I hired Modern Family Law in December 2025 for a prenuptial agreement and paid $6,169.66 under an hourly fee agreement. It was one of the more frustrating professional experiences I've had. In late March, my attorney sent a revised draft to opposing counsel without tracked changes and acknowledged in writing that he had forgotten to turn them on. Opposing counsel asked for a marked version on April 1. Nothing was sent for the next 15 days, while I was left assuming my matter was moving forward. On April 17, the firm told me in writing that the redlines had been sent to opposing counsel. Opposing counsel confirmed in writing, twice, that she never received them. The firm later acknowledged they had not been sent. Finding that out is what ended my confidence in them entirely. I was offered a $500 credit toward the billing dispute. When I accepted the firm's offer to close the matter, that credit was withdrawn. My file was closed with a $57 charge for preparing the closing letter. I ended up hiring new counsel to finish the work, months later than I should have. Every statement above is supported by emails I still have, including correspondence from opposing counsel. If you work with this firm, document everything and confirm independently that work you're billed for was actually done. read more

We paid a $3750 retainer. Over several months, substantial fees were billed for internal strategy conferences, while key case actions appeared delayed. When funds were nearly depleted, counsel moved to withdraw during a critical phase, leaving us to seek replacement counsel under pressure. We also disputed an unauthorized $1,300 debit after written assurances billing would come from trust funds. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend this representation. They robbed me blind. They say "in a divorce only the lawyers win" and Josh completely epitomized this. They had the audacity to keep billing me for weeks after I fired them. I actually had to fire them and do the work myself to get my divorce finalized. $20k in and essentially nothing to show for it.... I had to lock my credit card because even after I told them in writing they had no authority to work on my case they kept hitting it for bills they cooked up. I tried to reason with Josh, but found out he is no longer with the firm. I've heard some shady stuff about him since. I should've done my research. I hired Cynthia Griffin of the Denver Office, which was a mistake, but my biggest mistake was not firing her before I did. READ THE REVIEWS; everything that you read about exorbitant billing practices is true. Your divorce here with her will take twice as long and cost four times as much as you were told in your initial consult. She REFUSED to be proactive with communication with me, and she was sloppy in her work and antagonistic responding to me when I begged for information. After months and months of no communication and monstrously high bills, I finally fired her and hired Goldman Law for a MUCH more professional relationship, and a much more aggressive and effective approach to my divorce. If you have a simple question to her (and you have to ask because she is not independently forthcoming) she will run your question by three colleagues and you will get a bill from all three, even though you have no idea who they are. WOW! I'm even more angry that I didn't read these reviews before hiring them to complete a simple guardianship transfer - which I was told they could do. Jasmine Johnson was assigned to my case and I was billed MULTIPLE times for "research" and not an ounce of work was done on my case. When I finally fired her, I was billed an additional $100 for the email attachment of the 'official' letter closing my case with their office. I've disputed the charge with my credit card company multiple times and yet they continue to keep recharging me for it. I spent thousands with them for ZERO work product. It's a scam and I'm going to continue fighting that ridiculous charge so they don't get another dime out of me. read more

They only know how to charge a credit card. After 59K paid IN FULL they won't return a phone call or text unless your card is on file. Modern Family Law: Deceptive, Overpriced, and a Total Disgrace I've never been more misled, overbilled, and abandoned by a business than I was by Modern Family Law. They lied about their attorneys' experience, drained me financially, failed to fight for me, and then refused to release all my case files. Misled About Attorney Experience I hired Liz Milewski under the impression she was an experienced family law attorney. She had only 12 months of experience, a fact I only learned after I fired her​. When I confronted her about poor case handling, she blamed me rather than owning up to her incompetence. Overbilled for work I never saw No strategy, no advocacy Poor communication and delays I fired Liz, expecting better. I was wrong. Second Lawyer: Andy Kemmer--$20K Wasted & Then Abandoned I was then assigned