I had an incurable circadian rhythm disorder called Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS). I was going through life as if jet-lagged, every day of every year. I thought that chelation was the key, so I looked for naturopaths who did chelation. I chose Dr. Greider partly because he specialized in complex cases. Being Swiss, Dr. Greider has knowledge of treatment options used in Europe and not used here, for various reasons. So right away, he thought of a protocol that we could try. Sure enough, it worked! He also helped me get rid of the dull feeling in my forehead, and to think more clearly. This happened in May and June. This September, I was able to work on a farm, and wake up before dawn, without an alarm clock, and fall asleep at 9 or 10 pm. This was a dream come true for me. I would rather have experienced this than romantic love. Dr. Greider changed my life. I delayed in seeing Dr. Greider for a few years because he was more expensive than other naturopaths. After all, he has a team of awesome nurses and office staff working with him. But in the end, it was probably the best money I ever spent in my life. There is something fundamentally broken about the operations at this practice, and in particular, with the front desk staff. It would be nice if the staff ever (and I mean EVER) picked up the phone. I don't believe that their phone ringer is ever on. EVER. Their "you've reached us after business hours" message is on at all hours of the day. But when you're in the office, there are 2 front desk staff at all times, chatting away merrily. The outgoing voicemail message makes it clear that staff prefer patients to message rather than call, which is fine, but their inevitable response to a written message is to "wait until your next appt" or "call us." And so the circle continues. If you have given up on reaching a live human, or receiving a helpful written message response, and decide to leave a voicemail, you can rest assured that it enters a black hole. The staff don't return voicemails - ever. When your doctor explicitly tells you "reach out to the staff to get this process going ASAP," or "please contact us ASAP if any of these things happen," it is highly problematic that front desk staff are either inept, unmotivated, or unconcerned about the business of office and medical operations. Sometimes matters need to be addressed faster than 8 weeks from now. My pharmacist has been trying to reach the office for 4 weeks to clarify a prescription. Like me, the pharmacist cannot reach a live human, and voice messages go unreturned. This is not the first time this has happened. In the meantime, I am unable to access the prescription my doctor wants me to begin. The doctors might be there to serve patients, but the administrative staff isn't. And doctors, if you take your patients' care seriously, you need to do something about your administrative staff - quickly. read more

I wish I had found Dr Grieder years ago! It would have saved me so much time, heartache, false diagnoses, failed medical interventions, and medical trauma. Dr.Grieder is an incredibly intelligent, kind, empathetic, and accomplished physician. He takes detailed notes, really listens to patients, and makes medical documentation that has caused multiple nurses, doctors, and medical professionals to call me just to gush to me over the phone about what an incredible and professional physician he is. He has made miracles happen with my insurance that I didn't believe possible because of his in-depth medical knowledge, attention to detail, and dedication to his patients and his work. When I approached Dr.Grieder I was at my wits end, I had (and have) an incredibly complex and difficult case, I've had more than one doctor turn me down for being "too complex", and had been running into so many medical and insurance roadblocks that my health journey had ground almost to a standstill. I'd tried paying out-of-pocket for expensive doctors before and had some horrible experiences with little to no results or positive changes to my health. When I approached Dr.Grieder's office it was about starting IVIG treatment which none of my other specialists felt qualified to evaluate or prescribe and weren't interested in fighting my insurance over. I presented the research I had gathered about IVIG and it's efficacy in treating a few of my conditions and instead of finding a reluctant physician, I found an eager advocate who not only knew more than I did about IVIG, but was already administering it to patients like me with a documented history of positive results! Dr. Grieder made me feel heard, seen, and hopeful about making progress toward health for the first time in years. As a chronically ill and disabled person who struggles to keep up with medical expenses I have to be so careful about the financial decisions I make around my health. Investing in adding Dr. Grieder on my care team has been worth every penny I've scrimped and saved and more! In fact, having him on my care team has made many of my treatments MORE affordable because he has been able to medically justify expensive medications to my medical insurance and has been willing to work directly with my insurance's medical review doctor and staff to make it happen. Having Dr.Grieder on my care team has been life saving not just for me, but for my other doctors and medical team members. He has removed a huge portion of the medical admin from my primary care physician who is wonderful but extremely over-worked and understaffed. Knowing that Dr. Grieder is on my team has strengthened our professional relationship and freed her up from enough medical admin to have the emotional and physical energy to reinvest back into my care. If you're thinking about adding Dr. Grieder to your care team I cannot recommend him highly enough! Finding a doctor who actually listens, who recognizes that YOU are the expert in your own body, and who takes your symptoms seriously is rare enough. In all my years of medical treatment, having been poked and prodded by 100+ doctors & surgeons, finding a physician that can help you think creatively about your chronic illness, who has the depth and breadth of knowledge to not give up when something doesn't work the first time, to know where to find answers and be willing to come up with new solutions to move your health in a positive direction, THAT is the rarest gift of all! read more

