    First time paddleboarding!
    Abby W.

I had never been paddleboarding before but I had a friend visiting from out-of-town who loves paddleboarding and really wanted to give it a try in San Diego. We started researching paddleboarding locations and came across Surfari. I was a little hesitant because I know how difficult it can be to find parking in Mission Bay but ultimately decided that the bay seemed like a good spot to give the sport a try since the waters are calm. Luckily, parking wasn't as difficult as I expected, or maybe I just lucked out, but we found a spot within a few blocks of the shop. We checked in around 3 and were told that we had to return the paddleboards by 5:30. Although we hadn't bought the Groupon, they still offered us the Groupon price, which was about $20 each. Since I was a newcomer, they gave me a few quick pointers on dry land and then kindly helped stop traffic along busy Mission Blvd. Then came the most difficult part of the experience: carrying the heavy, awkward board the few blocks along an alley to the beach. There was a small finger hold in the middle of the board but it only allowed for the tips of your fingers to grip the handle. It was extremely difficult to lift and balance the board and I had to stop every ten feet or so to readjust. Granted, I admit that I'm not blessed in the upper body strength department so others may have an easier time but if you're on the weaker side, be prepared! Once we arrived at the peaceful bay and we put the boards in the water, it was much easier. I chickened out on standing up on the board in more than a foot of water but I did practice balancing close to shore. The calm waters make it easy to get your balance but be on the lookout for the occasional waves caused by jet skis. Otherwise, this is a great location to get a feel for paddleboarding. Returning the paddleboard was quick and easy. The shop also has free lockers that you can store your bag inside while you're out on the water and a room for changing in and out of your bathing suit. Basically, my only issue was carrying the board and I wish they had boards that were easier to maneuver. My friend, who is an experienced paddleboarder, thought these paddleboards were more difficult to carry than ones she has used in the past too. But aside from that, I loved the friendliness of the staff and would rent from them again.

Surfari Instructor Gavin, 1.5 hour private lesson. This school is the real deal.

Having 10 years experience as a ski instructor and outdoor guide I was looking for a laid back school with competent adult surf lessons. I can't say enough about Surfari and my instructor Gavin, other than I'd go back again and again. Their 3/2 full length wetsuit made a winter afternoon feel like nothing more than a summer day. Super cool experience the whole way round- see pics for proof! Thanks guys! (photo credits C. Dent)

    Success!

Great place to get surfing lessons. Matt was excellent! My daughter enjoyed a quality lesson and was able to spend a lot of time with Matt. It was clean inside. Extremely friendly. Instructor very patient and fun.

Really had a good time today. The surf was Very high but it was a great challenge. Corey was very kind and patient. Definitely recommend this small surf shop for anybody who wants to learn how to surf. Hope to come back soon.

My five year olds first time surfing.

Ask the Community - Mission Surf Shack

Is there a cart to get the boards to the bay? Or is walking the only option?

Hello Heather. We do not provide a cart. The bay is a 3 minute walk from our location.

She's terrified of the ocean, but I somehow convinced her to go into the Surfari store and book a semi private lesson.

Highly recommend whether you're a local or tourist!! they have group classes for kayaks (2 person…read moreor 1 person), surf lessons and snorkeling lessons. We did the 2 person kayak and originally booked through TripAdvisor but next time, we'll book directly through them after realizing they're a local company. It was around $100 for our 2 person kayak which seemed reasonable for a quick day date. Make sure you're 30 minutes before your booking time so you can check in and get supplies for your activity. For kayaking, it was a 90 min event and it's helpful to wear a swimsuit since you'll get wet and have a chance to swim. They took us through parts by the coast and we got to see lots of different fish and sea lions. Tip; make sure to bring water proof, floating bag for your phone since lockers can be $6 and I wish we would have brought our GoPro for the underwater views. The tour guides Thomas and Spencer were knowledgeable and helpful. We had a few guys who were in our tour that kept going overboard and the guides were patient with them even as the guys got a little annoying with their kayak intentionally tipping a few times. Overall, I'm really glad we went and will be back for other activities with friends and family.

I found out from a friend that I could book kayaks on ClassPass, so I jumped at the opportunity…read more I've been in San Diego for several years, but have not spent much time on the water. The reservation process was easy, and we signed a waiver prior to coming to the shop. The guys at the shop were super friendly and got us oriented to the water quickly. We had a 10:15 am reservation and they were not busy at that time. My only small gripe is that I wish their website had more information about what to wear to go kayaking. They had wetsuits for rent and waterproof pouches for sale, but my friend and I made do with what we wore, and we were ok. This may be very obvious to people who kayak, but for newcomers like me, you need to walk into the ocean to get into your kayak, so you will at minimum get wet from the waist down. You get your life jackets at the shop, then walk a block down to the ocean where there are more employees that get you set up with the kayak. The worker at the beach reinforced what the guys at the shop told us, pointing out lifeguards and landmarks in the water, before showing us how to paddle. Once we were ready, he dragged our kayak out into the surf and held it steady as we climbed in. With a strong shove, we were off! Our rental was for 1.5 hours and we had a really good time! Despite never kayaking before, we quickly figured out how to paddle and steer, and even as two girls with noodle arms, there was less resistance than expected. We thought we would end before our scheduled time was up, but we found ourselves floating and vibing till the last minute. It was really fun being rushed on shore by the waves, and I was sad to get off the kayak. I checked the price online if I were to rent from them directly, and it was about $45 for a double kayak. I wish they would just list their prices directly on their website, instead of requiring us to click in to the reservations page and seeing the price upon checkout. Maybe they do different pricing at different times. Still, I would definitely check for a Groupon or something, and do this activity again.