Andy Kemmer, a former prosecutor​. I needed a defense attorney with a family law background, not a prosecutor. From the start, Andy assured me: "The DA has nothing. This is an easy win." After three months and $20,000 in legal fees, the first DA offer arrived, and Andy--along with Managing Partner Nicholas Tootalian--flipped completely, telling me: "Take the extreme deal or find another lawyer." So, after billing me into the ground, they abandoned me when I needed them most. Modern Family Law REFUSES to Release My Full Case File After requesting my case files multiple times, I received this response: "We have reviewed our obligations and are confident we are in full compliance. There is nothing more for you to receive." Translation? They won't provide proof of what I was billed for. If they had actually done the work, why hide it? Managing Partner Nicholas Tootalian: Hostile, Dismissive, and Dishonest I tried working with Tootalian regarding excessive billing. Instead of addressing my concerns, he was: Hostile and dismissive Refused to consider a refund Backed both lawyers, despite overwhelming proof of deception Even alluded to not believing in my innocence--after taking $20K Final Thoughts: AVOID THIS SCAM FIRM They will lie to get your business. I feel they were no much help . I feel the way they hold on to the retainer, in my case it was about 40 days after I got my divorce. Tried to engage for a divorce representation, barely able to offer any reasonable advice, took an absolute lifetime to even fill out boilerplate documents, errors in documentation even though gave them every detail in impeccable form and simplicity for them to fill out for me. Do not recommend the CO location. Ineffective counsel. Their firm fired my attorney half-way through my case and assigned a more expensive attorney who was as ineffectual as the first. Lack of communication, lack of knowledge regarding past child support due (my main issue), and overcharging without advising me about the charges for them to confer with other attorneys. Not experts. Not tech savvy. When I asked them to withdraw from the case, I asked for my file. They did not have a file for all my documents and charged an exorbitant amount to me to put my file together. If you want to know what it feels like to be an atm machine then modern family law is the firm for you ! This Is a great place to be double , tripple , and quadruple billed for everything you do with them and when questioning them about your itemized invoice which will be a mile long and medical billing look easy , you'll find that every single email or conversation you have with your appointed attorney will need to be discussed , emailed, conferred, researched, with at least 2 or 3 other staff members in the firm and you will be billed for each and every one of them at whatever their rates are , You will never be notified of this upfront, believe me I read the fee agreement 3 times front to back. ETA 10/11: The attorney went to bat for me on the financial aspect, but because I cannot afford to pay the large sum and just sit around and hope that my ex signs the paperwork; they have to file to dismiss. This law office, should really consider payment plans if you will work with single moms.So keep the retainer, and I will continue to review and speak loudly of the corrupt business practices. So heads up to any single mom if you cannot afford their continued high bills they will have to drop you... ------ I have retained this firm to assist with a child custody case while I am no longer in the state of CO and neither is my child. Jeremy M. is very knowledgable, patient, kind and hard working. However this firm is beginning to lose my trust and patience; and I wish it was as easy as taking your attorney that has been so kind and having them represent you outside of the firm but totally not possible. They bill you a very large bill every two weeks. They do not do payment plans so be prepared to have to front the entire bill that is sent to you; as a newly single mom and not getting any support from ex, limited resources of family help etc. It is very discouraging when you literally are signing your paychecks over every two weeks in hopes that this wins your case. Refuse to provide your supervisors information because clearly her and I were not on the same page as the invoice and the drafted amounts do not match... so I wanted clarification. Overall at this point I am hoping this drawn out custody drama is over soon. Thankfully my ex and I seem to be on the same wave length finally and will be figuring out the best way to handle this case. Colorado courts are ridiculous to begin with, but when you are exhausting all of your options to pay for a law firm in hopes that it will help you reach your goals it is very exhausting and draining. If you truly want to use this firm be sure ask for Jeremy M. he is super super great and I wish he had his own firm to work out of because he definitely takes the time to assist clients. I