Dr.Grieder is hands down the best doctor I have ever seen. That's saying a lot because I've seen 30+ doctors over the years and am a complex case, what with my Lyme, extreme fatigue, neuropathy...the list goes on. 3 years ago, I had virtually given up on finding a good doctor. Most of the doctors I had previously seen either didn't know how to help me, were disbelieving of the severity of my symptoms, or focused too narrowly on their one particular specialty and therefore couldn't connect the dots between my many symptoms. Dr.Grieder is different. He listens attentively, shows a genuine interest and compassion I haven't found with any other doctor, is whip smart with a knowledge of both breadth and depth, and my personal favorite thing about him - he talks to me like a PEER. I'm a geek who enjoys learning as much as possible about my conditions and my treatment options, so I'm more knowledgeable than most patients walking in. This means that doctors either tend to love me or hate me. Your average doctor that just wants to speed through an appointment and gets testy when a patient dares to ask "Why?" or "But would treatment X work better?" That kind of doctor hates me! I ask too many questions. I dare question their word! Dr.Grieder, on the other hand, indulges the geek in me and it's not uncommon for us to get excited during an appointment, discussing the science behind a new treatment option or the latest research on ME/CFS. =) In the same vein, Dr.Grieder works WITH me to create a treatment plan. Previous doctors just told me what to do, writing a prescription and then pushing me out the door. Tip: if you call the office and it goes to voicemail, leave a message. I read all of the other reviews before writing this one. I feel like anything I write has already been said--all the good things are entirely true. Dr Grieder is a uniquely good doctor. He is smart, attentive, professional, patient, curious. He's also thoughtful and compassionate. This combination is rare, and ideal for the type of illnesses people would go to him for. Chronic or refractory issues, complex health issues that groups of specialists can't find a through-line for. He's a very focused listener, and really makes the patient a partner in their treatment. He will take the time to explain the broader picture--both in diagnosis and treatment--and will listen without ego to questions, reservations or the patient's own ideas. This is really rare--many doctors, even good ones, really don't let you express concerns, ask critical questions or bring new ideas into the mix. He works deftly with both standard western medicine and alternative practices, and is practical and realistic about the use and balance of different treatment modalities. I believe he is always striving to know more, learn more and broaden his scope in order to be a better doctor--both intellectually and with communication/connection with his patients. I've seen and known him for 8 years. I have seen very sick patients of his improve and recover. I've routinely seen him go way above the norm for patients--including myself. He doesn't give up on people. He also works with other doctors and practitioners without the kind of resistance I seemed to get from other doctors. I never felt like I was trying to manage ego issues between specialists when that became part of my treatment. I wrote this because I have a difficult illness to manage and treat. I think it's a common experience for many to get ill with something poorly understood or undiagnosed--real things--and find yourself not finding help, not taken seriously or just going in circles of being sent from doctor to doctor with no unifying thread. It's a hard point to find yourself in. I felt pretty lost and invalidated--though some real things had gone very wrong, and nobody else had looked where he did. I think many people who would come to this Yelp page would be seeking out someone just like Dr Grieder. To listen, hear them, believe--and then begin doing practical, experienced steps to try to get their life back. That's certainly what I was looking for when I found him. I read the reviews from a couple years ago about administrative issues. Having seen him for so long, I know that was an anomaly and his current staff is both excellent and a pleasure to deal with. I want to echo the other 5 star reviewers. I've been meaning to write this review since I first discovered Dr. Grieder, but I wanted the exhilaration and appreciation to wear off a little before I did. Well, 4 years down the road and it hasn't, so here I am! I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in 2006, 8 years after I contracted it, when I finally came upon a Lyme literate doctor on the East Coast. I had been through all the standard treatments when I moved to CA-- intravenous antibiotics, cocktails of oral antibiotics, etc. but I wasn't feeling significantly better. My Kaiser/Blue Cross docs have been deaf to even the existence of Chronic Lyme, and had instead diagnosed me with Lupus, MS, then "oops you don't have those, you have fibromyalgia, go join a support group for people who think they are hurting." Ugh. So when I came to CA I knew I had to find another naturopath. No, insurance didn't cover it but I have found that the dedicated, tailored care is worth it, even if you only go for a few months to get on a protocol. Evidence of Dr. Grieder's receptivity to patients and his willingness to try innovative and cutting edge treatments: when I first saw him I told him the only time I felt significantly better was when I took malaria meds to go overseas. He instantly knew why, and put me on a combination of a type of quinine and antibiotics, which decreased my load of the organism significantly. After that plateau, we did the Buhner protocol, ozone treatment, and different vitamins that he suggested that have drastically improved my symptoms. I am now in a semi-remission and credit Dr. Grieder for helping me get there. He will not give up! He can also prescribe antibiotics or other drugs if need be and is well informed about all sorts of immunological and endocrinological issues. In short (no this is not short, sorryt!) I have been working with Dr. Grieder on and off since 2017. I have been dealing with a complex chronic illness for over 3 years now! I suddenly developed many health issues but no one seems to know the cause of it all. Unfortunately no doctor has yet been able to help me or they are very quick to give up when I don't respond to treatments. Dr. Grieder hasn't given up yet! Even though I'm still searching for answers, he has played a HUGE role in helping me look for those answers. He has always been very kind, responsive to emails and will order any labwork or other tests that may be necessary in order to help his patients. I would also like to include that Sarah and Jim (both nurses) have been wonderful to work with! They are both great at what they do. read more

