Needlework isnt something that I am personally interested but I easily found the perfect gift and a look around the shop certainly captured my imagination. I recall coming in here in a massive fluster, wanting a dress altered for a big formal event that I had coming up. In my usual disorganised fashion, I'd left it completely to the last minute, but rather than eyeing me with a look of hostile, we've not got time for this qualities, one of the experienced members of the stitching empire whisked me through to the back to pin my dress in the right places, and in reassuring tones, told me not to worry. I should still be more organised though. Anyway, Stitches has never let me down in the alteration department, and I'm always confident they'll come up with the goods. Aside from alterations, they also do tailoring, dressmaking and drycleaning.

She and I corresponded for a bit and not only was her quote incredibly reasonable, I thought she seemed absolutely lovely. I sent her some ideas and she posted me a few different fabric ideas she had. Meeting and communicating with her was not only easy, but so much fun. She produced for me a dress which I have worn on every special occasion since, and which I have received compliments on every time. Just this past weekend I was visting friends at whose wedding I was able to wear my dress. The bride's mother was up visiting and when I met her again this weekend she said to me "you probably don't remember me, but I remember when we met you were wearing the most amazing tartan dress." Lynne's dress was so amazing that the bride's own mother (who is a dressmaker) remembered it, two years later. If that isn't an outstanding endorsement, I don't know what is.

In my case, it's usually to help me out of those times when I buy something way too big just because it's so gorgeous and on sale, only to get home and realise that no amount of safety pinning is ever going to make it look good on. And not being an artsy-craftsy type, I definitely don't alter things myself. Although Stitch Master just along the street is much cheaper, Tailor Stop is specifically a clothing alterations place rather than a generic 'anything that's sewable' place. My stuff was ready the next day, so I can't fault the efficiency of it, but I only gave it 4 stars as there's no getting around the fact that it's a bit pricey. Paying almost £10 just to get the straps on a dress shortened was a bit annoying. If only I'd paid attention when they were teaching us how to sew at school. I'd be loaded by now.

The old lady also said a button needed moving and shoulders adjusted. When I picked jacket up I was horrified to see a mark on front, one sleeve lying at an angle, puckering and large stitching. I pointed out she was the one screaming, not me and suggested she review her cctv to examine her behaviour. There were more insults and terrible behaviour from her but not enough space to list. I am taking her to Small Claims Court for the £595 jacket she has ruined.

One of the rare occasions where laziness trumps Yelp reviews…read more.. Even though Orange Seamstress is right around the corner from me, I usually trek my clothes needing alterations into town because I tend to follow which spot has the most/best reviews. Orange Seamstress had only one review and a one star at that, so it would general fall into my "no fly zone" category. Not saying that one review is always a full representation of a place, but that I generally lean towards places that I know will be consistent. In this rare case, i'm glad I didn't and that laziness got the best of me. Because my usual tailor is in town and I have the memory of a flea, the pile of clothes needing to be patched has been growing for a few months. Most notably in the mix, is my winter coat, which wasn't a big deal until the weather started turning, my little jean jacket wasn't cutting it - I needed my coat to be in working order. The alterations, though many, were pretty basic and for the ease in just having to walk around the corner, I thought i'd give Orange Seamstress a go and hope for the best. I shall be depositing the whole lot there tomorrow. I went in with the coat which needed a few new buttons, a patch on one of the button holes, and multiple patches in the lining. The lady behind the counter pinned everything up, quoted me a very reasonable £24 and asked if I could pick up on Friday. Because it says "one hour service" on the sign, I asked if I could come in earlier and she said: "Of course - you can do same day if needed." I opted to pick it up the day after and right on cue, when I walked in today, my coat was ready to go, everything looked good on inspection and I prompted ran it back across the street to be cleaned. I'm going to save that last star for when I have a better sense of how the patches withhold wear and tear, but for speed, price and convenience, i'll be back here again. Heck, I'm heading there in an hour with a few skirts that need adjustments. Stockbridge folks: it's worth the gamble! Cash only.

I had to wait a little longer than normal due to a mix-up in what order jobs were being done in, but only a minute when they actually got done. It did cost me just under £15 for 3 keys though which feels steep, but perhaps is average.