obtained their services for a divorce , as single father taking full responsibility and zero help from the children's mother I have one of my kids get sick and spent thousands in bills. I had to put the divorce on hold and requested the retainer back due to loss of housing and medical cost. Not only did they charge me $150 plus for a 4 min phone call, they also refuse to issue the retainer. They have violated their own fee agreement and I will be reaching out to the Bar on the next business day. The ladies in finance tell you one thing and do another . Update (10.27): I still haven't heard back from any one. It's been over a week and my case has been closed 30 days (as of yesterday). No retainer fee refund either.. Update (10.18): uploaded a picture of an example of being charged for a missed call. I did not answer this phone call because I had already spoke with the visitation center regarding this. Yet, it showed up on my billing... as if it wasn't already lame enough to get charged every time my ex's lawyer wanted to reach out to you over situations that had already been resolved. No, I do not have control of what the courts want to do, but when my own lawyer starts to put his own best interests in mind and decided to go against what he told me, I have a reason to be upset. More money for him right? I put my trust in this firm and you took advantage of my case by your sleezy billing methods. Yes, I can clearly read the refund criteria but financials hasn't done their part in fulfilling that. Instead, I just got some other random charge 3 weeks after my case was closed and a note saying I have to wait 2 weeks for inactivity until my refund can be processed... and how am I supposed to reach financials when I'm already complaining that they haven't been responding. It took me writing this review to receive any response and you're not even some body that can help me nor is trying to make this right. You should be an attorney, cause you know how to defend yourself Long version: I hired Modern Family Law towards the end of my case.. like right at the end.. we literally only had one more court hearing, for the final orders, and it was supposed to be over with. Basically I paid my retainer fee, signed the paperwork, and we had to appear in court 4 days later. If you're wondering why I even needed to hire an attorney this close to the end, I just did- and that's another long story on its own. Any way. My lawyer, Grant, was unavailable for the court hearing, so the paralegal showed up to represent me. She didn't realize it was supposed to be a final order and thought it was just a check-in. Well, my ex and his attorney didn't show up at all, so my paralegal requested a continuous since we came unprepared as well. That's probably the root of my bitterness. Since my ex and I couldn't agree on part of the parenting plan, we decided to take it to trial. The court gave us a month to prepare. My ex didn't do any thing he was supposed to and was somehow granted another continuous. What I'm most upset about though, is that another 2 months go by and a week before our trial, my attorney calls me to let me know that my ex will be getting a new attorney cause his current one doesn't 'do trials' but his new attorney will be out of the country and they asked for another continuous. My attorney told me that he doesn't think we should allow that and is going to deny their request. Come to find out, it gets granted- and on the court order it specifically states that my attorney showed up to the court house, on a different matter, and let them know we will be seeking a continuous. I felt super betrayed because there was no communication that that was even a thought. My attorney then tried to call me and let me know my ex's new attorney thinks he can get him to agree on everything and it won't go to trial. Another month later and more money being drained from my account, my ex finally agreed to the terms. Then, my attorney went to a new firm and I was assigned a new attorney, who was nice enough to give me a $500 credit for the 'inconvenience' but of course found a way to completely drain me of that, too, all within a 2 week period.. When I looked at my charge statement, I got charged for an hour, stating I met up with her to go over the final orders and sign them, when in fact, I told her I was going to print all the papers and sign them with a notary instead. All I did was drop off the papers to her . When I reached out to billing I got no response. Then, I was supposed to get my retainer fee within 30 days. I've been waiting...It's been about 20 days and all of a sudden, today, I just got charged with a random $13 filing fee and then a side note saying 'I bet you're wondering about your refund'.. and then it goes over all the refund terms. The one that stuck out to me was that 'I have to have 2 weeks of inactivity before I get my refund back'.. what the f???? My attorney already withdrew from my case and it's been more then 2 weeks of inactivity so why am I still getting charged?? I will be even more upset if I have to wait another 30 days because of this charge today. I just don't recommend this firm... Please adhere to this warning before you decide to say yes to this firm!!!! The upfront call is light and accepting and you think your best interest is #1 one but by the 3rd or 4th billing cycle you will quickly realize it's all about the buck at this place. $3,000 is the retainer which acts like a security deposit and as long as there is no outstanding balance you get that back (STILL WAITING on that but it's been a few days since the attorney removed herself from my case so that's fair). 