WOW!! An AMAZING hike with ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS view. ONCE IN A LIFE TIME EXPERIENCE. The most thrilling hike I have been on! You will want to block out an entire day for this.
We first heard about the hike from the Haiku stairs, which are located on the other side of the mountain ridges. Turns out that now IT IS ILLEGAL TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN FROM THOSE STAIRS. If you were to take the stairs, it would only take 1-2 hours to reach the top, where there is an abandoned light house. However, there are now officers who guard at the bottom of the stairs, and GIVE OUT TICKETS to anyone climbing down and exiting from the stairs.
However, we also heard that the officers only get to the stairs after 6 or 7am, so if you were to go early enough you would avoid meeting the officer. Our original plan was to drive to the entrance of the Haiku stairs, climb up to see the sun rise, and climb back down through the other side on the mountain ridges. But that meant we had to wake up at 3 or 4am, which was way too early. And also there was the problem of how to get from the other side of the mountain to where we parked the car. Not a good idea.
So we decided to climb the mountain through the long way on on the unpaved ridges. ON YELP IT SAYS IT WOULD ONLY TAKE 3-4 HOURS ROUND TRIP BUT IT TOOK US 12 HOURS!!! (Granted we had 6 girls in our group and we took a lot of break).
We drove and parked at a public parking lot AT THE END OF Ala Aolani St. The parking lot is open from 6am to 7pm and is FREE. To walk from the parking lot to the beginning of the actual trail was about 2 miles. The road was unpaved and you will encounter 18-19 paved bridges for authorized cars to drive on. Once you see a sign that says "KULANAHAME TRAIL", walk another 15 ft and the beginning of the trail will be on your left. There will be a bed stream of rocks.
From there the real hiking begins. The beginning was not too bad. There was a lot of trees and shades. The ground was slippery from the dry sand, and there are places where the brushes are almost blocking the trail so you will need to squeeze yourself through.
You will encounter a huge boulder. By then you are probably 1/3 way through the hike. You will also encounter 6-7 really steep upward slopes. There will be thick ropes for you to hold onto to climb upwards. The steepest slope is about 75 to 80 degrees in vertical angulation, and maybe 3-4 stairs tall.
You will encounter many "false summits" where you'll feel like you reached the top but you really haven't. YOUR DESTINATION is the light house with a radar antenna on the top. In order to reach there, you'll need to climb down 2-3 more steep slopes, but they are fairly short. However, they are pretty muddy so just be very careful.
Once you get to the light house, you will be able to see the other side of the coast and look back at how far you have climbed!!! You will literally be climbing on the ridge of the mountain, i.e. there is only enough room for one person to walk through and there is no ledge on either side.
FEW IMPORTANT THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
1) Bring lots and lots of water. 2 plastic bottles at least . You will need it
2) Bring sugar. You will need energy to push through.
3) Bring fruits, snacks, protein bars. Just food in general for breaks.
4) Bring hand sanitizer if you will be eating, because your hands will be very dirty from climbing.
5) Wear long pants and gloves if you don't want to get scratched.
6) Wear shoes with high friction; also shoes that you don't mind throwing away after the hike because IT WILL GET REALLY DIRTY
7) Bring flash light if you are going to be traveling at night, WHICH IS HIGHLY HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED.
8) If you are scared of heights, DO NOT GO ON THIS. Like I said, there is a good portion of the trail where there is no ledge on either side and there is very little wiggle room for even one person. If you are scared of heights, you will not enjoy this trail.
Lastly, take lots of pictures and just have fun. And award yourself with a big, nutritious meal after you finish! VERY VERY WORTH It. read more
