Selection of snacks is excellent. Lots of fun beverages, a small amount of organic produce, and the prices are expensive but typical of small organic food shops. The staff is excellent, the owner is awesome, and their in house hot food is worth the stop. Bottom line is that they do not sell junk. I could live here. I could. A little cafe as you enter and a small health food grocer in the back. They have an organic alcohol list as well as tea and coffee, baked goods and delicious full, hot meal options made with seasonal veggies. I'm glad I was on vacation here and limited to what I bought from the grocery section otherwise I could have spent way too much. I got delicious candies I couldn't pass up on-vegan ones I can't even find in the Cities! I stopped by again for lunch and was a little nervous about trying the sandwich of the day-the portobello. I've had these before and they are soggy but not this one! The mushroom was cut and cooked thin so it fit perfectly on bread with mayo and veggies. So insanely juicy but in a good way! Darn tasty and served with a side of veggie chips (dehydrated vegetables, not like veggie stix junk), a pickle, a slice of orange and a little bunch of grapes. I saved my grapes for last and offered them to my sister because I'm super picky about grapes and they looked soft... thank goodness I tried one before I gave them away-crisp and delicious! Definitely not just an added afterthought. The meal was so well put together and wholesome. I also tried a lemon tartlette-refreshing and tasty! I wish I had something like this near me (I probably do but Organic Roots just feels different and honest). My only qualm is the issue of stairs on entry. The clientele is older and many have troubles getting up and down (also not wheelchair accessible etc). Music could be updated as well. Great little cafe and specialty grocer! My husband and I stopped here while we were in town staying at Burntside Lodge. We got coffee, fruit, pastries, and soup to go. This is the perfect place for someone with food allergies/gluten free/vegan or even just someone who wants some healthy options. Good selection of fresh organic produce, snacks, and regular groceries in the market section. I would definitely come back and eat in the cafe. Such a cute little hole in the wall! read more

Delicious food! I had premade hummus wrap and also ordered a cup of carrot cumin lime soup. The sandwich was $9.00 and came with chips and fruit, and the soup was $3.00. Everything I had was delicious! My sister ordered a flatbread which was also super tasty and cost $12. The store part of the cafe is also neat, kind of like a little co-op! Incredibly warm, friendly staff and great food, too! We all got something different, from a vegan ratatouille to a blackened beef flatbread and everything was flavorful and filling. One thing to be aware of is that the cafe hours and the store hours are a little different from one another. They opened at 9am, but don't really serve breakfast, so we just came back for lunch, which seems to be when they serve most of their fresh food. They have wraps and sandwiches ready to eat when they're open, so you can still get food, but fresh/hot options seemed to be more lunch-focused. read more

YUM!!!! I happened to drive down Chapman St on my visit to Ely today and saw this cute little deli/bistro as I passed by. I was so excited that there was a "new" place to try!!! All persons with disabilities should boycott this restaurant. The chef, Ed Handrigan, attempted to kick me out because I had my service dog with me. He was extremely nasty and derogatory in his comments and general manner. I stood my ground, but I will certainly not be giving my business to this place, and I will actively discourage others from doing so. I called and reported this incident to the manager, who, though apologetic, chose not to honor my request for a face-to-face apology from the chef with the manager present. Consequently, this incident will be reported to the Department of Justice, and this establishment can look forward to a hefty fine. read more

The best restaurant in Ely, if you like fresh organic, amazing food. Try the stuffed Thai cabbage leaves or fish stew. Salads are great. They have a new chef that used to work at Wolfgang Puck, and other similar places. You won't believe you are at the end of the road in the northwoods. read more

Stopped in for a late lunch thanks to Yelp! on our way through Ely, MN. Had the sweet potato sausage soup with fresh thyme (homemade vegetable broth too I was told) and my husband had the lunch special: Baked Lemon Ricotta Pasta with fresh tomato sauce. Both dishes were excellent and the service wonderful! Sat outside across the street at a sister store bistro table per the restaurant suggestion on this gorgeous day and they hand delivered our food and water refills!
