After a few hair horrors in suburban salons, you can safely say I'm a little afraid to get my hair…read moredone in a local. So, it took a lot of courage for me to go to Sublime at my nearby Westfield. But, following my rule that you can usually tell how good a salon will be by how good the staff's hair looks, I felt quite relieved when I was greeted at the reception desk by a girl with the coolest, sharpest bob in a delicious, dip-dyed reds. I knew I'd be in safe hands. Plus my Mum is a regular and they cut her hair beautifully. I was only having my bob subtly trimmed, but I was still treated like royalty. And I liked the atmosphere - it was buzzy, fun and nicely lit (so much more flattering to my complexion!), with a chic black and white interior. Even though I had a first rate experience, there's still a little of the salon snob in me, so I'm not sure I'd be ready to take the plunge and have a drastic revamp here. But for a tidy up or a blow dry for a special occasion, I'd definitely be back.

I get greeted by name on arrival without them looking me up, taken straight to a seat and offered any style of coffee, juice, water etc before quickly being indulged in a pressure point massage. My stylist asks how I'm going to change my hair again this time before washing my hair, giving me a head massage while conditioning it ...all of which is done on an electric massage chair. By this stage I'm ready to fall asleep but I get whisked back to my chair while they snip, chop and whizz my hair into a versatile, manageable and perfect haircut! I'm sure il be returning for many years to come!

The cons usually win. My first impression, when booking my appointment over the phone, was not the best. I work full-time and like to book my appointments a fair way in advance (particularly when using vouchers) in order to secure the most suitable appointment time I can get. Vee Cee's advertised open hours on Saturdays and until late on Thursdays, so I asked for one of these times, and was promptly told that those hours were reserved for regulars. All of them. I ended up having to take an hour and a half off work one afternoon in order to use my voucher. As far as sticks and carrots go, way to use a stick to encourage me to become a regular! Despite the voucher having conditions, I was asked when I called up what I wanted done. Why didn't they save this question for when I came in? The only thing I could think was that they were trying to find out how long my appointment would need - despite there already being conditions to the deal. Looking for an upsell already? Anyway, I went with it and asked if the half-head of foils in the deal could be used in clumps, to create bigger block sections of foil colour, rather than evenly dispersed. I made the mistake of mentioning the word balayage, which did not go down well at ALL. I finally booked in for my appointment but wasn't looking forward to it. Still, I'd already paid my money for my deal. Vee Cee's is in one of those suburban clusters of shops with a small amount of off-street parking, which is nice. It's definitely one of your typical suburban hairdressers, which I wasn't expecting based on the voucher write-up (but I'm growing more and more wary of them). Some of my anxiety was allayed when I met the stylist, because she seemed really lovely. We discussed what I was looking for and it seemed to be received well - but then the young colourist got to have his turn and while trying to achieve what I wanted, it didn't really work at all. It's worked fine at other places in the past. He was very unsure of what he was doing. Also, hairdressers? Don't advertise head massages unless you're actually going to do more than squeeze my scalp a couple of times. The cut was fine (it was just a trim), the interactions were fine. I let the stylist upsell me some shampoo and conditioner because I was almost out and it seemed good. I was charged an extra $10 on top of the deal because of my "long" hair (it touches my shoulders?) - despite the fact that I only had around 1/4-head worth of foils on my hair in the end. Oh, and the "gourmet biscuit" that was advertised to come with my complimentary cappuccino? One of those plastic-wrapped hotel-type sugar biscuits. Spare me.

I made sure to book in for a couple of months in advance, to be courteous, and easily secured a Saturday morning appointment. I was definitely happy with my half-head of foils, my style cut and my eyelash & brow tint - it's good to know that free lash/brow tints have a tendency of cropping up as one of the freebies available for Facebook followers (just show the girls Facebook on your phone). As well as being a hairdressing salon, some of the girls at Bounce also offer massage, tanning, waxing, facials, manis/pedis, and makeup packages. Nice coverage. Back to my morning, though. While I was sitting around looking like a cyborg (half head of foils), the most preposterous cow of a customer I've ever encountered in my life came in and let rip at one of the girls. I can't remember the exact details now because it was a couple of months ago, but this woman clearly didn't get things to go the way she wanted and had come back in for a second round of arguing, this time bringing her beefy boyfriend in to stand around and look threatening while she threw insults and threats at this employee (in plain sight of current customers, including me)... who took it all on the chin, spoke calmly and evenly, never one raised her voice in retaliation, and should have received a hero's medal. I was truly impressed at how the situation was handled. Bounce has excellent regular specials for their facebook followers (e.g. recently - free blowdry, 10% off ALL products, free manicure), and for those signed up to their mailing list. You can book your appointment online via their website, or call up. (Actually, their online booking doesn't appear to be working at the moment. Awkward.) As well as all that, Bounce also has WiFi, which is not something you often see hairdressers advertising. You're also entitled to the ol' standard coffee while you're getting yur hurr did, grrl.
