Well I have heard this place was great, based on the reviews it probably is, based on what I ordered not so much. In hind site I probably should have ordered a sub at a sub shop, but I saw Gyro and got excited. I'm from Chicago and still on the search for a good Gyro here. so I ordered it with the hand cut fries to share with my BF. He ordered the Philly Cheese Steak. I opened the paper and said "That's it?" The Gyro was awful, I could tell it was just generic frozen meat slices they are buying from who knows where, only 3 maybe four little mushy slices, the Tzatziki Sauce is always my favorite part if it is good, it was not. The pita was not grilled or toasted and felt a bit rubbery. The hand cut fries were very fresh but were soggy, no crisp at all. Again, I probably ordered the wrong item. In my opinion they need to remove it from the menu all together, if its there just to have it whats the point? The menu is huge and it will not be missed, If your gonna make something, make it good! My BF said his sandwich was good, although too much Mayo was on it and he wished there were more peppers. The bread left more to be desired. The things I did enjoy was the greasy spoon feel of the place, the girls at the counter were all very nice, the ice tea was great and the cookies were wonderful. I know they are not home made since I asked the girl if they make the cookies themselves and she said no we bake them ourselves. Either way I had White Chocolate Macadamia Nut and it was wonderful! I moved to Great Bridge about two years ago. Mr. Jims apparently has been here forever and from all accounts has been consistently serving quality subs and other food items for the entirety of it's existence. This place lives up to the hype, for the most part. Being born and raised in VA Beach, I've been eating Zero's subs for most of my life. To me, there are a lot of similarities between Zero's and Mr. Jims. The bread rolls they use are very similar, as are the types of cold cuts they use for the subs, plus other small things. However, Mr. Jim's blows away your average Zero's. Mr. Jim's is Zero's on steroids. First off, Mr. Jim's has a much larger and impressive menu. I'd say they have more than twice the number of subs available than most Zero's. Also, they have a lot of things that Zero's doesn't. Things like wings (traditional and boneless), chicken tenders, cheese sticks, lumpia, Gyros/Pita sandwiches, even burgers. Fiery Fingers (Mr. Jim's version of Buffalo Sauced chicken tenders) are one of my favorites. I also love their french fries which you can get in two different styles (regular and steak cut). The sandwiches are great too. The Mr. Jim's combination special is analogous to your standard Zero's grinder, but I find is slightly better overall. The cheesesteaks are great, I especially dig the Cajun and Fajita steak varieties, as well as all of the tender steak and cheese options. They have a sloppy joe sub, and boneless pork rib (think McRib) sub. Also, the City Hall Burger (4 burger patties on a sub roll with your choice of toppings) is a mighty awesome thing to eat and behold. Unlike Zero's, their pizza is actually pretty good. Zero's pizza is terrible by the way. Plus, they have breakfast! They have biscuits, which are comparable to Hardees or Bojangles in my opinion, but they also have some breakfast sub options as well. The breakfast options are quite good. Another thing I really like is that they have Birch beer on tap. Mr. Jim's is awesome. Service here is really good. Stuff get's made pretty fast, so your not waiting very long. I rarely eat in at Mr. Jim's, but the place is always nice and clean, and they have tables outside as well, which are nice when the weather is permitting. They do a good job with keeping up with the carryout orders, and are normally right on the money with time estimates they give you on when food will be ready. I don't do it that often, but I've had good experiences with their delivery as well. Mr. Jim's has really good reputation from folks who grew up in Chesapeake, and I totally get it. Again, I compare this place to Zero's, but there really is no comparison. Mr. Jim's is top notch. read more