(This review is "not recommended" by yelp, but it's a real review by a real former client. I keep a separate yelp account for my medical reviews because these experiences are personal and I don't want my friends and family reading about them.) I think I might have started seeing Dr. Grieder at the wrong time. He was remodeling the clinic (and overhauling clinic procedures) at the time, and I found him to be somewhat distracted during my visits. I didn't feel like he reviewed my chart from visit to visit, which is important in connecting the dots when dealing with complex cases. So, although he spent adequate time on the initial intake and asked good questions, I didn't feel like the information he gleaned from that first visit shed any light on the follow-up visits. I felt that my progress was slow, certain underlying causes for my symptoms were missed, and that the treatment sequencing was possibly out of order. Dr. Grieder is smart, knowledgeable, and personable -- 3 stars for that -- but in moving on I found a different doctor who's more attuned to what's going on with me. I feel that the potential is there with this doctor, but I wasn't as lucky as the other reviewers here. read more

First off: I hated doctors. I was highly skeptical of even a visit for a cold. I would avoid doctor offices even if I had sprained limbs. Thankfully I am gaining my confidence back. Having a hard time speaking to a person in the office. I have placed 13 phone calls and left a few messages and still no contact. Today I called 11 times and kept getting sent directly to vm. One time the phone was picked up (heard people in the office) and hung up. This is not reflection of the medical maybe just need better office staff. I have had autoimmune issues for over 35 years (since I was 15 years old) and had become severely debilitated from them about 4 years ago. In the past, I was a very social person with a job I loved, but I had to quit my job and barely was able to leave my house. I was in constant pain and had terrible brain fog. My conventional Drs were very compassionate, but they didn't know what to do with me anymore. They said it is just what happens when someone has had autoimmune issues as long as I have had them. My insurance company had an RN start calling me weekly to check up on me. She told me that 90% of people at my stage of my diseases were completely bed bound, and that I needed to fill out an Advance Directive before things progressed any further. I thought there had to be something better, so I made an appointment with a Functional MD at Sutter Gould in Sacramento. She told me she thought I had Lyme Disease, and that it was the root cause of my autoimmune diseases. She also told me that was beyond her area of expertise and gave me a list of Drs she believed could help me. Dr Grieder was the first one on that list that had an appointment available. I started seeing him almost two years ago, and he has done wonders for me! I feel like I have my life back; I started working part time again, and have returned to most of my usual activities. I can hike and bike again. I maybe can't do everything I want to do, but I can do anything I want to do, and that is amazing!! Yes, it was expensive at first. Many tests were ran because that is the only way to tell what was going on with me. Some of them were covered by insurance and some were not. Dr Grieder really works with me, and I truly believe the tests and treatments he has ordered have all been completely necessary. He helps me tweak my diet and use the supplements that benefit me the most. He uses a combination of conventional and natural therapies to give me the best possible outcome. I still have to see my conventional Dr at least once a year for my insurance to continue paying for my prescriptions. My conventional Dr is AMAZED at the change in me, and tells me every year to continue with Dr Grieder. So much of my blood work is now in the normal range. My triglycerides, inflammatory markers, and blood sugar all used to be crazy high. As my conventional Dr says, blood work doesn't lie. This treatment is working. We have had to make financial sacrifices for the treatment I've received and am receiving. I am driving a nearly ten-year-old car. My son had to take out a loan for college. Of course, I would have rather my insurance paid for it all, but that wasn't possible, and conventional medicine was no longer working for me. Maintaining my treatment is not nearly so expensive as figuring everything out at first. But it has all been more than worth it. I give Dr Grieder and SFPMG my highest recommendation. They have given me back my quality of life. read more

I was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder on May of 2012. This is a very complex disorder where time plays a huge factor from how long has the person been sick to the point of treating it with the correct approach. I did everything that I could do to follow directions and tracking progress but for some reason I was stagnated in a point where I was not getting better or worse. Dr. Grieder is a wonderful, compassionate naturopath who is willing to combine the best of Western, Eastern, homeopathic... approaches to healing to help his patients get better. I have Lyme and co-infections. I was sick for almost 2 years, getting virtually no help from my GP. Upon finally getting a correct diagnosis I have improved dramatically over the past few years.
