The small staff at Moda does quite competent alterations work if one is willing to wait a long time for completion (I'm OK with that, I get it), AND, if one does not present a difficult challenge in altering the garment. My problems with the shop are as follows: 1) they do not adhere to their posted hours of doing business. I have often dropped by with an arm full of heavy garments I schlepped from the car, only to discover that the shop is closed during hours posted on the door, very frustrating. 2) They really seem not interested in problem-solving a difficult alteration in order to achieve a good result, and seem mildly annoyed by the request. If an alteration requires extra attention and creativity in finding a solution, special extra steps...fuhgeddabout it! The problem is that the untrained customer often doesn't know going in what an alteration will entail, and once any level of difficulty is perceived by the seamstress, a less desirable solution is suggested. They seem focused on either their own custom designs - BTW, in my opinion, nothing remarkable, fresh, exciting, just very safe and 'suburban', though well-made.... or, their customer-commissioned copies of ACTUAL runway couture. I guess the customer gets to call the shots in that respect, but I think doing so in a kind of public way is unseemly and turned me off. I can handle the other drawbacks: a crappy little dressing room with no chair; selling their homemade baked goods in the shop; having a baby/then toddler/then small child, toys and accoutrement on the premises and underfoot; even the general shop attitude of annoyance at stopping to wait upon a customer. I have left the shop often feeling like I have somehow imposed upon them in seeking their services. And I'm not difficult, I like to laugh, I'm warm and friendly (really, I am), and I just want somebody to care about making my clothing fit correctly and well. For me, try often as I did, this simply was not the right place. For these reasons, I haven't wanted to go back for quite some time. It is entirely possible that conditions have changed since, and a customer CAN rely on quite decent work so long as nothing 'out of the box' is needed. read more