Mister Jim's has always been my go-to for comfort food. I always order the same thing each time I go here and it has never once failed to disappoint me. Whenever I order delivery, it is very quick and the drivers have a great attitude, and when I go to pick up in store, I am greeted with a warm welcome. I also love the amount of customization you can do through the online website when choosing what you want on a burger or sandwich. That being said, there are only two problems I have encountered: The Steak fries are sometimes not as crispy as I would like them or salted (both are trivial things in my opinion) and sometimes their delivery drivers drive like maniacs, haha! Love the subs but not the service. There's an online coupon for buy 2 get one free and I called in my order for 3 subs and mentioned I had the coupon. I went to pick up the subs and they said they needed a paper copy of a coupon and it stated that on the coupon. I pulled up the website and the coupon and no where on there did it say anything so they wouldn't give me my free sub (the entire reason I ordered form there). For a place that has been here so long and has so much hype. I guess I was expecting more. I had come here before when I was a cable repair guy. The value for the money is great. However the food although made fresh was just average to me. The fries were soggy and not that great. To much liquid in the subs which makes them become soggy quickly. I ordered the cheese steak full size sub. It was ok. Nothing I would rave about unless I had nothing to compare it to. The service was pretty good , the cashier was attentive and explained things. I may have ordered something that they don't make that great buy my gfs Gyro was pretty crap and not made with the same quality or care as the subs. My advice, skip it. And be very specific with how you want your sub. Like if I went back I would tell them I don't want it to be soggy because it honestly makes them taste rather bland. Also be careful with how much they put on the sub in regard to condiments. Like mayo, if you don't want a lot. Tell them because they will slap it on with a shovel. Ordered from here the day after Christmas (BC Zero's subs on Volvo was closed). I got the grandmaster and my brother go the chicken Philly, in addition we ordered fresh cut fries (large). My sandwich just didn't seem to taste right. I tried not to compare it to the grinder at zeros, but that was what I was looking for. Some of the meats appeared to be in thick slices and others where thin, which made it all inconsistent. I was anticipating an "oven baked" experience but felt more like a cold cut sandwich on toasted bread. My brother felt that his was a bit bland and did not look appetizing at all. To end on a positive note, the fries were great. Not sure if I will try this place again when I am visiting for the holidays. read more

I love this place! Allow me to compliment the atmosphere and the service firstly. I really enjoyed the unique decor & I loved the music. They've got some great little diner-esque booths inside, and charming little tables outside that are surrounded by cute outdoor lights. I went with two other people who both had high praise for their subs; they tried the Meatball and a Philly Steak. I had the Bridge Club & it was scrumptious. We all got a small cheese fry to split (which was still huge) & enjoyed every last bite. The only complaint that I have is that the fries, although they were fresh, were a bit more mushy than crispy. Even at that, we still kept eating them because they were good. They looked freshly cut and they were super hot when they came out. This is now officially my favorite local place. We have lived in Great Bridge for over 20 years. Over the years we have ordered from Mister Jims at least once a month. We never really had any issues until the last few months. There were incidents where the online ordering system gave me confirmation and the restaurant stated they never received an order. We then did voice call orders and were told a 15-45 minute wait. after 1.5 hours we finally received our food cold an soggy. I have brought their leftovers to work and reheated them and they tasted better than the 'fresh' delivery we just received. I am just wondering did ownership/management change over the last few months? I don't know what happened but we are very disappointed and an old family favorite is no more. read more

I've been putting in restaurants and taking them out forever 30 years and I grew up in Chesapeake Great Bridge. Mr Jim's as the best Chesapeake Jubilee sub, if you like lots of meat and sweet peppers it is the best bang for your buck there is no other sub place in Great Bridge that can beet that sub . also their menu and other subs look awesome fresh cut fries even have pizza that's pretty good for frozen pizza but you can't go wrong at lunch or dinner for any of their subs they are the best in Great Bridge also have a very clean staff which I like . read more

I ordered a 5 ft Mr. Jim's party sub today for my schoolage children at Kids Kollege Learning Center in spring break. I am very impressed with the patience and cooperation they gave us. It came with all the condiments. They delivered with no extra charge ( of course we ripped generously). The only negative thing was the discrepancy between what was posted on their website and what was told to me on the phone concerning how many people the subs feed. Went here for lunch with my sister. I had the Chicken Breast and Cheese Sandwich and it was fantastic. The chicken was juicy and it had great flavor. They didn't overdo it with the mayo. They were fast and efficient and very friendly. My sister had the reuben and fries. We wound up sharing the fries because it was a lot and they were very good. Reminiscent of Five guys fries which are awesome. Free refills on soda and tea. Clean eating area. I will most definitely be back to try some more. Sandwiches are not bad. But nothing I would be running back to. I been here twice. In comparison to other locations that also make subs, I am disappointed. The amount of ingredients on subs are not mixed well together as some of the things on the sandwich are too much or too little. My boyfriend got the Philly cheesesteak and he was highly disappointed. They told us they never received the order and then asked for our confirmation number. They then told us someone called us to say we were to far for delivery.
