I've had a great deal of experience in this hospital, as a student and a health care provider, and as a family member of a patient. I am not sure I can do this review justice because there are just so many components to a hospital. One very important thing? The majority of the people there, even now with all the crap that's been going on in the Albertan healthcare scene since the early '90s (thank you Ralph Klein and Steve West *spit*), the majority still care and still try to do their best. They still try to connect. I have some concerns about the few who have been affected by the health care cuts, but this would be the same regardless of which institution I was reviewing. Also, I've found some hospitals have units that have high school-like gossip that can affect patient care. This, while a part of human nature, should not occur in health care. I made my concerns known to Patient Relations and I was told to "pick my battles". Parking requires either coins or credit card and you pay for it before you leave the parking lot to go inside, whether it's the emergency parking lot (please only park there if you've someone close to you actually IN the emergency department at the time) or in the much larger much more easily accessible public parking out "out front". And one small piece of advice: Always ask questions, even if you don't know what to ask, you can ask, "what things should I know about my Mom's condition?".

An hour and a half later I woke up feeling dazed and couldn't remember where I was as there were new nurses on shift now.

It is with a broken heart that I write this review. If a zero could be given, it would be what this…read morehospital deserves. My beloved husband was lost to us during his negligent stay at this hospital, specifically Unit 53. Due to contracting COVID, My husband was admitted to the Grey Nuns Hospital on November 30th 2020.. I had no idea that would be the last day that I would touch him, have a face to face conversation, or just be with him. During the course of his stay we, his immediate family, were not allowed to visit with him at all: not in his room, not in the nursing area, not in the common areas, and not outside. Our only contact with him was via telephone. We repeatedly requested the opportunity to have an in person visit, but were repeatedly refused. When we asked why we could not have a single masked family member visit, were were continuously told "it is not allowed". On January 24th 2021, at 2:15 am a CODE BLUE was called. The code team was delayed in arriving to my husbands room, ostensibly "due to a lack of N95 masks near the room". When the code team finally arrived in my husbands room, nurses were at the bedside, However none of them were preforming CPR. The code team initiated chest compressions and the use of a bag valve mask, but to no avail - my husband was gone. HE WAS ALREADY COLD. I have no idea how long my husband may have been in distress prior to passing. I have not received a reasonable explanation as to why it took so long for hospital staff to notice that my husbands heart had stopped. I have not received reasonable explanation as to why my husbands heart rate monitor/alarm had been shut off or inoperative. I have not received a reasonable explanation as to why my husbands body was cold by the time hospital staff arrived and noticed that my husband was still, lifeless, and cold. To their shame, hospital management was allowing family members of other patients in the unit to have IN PERSON patient visits, yet our requests were arbitrarily refused. The chance to hold his hand, have a conversation looking into his eyes, and to hug and kiss him was torn away from me. The scars on my heart feel as though they will never heal. I have NEVER received a reasonable explanation from hospital management as to why we were denied visits while family members of other patients were allowed to do so. Sadly, senior management at the hospital appeared indifferent and callous when this issue was brought to their attention. I do not recommend that you allow your loved ones to be treated at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. If possible, take them to a different hospital where management cares about how patients and their families are treated.

My assigned physiatrist and physiotherapists were not just incompetent; they were destructively lazy. I was a severe case and after the first couple of days, they have written me off. Consequently, myself and another patient, who still had the residual willpower to get better were just nuisances to them. I was specifically and actively discouraged from trying to do anything about my condition. For example, the physiatrist made a special effort to demotivate me. I guess, he would rather see me going in the bed instead of the toilet, as was the case with a few of his other patients I witnessed. The worst part is that such unprofessional conduct was considered normal; when I shared my experience, another 'doctor' merely called it 'bad bedside manners.' I briefly considered suing them, but for what? For incompetence, laziness, medical negligence, or for what it actually was - attempted murder? After all, you don't have to stab someone in the chest to kill them. It's enough to rob them of their will to live. So, my one star review stands for 'slaughterhouse'.

While he was supposed to be here for just a test or two they kept him at the Maz for about a week, because there were some issues. I really liked that the Mazankowski specializes in heart issues, and that the doctors and nurses here weren't just going to do some tests and let my grandfather go home without being certain he would be okay. I came here with my grandmother to visit my grandfather one evening and I was pleasantly surprised at the facilities. The hospital (institute) is clean and well taken care of. The nurses that came by to check on my grandpa and his charts were friendly and professional. The space here is very nice. I mean the hospital rooms are still hospital rooms (can't get too fancy with that), but they have a healing garden on the main floor, which is really nice to go into and I'm sure patients appreciate getting a little greenness into their stay here. They also have free wifi here, which was great. There is a parkade and a pedway, which is probably the easiest way to get in. If you can walk a bit further the LRT (Health Sciences/Jubilee station) is a few blocks away. The Maz isn't a place you want to go to, but if you or someone you know ends up here it's a great health facility, and one I'm happy to see in Edmonton.

It gives me relief knowing that a place like this exists for people like me who have heart issues. My doctor was very informative and (obviously) truly knew what he was talking about.
