According to the owner he buys a vey large supply on the June full moon(this is when the crabs are very soft), then cleans the crabs and freezes them. My dad, my son and I came here after visiting Harbes farms. I thought they had snacks to go but it turns out they are more of a diner but they sell pies to go. I wasn't too hungry so my dad and I got coffee and pie, my son got ice cream. The service was nice and they let people stay past closing. The pie is great, I had a slice of chocolate creme pie, and my dad bought an apple crumb pie to go which I loved to. This is a reasonable place to visit if you're out east. read more

Otto the owner of this fine establishment turned 80 today and we were lucky enough to meet him and experience his restaurant all in one day! Fantastic food, fantastic service and what's even better is that the prices are perfect! We stopped in on our way further out east to grab some lunch and arrived just as they were opening their doors for business today. Temperature was checked and we were then whisked away to our lovely partitioned table. Staff all wore gloves and masks and each table was cleaned thoroughly. Ordered their fried clan strips to start, delicious morsels of clam fried to a golden deliciousness. Their turkey dinner platter comes with a veg choice, potato choice, and both dark and white meat with the best stuffing I've had that is not home made by me. Their stuffed flounder was flaky and buttery and the kids really enjoyed their fried flounder platter from their kids menu too. You must order the lemon meringue pie, like it's a must! Went with family who raved about this place. It was old school with great service, the owner made me a Moscow mule after I stumped the server! Everyone else ordered prime rib and enjoyed it, my fried chicken was lukewarm and not crispy. Shared a butter cake dessert which was pretty good. My kids are pretty well behaved but toddlers will be toddlers and they get excited and loud once in a while. The snack bar had those wax strips you can bend and make things out of. We loved making bracelets and necklaces. Everyone was so nice and made us feel at home. Our kids enjoyed talking to the staff, the patrons and playing peekaboo lol. They still ask to go back. The food Our burgers were perfectly seasoned, cooked medium as asked, and the fries perfectly crispy on the outside and Fluffy on the inside. The kids had chicken fingers and fries, perfectly crispy and juicy. Our server Tracey was one of the best servers we've ever had! She was nice, attentive and made sure our food was perfect. It was a slow day so we got to converse and we got to learn about eachother. It was refreshing. She was on top of her game and we could see how much she enjoyed her job. That's rare these days. We had such a great meal at the Modern Snack Bar! We needed a bite to eat after a day of pumpkin picking and this was the closest place that didn't have a long wait. The place looks like an old school diner or a grandma's dining room - down to the window treatments! However, the menu is definitely more expansive and more fun. I had the soft shell crab dinner - I love soft shell crab but it's rare to find them in NY. The crabs were cooked well - slightly greasy but the batter was crunchy and crispy. The cole slaw was outstanding. He had the seafood platter - also a big hit. The scallops were perfect! We washed it down with some house white wine and a hot coffee. Definitely delicious. Service was fantastic. Our server was great - helpful and understanding especially with the baby in tow. Modern Snack Bar has been serving up locals on the east end since I was a kid. I think that was when the British roamed Long Island, haha. Using local ingredients like bay scallops, fresh caught flounder and Long Island Duck are items that you'll find being served at MSB. Just something to point out, Sea Scallops are those big sucka scallops that you'd buy frozen in your supermarket. "Bay Scallops" are the small scallops being brought to you from a Long Islander who owns a boat like Downeaster Alexa. The end of the year is when I like to wind down and just enjoy the east end. My wife & I had some last minute shopping to do. I look at her and say: Prime Rib? She looks at me and says I thought you'd never ask! Walking in, yeah... It's a restaurant that needs a major update. It's a cross mix of 60s grandmas kitchen and diners gone by. There is a broken milkshake mixer with a sign "Do Not Use" next to the glass case showcasing all of the homemade pies. Our waitress comes over, I ordered a local Long Island beer on tap. I wait for my wife to order her prime rib. She orders like an adult with sides like turnips and zucchini. The waitress asks me, heck I'm going to order the same thing I did as a kid when I lived in Hampton Bays, well cooked french fries with a side of brown gravy and red cabbage. (You know that sounds good) Our medium cooked prime rib come out and man they're bangin'. A big, juicy cut of Prime Rib being served at Modern Snack Bar. Along with those french fries? Brings me right back. Meal is finished, the waitress asked would you like dessert? Oh yeah! They have a few special pies that are all made in house. One of them is a toasted almond cake. Heard they had better pies than Briermere's. These are at least homemade. Heard Briermere's is using an outside baker now. We came for the pies. Ordered the peach and their famous lemon meringue! The peach was by far our favorite! Fresh peaches, can't go wrong with that. So much flavor and richness. The lemon meringue was a huge piece but mostly meringue rather than lemon. Stopped here recently because the beach we normally visit was not accessible, due to high tide. The name is somewhat misleading because this is more of an upscale diner than a place to get hot dogs. I was looking at the hamburger deluxe, but then noticed that the Long Island Duckling was just a dollar or two more. Modern Snack Bar is known for their mashed turnips which feels like a healthier option to the potato. The lemon meringue pie is a showstopper being the right sweetness with lemon curd and the soft fluffy meringue that is as high as a mountain. Definitely save room for dessert for a bite of this. If you want to take one home, you can ask to purchase a full pie on your way out for about $19.99. Been wanting to try this place for a while so we were in the area and stopped in. Cute place, very clean and our waitress was nice. I'm not sure if they have a senior special but there were quite a few tables of seniors enjoying their lunch. If you are looking for vegan options, skip this restaurant. I broke my veganism for a delicious cup of new england clam chowder and a great lobster salad on a roll. Don't get the potato salad though, it was actually inedible. It was mostly onions in an odd tasting dressing that was white but did not taste like mayo. Maybe it was spoiled. We let the waitress know and she kindly took it off the bill. Just stick with the coleslaw which was actually very tasty. What you definitely want to have is the lemon meringue pie! They give you a giant piece but the 4 of us polished it off in no time flat. It tasted like a lemon cloud and i've been thinking of it ever since. If i'm out that way again, i will definitely eat there and you should too. Don't skip the pie! read more

Wait staff are always friendly. Prompt service. A fun experience, like being in a spot that hasn't changed in many decades. The total for both of us was a very reasonable $57. plus tip. Only one thing I did not like. A woman walked into the dining talking on her speakerphone. Well my mom and I had a girls day and spent the night at Hyatt so we decided to have lunch here!
