more (final) load of crap to dump. And please don't dump crap into gutters/sewers. Use the landfill services!!! They have recycling centers that are free, right at the entrance. If you have yard trimmings, take them to the landfill for free. Just bring proof that you are a property owner in SD County. Driving license will work. Yard waste is free if you are an sd resident but i was a bit shocked at how expensive it was to dump our old bed frame.....$37. Doesn't seem like much but that is pretty pricey, it is only filled up my tacoma truck bed about half full. I would only go here for yard waste which is free to dump or if i needed to get rid of something in a hurry. read more

Forget the smell upon arrival. If you live within a certain area code you are more then welcome to come here and get free mulch and compost. Try to come early because this place gets very busy. I love using my empty dog food bags because they are large and durable! If you have a truck you can get it loaded for you for a small fee. This place is awesome. I've been to this landfill more times than I'd like to admit. I've been helping my parents fix one of their rental properties (no longer a rental) that the previous tenant trashed. Buried trash, loads of paint and other hazardous waste, etc. We've had to tear down some walls and other things. So, we've modified our pick up truck to make "walls" so that when we go into the dump we pay by weight rather than per load (and to fit more into the truck for less trips). As of Today, or maybe yesterday, the per load fee no matter if you have a single mattress or a full modified pickup load is $36. No wonder you see so many discarded mattresses on the street! Who would want to pay 36 dollars for dumping it when, if you had a truck with manufactured sides, it'd be super cheap. We rented a trailer once to haul the trash, only to find out that it had rained the day before so no trailers were allowed in (despite having a large 4wheel drive that would most certainly not have any issues in the "mud"). That was an awful day since the trailer was rented and we didn't have much options. Let's just say we pulled off the road and made three trips in, filling all the trailer trash into the truck bed. That day sucked. Thanks for the warning land fill. The most recent drama is that out of the blue (seriously was there three days earlier with no sign or anything), they decided to stop allowing modified pick up trucks to weigh in and out (instead of paying $20 we now pay the flat $36 no matter what the load is), stopped taking tile refuse, and stopped taking dry wall and roofing refuse. WHAT?? Where the heck are you supposed to dispose of any kind of construction waste? No warning, no alternative suggestions on disposal. The landfill is encouraging people to engage in illegal dumping. Also the recycling center is great for getting rid of old TV's, but don't try to recycle (or dump) a washer or dryer. They won't take them in recycling and will not allow you to dump them in the landfill. What's a girl to do when her dryer breaks? They said call around there are some companies that will take it for recycling. Again, encouraging people to just leave crap on the streets. Batteries, don't even start me on batteries. Don't put them in the trash. I get it, I don't want to ruin the earth either, but where the heck do you dispose of them? Looking online, there are so few places that will take your batteries, and then on top of that you are paying fees. Again with the encouraging people to put them in the trash. So, if the city turns you away with things you are trying to properly dispose of, what are your options? PS. The Saturday hazardous waste disposal is different. I went last Saturday with all that paint I mentioned before. I made an appointment and when I drove up they were some of the most lovely people. I was greeted with a smile by all the folks working there. So 5 stars for the Saturday hazardous waste disposal. Someone has it right. PPS. The Miramar Greenery is pretty good too. read more

An appointment is required and it is free to most San Diego Residents as far as I am aware! The process was painless: 1) Schedule appointment 2) Go to said appointment with car fully loaded with toxic paint, etc. 3) Drive up to location and follow designated signs 4) Follow directions 5) Maintain in car while excellent workers unload it 6) Leave and grab a bite to eat on Convoy! It could not be any simpler than that and I wish I went here sooner to get rid of all that junk that you cannot safely and legally toss in the trash can and dispose of it there. read more

I used to hate going to the dump... Until I visited Mirimar Landfill. They are usually very quick to get you in and unloaded. I have never popped a tire there. The greenery takes yard waste for free and turns it into compost and mulch. That is an awesome project that more dumps should employ. read more

Took 100- 64 oz. plastic juice bottles up on Saturday. We crushed them to get them into two-50 gallon black trash bags full. The guy checking the recyclables said he would NOT pay us for the .10 cents a bottle because the "Old Orchard 100% Juice" Bottles had no CA redemption mark on the label. We save receipts to verify that we were in fact charged TEN CENTS per each bottle at the store, yet these guys said to leave the bottles there WITHOUT adding them to the receipt. Is this stealing? Also, these guys charge $25 per unit for washer/ dryer/ refrigerator recycling, yet other places give YOU money to take them as they are weighted as scrap metal. you might find a better place to dump unwanted trash and goods but you'll spend the rest of your life looking. The dirt roads are so smooth I never bother with a coffee cup lid. warning!! san diego citizens cannot use miramar landfill until further notice --- no cash, credit cards, debit cards, or checks are accepted. you must apply for a deferred payment account and agree to pay a minimum of $84 per month and/or $250 per quarter! even if you only want to dump one car or pickup load! these are the same permits that large haulers like waste management must purchase. if you do not meet the quarterly minimum of $250 they will cancel your account. to get the deferred payment account you must purchase a $250 bond from an outside for profit bondsman -- my friend was quoted $100 per year to establish the bond (i have not verified this amount personally) -- just another example of how the mayor and council think of taxpayers -- except when it comes time to ask for our votes. this is from the miramar website: "at this time, the miramar landfill and greenery will not be accepting cash, checks or credit card transactions. customers interested in using the landfill and greenery must establish an account online through the city's deferred payment account services webpage.to learn more about setting up an account, visit the dpa services webpage." read more

We took a basic trip to the landfill. The cost has gone up from $36 to $42 for a pick up load. The attendent was friendly and helpful with not too much of a wait. read more
