Small family enjoying food
Ihab D.

Sushi quality is amazing. They were out of Toro but it was a blessing cause it made us try a bigger variety. Quality quality quality. It took the big island to another level for me we will be back a couple more times this week. Thank you for putting all the effort together owners and shef amazing job!!

Saimin!!
Brooke V.

Wonderful, friendly service. Food was top notch - fish was quality, from Japan. The sauces/flavors enhanced the food and did not overpower. Loved this local spot - felt authentic Japanese and yet still true to being in Hawaii and local. The Saimin was a unique twist and shout out to the name of the restauraunt - moa! (Chicken). I liked the onion flavor and the texture and quality of the noodles was so so good. The mochi was a delight - not too sweet, mochi texture was perfect and how they cut it in the middle to share. So Asian and I loved that touch ^_^. 10/10 recommend and would come back again!

Butter fish

Went back and this time with the whole family. Our kids are picky but they loved their French fries, their gyoza, karate chicken, and ramen. Three of us had their butter fish because it's SOOOO good. But I also did a sashimi bowl because their tuna is so good. Great service.

potato croquettes, gyoza

best ramen i've ever had in my life, hands down. ramen is usually hard for me because i can't eat pork and a lot of spots don't offer non-pork ramen, whether it's the pork belly or the broth being pork-based... so when my friend from waimea told me this was a chicken ramen establishment, i was overjoyed! so not only did it fit into my dietary restrictions, it bested all the other ramen i've ever had (though i have not been to japan yet, so maybe take that into consideration, but still). not only that, but the gyoza and croquettes were phenomenal. i was just getting over a health condition that demolished my appetite, but i just wanted to keep eating and eating. really wonderful service and the inside is cozy. very packed too and it was just a random night in july. next time i find myself on the big island, moa is getting another visit.

We had dinner here and it was exceptional. From the atmosphere , food and staff everything was great. We got a variety of food. The yakatori was juicy and flavorful and the fish fresh. Definitely recommend coming here . We cant wait to go back

Curry Chicken katsu
Darwin D.

The katsu curry chicken was exceptional - the cutlets were super crispy, the curry was rich and flavorful, and the diced pickled radish had a wonderful crunch. The server was knowledgeable, gave good recommendations to our party, and kept checking on us to make sure we had everything. The restaurant felt relaxing with a good amount of light, but closed shades to keep the place cool and the light from blinding us during conversation. Planning to come back tonight for a bigger portion!

Let's start with the nouko shio ramen broth. Loved it. Next the takoyaki. Loved it. Yakitori gourmet skewers, steak & pork belly yummy but I don't eat lamb chops so I can't give my opinion on that. Service was a bit slow and I'm not sure if our server was new or just forgetful. I would like to hope it's new but she was extremely friendly. It took a while to get our drinks or even refills on water. But our food was served very quickly. Food definitely made up for the 1 slow server. Definitely will visit again when in Waimea.

Seems like reviews say reservations are recommended. But links on Yelp and restaurant website are deadlink/dead ends. I called the number but it went straight to voicemail, and it said voicemail box was not set up. How do i make a reservation?

You will need to call the restaurant during the hours it is open in order to make a reservation.

How to check if online reservation is confirmed ? I followed the link but got no confirmation.

I experienced the same thing. So ended up calling to make the reservation. Sorry to say, We were totally disappointed with our last visit. Both the service and food were mediocre. Good Luck!

Any chance you have a gluten free noodle? Or a gluten free entree item?

Sorry, not sure

Each dish we tried had an amazing mix of flavors. Everything was fresh, even the pull apart bread. I opted for the Ahi Tuna, and it was cooked to perfection. The oysters were excellent as well. We also LOVED the ambiance. It seems most tables, whether indoors or outside, faced the ocean with an open concept. Therefore, even the indoor tables are technically outdoors. This was the perfect set up to watch an amazing Hawaiian sunset during dinner. As expected the service was very friendly and attentive. This is one of those must visit spots on the big island. Even if we don't stay at the Mauna Lani next visit, we're definitely going to still visit this place.