6months into a divorce and custody case, and mind you the divorce is not being contested by either side, we arrived at temporary orders that have still not allowed me to see my daughter or my animal. I repeat $20,000+ in the hole into this firm and we're no where close to being done with the matter. If we're rating on personality this firm gets high praise for that but as far as navigating in a court room to get results, that's where the buck stops. Attorney Clare Mattione was cordial and nice but every performance in the court room (3 separate occasions/$20,000+ dollars later) still no result. Lackluster, under motivated, and novice is the description I would describe my experience as having her as my counsel. By the 3rd month in I raised questions about the billing and why charges for weekly meetings for 3 people were being charged to me, and the answer was "for all members on the team to be current with what's happening with your case." 6 Months and nothing I mean NOTHING has changed in any case let alone enough to have weekly meetings about me every other week. Between $450-$1,000 is charged every 2 weeks like clock work and NOTHING has changed or advanced in my case, so you can understand my reason for questioning. Then when an email would come in with question I would naturally respond without hesitation...Billing time came and $190-$300 per email and $30-$100 per text message was also billed unto me...Yes, upset. (GRANTED, it does state in the agreement for the both email and text you will be charged) However I gave binders of information in the upfront to circumvent that process. When it seemed as though Ms.Mattione was supplying questions for no reason and only to clarify something we previously discussed I made sure to voice my concerns again about the way billing was occurring and begged for my own counsel to not email or text me again in FEAR OF BEING BILLED FOR HER ASKING QUESTIONS. I was told to allow her to do her job to her ability. Her ability had me interjecting while speaking with the judge at a hearing because she found what I had to say unimportant. HER CLIENT WHO"S PAID HER over $20,000+ and nothing has changed. Per our phone conversation I was emotional and mad to say the least in the matter and yelled at her about the lackluster argument that was anything but that and she proceeded to hang up the phone and TEXT ME THAT SHE"S WITHDRAWING FROM MY CASE because I yelled at her on the phone. Clearly ego, and feelings were hurt but someone who abandons you with no regard of their actions is juvenile. 9 months and I haven't seen my 10 month year old daughter or my service animal, in a divorce that is uncontested is beyond gut wrenching and stressful. To give away $20,000+ to an attorney who wouldn't dare say she earned it by any means is worse. Single father fighting for his little girl and someone doesn't see motivation in that should be your answer picking or not picking this Law firm. I ask you to ask around other attorney's if $20,000+ in an uncontested divorce that's not even close to being finished is normal. No dividing of assets or division of property either, and the ex-wife committed adultery mind you, why is it taking so much money??? Then look at the reviews and see if you see any praises to Attorney Clare Mattione. If you need proof I'm willing to show you invoices telling the truth! Let's just start this by saying the lack of communication from Jennifer was almost insulting. CONSTANT excuses of "well I told my assistant to tell you" or "you should of got the email" or "sorry I've been really busy". We found out about almost all of our meetings and conference calls we were supposed to be apart of FROM THE OTHER PARTYS LAWYER OR THE OTHER PARTY HIMSELF. Absolutely embarrassing to have to find out about most of the things going on from everyone but the lawyer that is supposed to be doing all it for us. The lack of care and honesty was seen from almost day one once they had our money. They don't deserve to be representing anyone at some people's most difficult times. This firm is the type of firm that gives horrible names to lawyers. Not only are they terrible lawyers in terms of practicing law and filing simple motions, but they are extremely money hungry and will take you for every penny they can, even when they make mistakes ( Which they make a lot of them ). We were filing for a guardianship for a minor, it took them over $4,000 just to file the initial paperwork to the courts and it was rejected by the court because it wasn't filled out properly and was missing certain information. So we had to pay them again to re-file. We were requesting permanent guardianship ( 1 year term ), and since it was through probate and could take a long time we were requesting temporary guardianship while we waited for the court date. We hired them beginning of December 2022 and our court date was for end of February. In that time they managed to find a way to bill for over $8,000 without getting us any response from the court for the temporary guardianship. Despite us giving them all the info on bio mom and dad including addresses, CBI reports, etc, they still manage to mess up sending out notices and only realized it TWO DAYS before the hearing that the dad had never been sent notice because they sent it to an address that doesn't even exist. They billed us over $1700 to correct this mistake which meant calling the dad and getting him to sign paperwork to acknowledge the court date. When we hired this firm they assured us they knew how to file this and it would be an easy process and likely wouldn't be much more than $3000. We are being billed excess over well over $10,000 for something that neither dad, nor mom, fought. There was nothing unseen or out of the ordinary that happened to warrant all the additional billings. Their paralegal Jordan bills you for everything under the sun and makes sure they are done separately so they can bill more. She  constantly forgets to add things or has to re-note things or has to talk to multiple attorneys about things so that you get billed for her and them. Andrew, the lawyer assigned to our case, could not do anything with the case without talking to two or three other lawyers every single time. Making even a simple phone call over $500 as a result. The one court appearance he had to appear on he was late, extremely unprepared, couldn't remember specifics of the case, kept saying uhh, ummm, horribly unprofessional. He didn't even know the difference between the judge in robes vs the court assistant. It was truly embarrassing having him represent us. He didn't even get us the full year guardianship, only the temporary one because he didn't file that properly either so the judge wouldn't hear that. I brought up these points many times to them and allowed them to correct their mistakes or to do right by their client, but instead, they just send responses saying "it was necessary because..." or "we aren't trying to take advantage of you, but..." Truly unbelievable. We have interviewed multiple other family lawyers and two of them offered to review our billings from this lawyer for FREE to give their opinion on it and both were truly amazed by what this lawyer does to make money. The "retainer" you pay is also a scam, any money you think you will be owed will be made up in some way is stolen in creative accounting ways. I have nothing good to say about this law firm. In the next month or so I will be creating a website that details my correspondence with this law firm including all the billing PDFs, email responses, and additional notes I may have to show what I'm saying to be true and to hopefully keep other hard working honest people from having their money stolen by this sorry excuse for a law firm. read more

He wanted to incur charges and could care less. I kept insisting him for almost 2 months to file it. I got very upset and he withdrew from my case and still never filed it a motion along with my certification to put the case on hold until the pregnancy was done. Donny McClellan was absolutely amazing, he represented me in a custody battle against my ex husband that was involved over three different states. He kept me up to date with everything I needed to know on my case without over communicating so my bills weren't crazy high (although my ex did his best to ruin that). I had a wonderful experience with my lawyer, who was hired by another firm and then hired mid- prep by Family Law pc Denver. Our court dates extended unexpectedly and needed to continue w/the lawyer I was prepped for the hearing. He was hired by this firm. They did not state clearly their billing practice or then have any swift prudence in fixing the situation when we had major discrepancy taken out of my person checking account! They have aggressively charged me for things that weren't agreed upon and when trying to contact them to correct their mistake, did not respond with any honest or timely self correction . They stated that they would contact me and fix the situation by Kyle in billing by a certain time, but did not, even thought they told the lawyer they would. Have had to repeatedly try and contact the lawyer, because they won't respond in a prudent manner and/or mailboxes are full and won't respond. I would head a warning when dealing with this practice. read more