We saw from Yelp photos that Canoe House offered a tasting menu at some point in time, but during our visit, it was more of an impromptu tasting menu of sorts -- created by our server, rather than an official one with a set beverage pairing. In any case, we still had a wonderful experience ordering items a la carte. Before diving into the food, I wanted to call out the outstanding service at Canoe House. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and our server started and ended the meal with a round of congratulations. Throughout our meal, our server was super attentive and there was never a moment when our water cups were empty. Empty plates were promptly cleared, cutlery was refreshed when it was needed, and whenever a dish was brought over, he would carefully slide things around on the table so dishes were accessible and not overcrowding. Friendly, professional service of this level is honestly hard to find these days outside of Michelin dining establishments. My wife and I started our meal off with the large loaf of pull-apart milk bread ($18). The milk bread was incredibly fluffy and the outside was finished with some honey and sea salt. The sweet cream butter was rich and had the perfect spreadable consistency. As tempting as it is to want to finish the loaf, you'll definitely want to safe your stomach for the rest of the meal. The next items that we ordered were two chilled oysters ($7/piece), and a hamachi + uni citrus salad ($14). Since we were dining as a couple, our server informed us that we could actually order half-portions of some of the dishes. This was a perfect way to not fill-up before our mains arrived, so we did that for both the salad and the gyozas. The uni in the salad was melt in your mouth tender and had a delicious sweetness to it. I thought the hamachi in the salad was a bit unremarkable: it was certainly fresh and there were two generously sized pieces in the dish, but the fish definitely needed a bit more salt to it. Our next and last appetizer to arrive was the beef and foie gras gyoza ($7/piece). The chili garlic ponzu sauce the gyoza is resting leans towards the sour side, but that's my personal preference when it comes to dumpling sauces so I really enjoyed it. The filling inside the gyoza was on the leaner side compared to your typical pork and cabbage dumpling, but I didn't mind this too much since there was so much sauce in the bowl to accommodate the dumpling. The next four items we ordered all arrived together: the garlic fried rice ($32), the Kona kanpachi ($67), the Iberico char siu pork ($65), and the side of sugar snap peas ($22). Of these items, my favorite bites were the Iberico pork followed closely by the garlic fried rice and the sugar snap peas. If we could've ordered one fewer dish, it definitely would have been the Kona kanpachi. While the fish was flakey tender and the the skin was cooked to be perfectly crunchy, the portion size was far too large for two, and I thought the coconut ginger sauce felt a bit diluted and not as flavorful as advertised. I wish our server warned us that we had ordered way too much food, because we brought 85% of this dish home as leftovers. While I don't necessarily mind having leftovers, having leftovers on vacation -- with less than ideal heating methods available (i.e. hotel microwave), is not great. Overall, I couldn't help but feel this dish was somewhat a waste of money for the two of us. On the other hand, the Iberico char siu is a dish I'd order again and again if I were to come back. The pork was lean and grilled to perfection. The charred end pieces were some of my favorite bites of the night. I didn't miss the fatty bits that are typically present on a piece of char siu pork, and the mustard that accompanied the dish was not over the top spicy like some of the mustards you find at dim sum restaurants. The garlic fried rice was packed with so much garlic flavor. One criticism I had with the dish though is I wish the hot sizzling plate the dish was served on was even hotter. The rice that was in contact with the plate didn't crisp up in the same way that it would with a Korean bibimbap served in a hot stone bowl, or the socarrat at the bottom of a Spanish paella. Nonetheless, the dish was well-seasoned. If you want to save a bit on carbs and not fill up, you might want to skip this dish. Overall, the dining under the stars experience at Canoe House is hard to beat. The service is incredible, the included validated valet parking experience is seamless, the ambience of the hotel where the restaurant is located is breathtaking, and Chef Rhoda has really done an wonderful job with the vast majority of the items we tried. I would not hesitate to recommend Canoe House for celebrating a special occasion if you're visiting Hawaiʻi.

Just about a block north of the airport complex on Kalanikoa Street, there was a good amount of parking on a Saturday. HLS is hugely popular, usually the line snakes out of the building on work days. Today the line still stretched out in a lazy C to the second door into the shop. Shuffling through the line, I had a lot of time to check out the food. Struck by how reasonable the prices were. Got up to the head of the line and ordered. Paid and went outside to enjoy my food. Saw that the reason for good prices is that some of the portions like the spam musubi were for a half a musubi. But my eyes were bigger than my opu, and I had a lot to take as leftovers anyway. HLS's food is tasty and reasonable. How great is it to see another old-time okayzuya continue to survive! Will repeat whenever my travels bring me back to Hilo, and highly recommend!

I didn't see a menu outside so I went inside and asked if they could do a Togo order. A very young female standing at the hostess stand looked at me up and down As if there was something wrong with me. And in a snotty "valley girl" tone she said " we have the bento Kenichi for to go orders" I asked if it was the same menu stated "no not really". When I asked if I could see a menu she said I had to " go over there" To see a menu for this place . She handed me a menu I perused through it, looked really good. But I thought it looked so good that maybe I would come back when I could sit down and enjoy it. So I went to the " bento" side and the door was locked, I checked the hours and it was supposed to be to be open, no note on the door nothing. So I went back to Kenichi and the little snotty hostess and told her that the door was locked, another employee stated " ohhhh yeh the manager went on some errands (at 5pm hmmm) let be see if I can find someone to help you" Way to go Kenichi my first impression will be my last impression. It will be a cold day in hell before I spend money in your establishment. To be clear I work from home, money is not a factor I simply don't care how much things cost, was dressed down but not a slob by any means. I left frustrated, feeling judged by some snot nose teenager who made you loose a customer for life. I went over to benellies a near by Italian restaurant and the same aged hostess was warm and welcoming. Got my Togo order and left that hostess a 25% tip.
